Most powers tended to be, one way or another, good. They were useful. Which made sense. People who had powers that uniquivocally sucked tended not to reproduce, and something something evolution, right? Jude wasn't entirely sure, but the whole thing sounded about right in his head, even if he wasn't sure how valid it was here. That was how it had worked back at home, with every generation getting that much more powerful than the one before it.

Jude let himself relaxed a bit as Leeroy went out of his way to calm his fears. Alright. He could deal with all this, couldn't he? It wasn't that bad - just a surprise. And he was willing to talk. He seemed interested. He wasn't shutting down or telling Jude to move on or anything.

But his question caught Jude off guard, and his eyes widened slightly as his brain turned over, trying to process for a moment before it finally caught.

"Oh! Oh, these?" He gestured up to the metal on his face, the bits running down his neck. "No. Not him. That was an explosion, but it wasn't one of his." He supposed Leeroy was probably familiar with what explosion scars looked like, and... well, that was the kind of patterning Jude had. It was more obvious with his shirt off, but even just his neck let most people take a pretty good guess.

"I almost never saw him explode," Jude admitted. "His radius was too high. Any time he did, the property damage would be massive even if we'd evacuated ahead of time. It was a weapon of last resort, so most of the time he just fought normally." Or not at all, in a lot of cases.

A subtle sigh of relief. Good.

His worst fear about this stranger was that his power had hurt others unintentionally, something that stemmed from his own paranoia. It was still unfortunate to see someone so young look so scuffed up, but at least it wasn’t at the hands of someone he trusted.

"Oh, well. That’s good. And sorry for the invasive question. And the scars. I’m glad you’re okay now, though." He said, turning to look back down as he mopped. Slowly, he began to accept that this conversation wasn’t just an after class clarification. It was going down a much deeper route, one that Leeroy rarely frequented himself.

He cleaned absentmindedly as he listened. How his power was destructive, how his power was a last ditch effort. This sounded all too familiar.

He couldn’t help but to chuckle dryly.

"Ya know, I used to go by that too. I’d only use my power once in a blue moon, because it was so destructive." He moved to ring out the mop. "Now look at me. I’m piecin’ back my body twice on a Tuesday." He laughed again, this time a bit less out of genuine humor. "And ya know what’s the funny part?"

Well, maybe not really all that funny.

"I’ve never seen it. I may have come close far too many times than I’d like to admit," He swallowed hard. "But I know this ain’t even a sliver of what I could potentially do."

Leeroy was wrong on both accounts. He had harmed people unintentionally, and Jude's injuries were from someone he trusted.

But that was neither here nor there.

"It's fine," Jude said. "I ask a lot of invasive questions myself, so I can't be bothered if other people do the same to me. I'm... pretty close to an open book, honestly. I had a lot of bad experiences with keeping secrets, and I prefer being open about things. It's less trouble."

He listened to what Leeroy had to say about the upper limits of his power, and he nodded briefly.

"His was a bit different. It seemed like... well, every time he went off, it got a bit stronger. It kept building on itself. So it started to become a big thing of... of not letting him go off at all. But it was any time he went unconscious, so that meant he had to stay conscious, and that was a whole mess. Before they figured out how it worked they were trying to keep setting him off under the idea that the power would build up if he didn't, but that was the exact opposite of how it actually worked."

It was a mess, to say the least. A completely counter-intuitive power, one that worked the exact opposite of the way you'd think it would.

"He could do... his power was just... It was really powerful, in the end."

It seems he may have cast judgement too soon.

One thing he learned both from teaching and being a student here years ago was that no matter how bad things seemed for you, it was far worse for other people. That didn’t diminish the struggle it took for him to get here, however it just meant he needed to constantly shift his attitude with every new revelation.

When it came to coaching individual students, he had seen it all. People too scared to used their powers. People who were forced to keep using them in hopes that pent up potential wouldn't magnify the effects of them. But one thing was always common in all those stories- fear. And that, to Leeroy, was one of the most toxic things he had to deal with.

"It sounds like it was hard to control then." He said, his train of thought once more shifting from himself to this mysterious person. He remembered being pushed to set himself off in his old power class days. But it was always done in a manner that would suppress it. The school ultimately wanted him to cope with his powers, in a way that would bolster his confidence but not so much that he got the wrong idea. There were rules and laws here. By the sound of it, things may have been different where Jude came from.

"I bet it was." He replied bluntly, going back to mopping the same small area. He really wasn’t focused on it, but it kept his hands busy and his mind somewhat grounded. "If it increased with power with each use, I can’t imagine how it was when you last saw him."

He seemed to instantly regret that question. By the sound of it, this person was no more than a memory. But, Jude seemed to be fine with invasive questions. And maybe talking it out would help them cope.

"...What ended up happenin’ to him..?"

He'd expected, at some point in the conversation, that he would ask. How could he not? Jude had mentioned the existence of a person whose powers were a lot like his own. Of course he'd want to know what happened to him, and Jude shook his head.

"I'm not sure if you heard about the whole... Halcyon City evacuation thing. A bunch of us came over from an alternate dimension. That worlds was being consumed by... giant monsters known as the Gultha. The biggest of them was literally taking bites out of the planet. It wasn't much more than a giant maw in the sky, but it was so powerful that... well, no one was getting away."

Jude paused, shifting a bit. It wasn't uncomfortable--he'd talked about it enough--but it also wasn't something that he ever got used to really explaining.

How did you explain something like that?

"They evacuated some of us. And then they did a last stand. They threw everything they had at it. In the end, DeadManSwitch chose to sacrifice themselves. No one knew what would happen if they died, but if they didn't do anything, everyone was going to die."

Jude grimaced. He hadn't seen it, but it was still there, writ large on his memory, something huge and significant.

"He tore a hole in reality. He didn't kill the Gultha and stop it from destroying the earth, huge parts of it simply ceased to exist. Him killing it let everyone else evacuate to Manta Carlos. He bought us time."

Leeroy wasn’t one to pry. That was the guidance counselor’s job, after all. But he did care about his students, and wanted to at least be there for them if they came to him for something personal. And he had to hand it to him, it did take a lot of guts to say your story over and over again, especially if it was an unhappy one.

He nodded quietly when asked if he was familiar with the alternate universe. He was supposed to keep on these things, especially if large amounts of students or citizens were coming in from a failing one. It was always devastating, and no matter how many people came in facing similar problems, he could never desensitize himself to it.

He frowned a bit, as he did. He finally felt as if he was getting somewhat of a good idea of this person, even down to the obviously fitting title. It wasn’t so much a story of tragedy, in terms of facing a downfall for some horrible mishap related to his power. He died, it seemed, in honor.

It was tragic, but a bit of relief.

When Jude finished his story, Leeroy spoke in a low voice. "That’s awful tragic. I’m so sorry you had to go through that." He said. It wasn’t much, but losing all that you’ve ever known is never easy or pleasant. "What he did was brave. It really does take someone admirable to fight for a cause for the sake of everyone else. He must have been pretty dear to you. I’m sorry you lost him."

Leeroy moved to the bleachers to sit, no longer interested in cleaning at the moment. This afternoon took a darker turn than he expected, but in a way, he was really glad. It was nice to talk to somebody who seemed genuinely interested in reaching out. And he was content to piecing together his own story… Almost.

"Thank you for tellin’ me. I know it can be… Hard moving here after all that. But I’m glad you made it here safely." He smiled a bit, reassuringly.

"It’s unfortunate that it’s so common here that people arrive on unfortunate circumstances. I can’t say that I’m a stranger to that, either."

Jude didn't have many possessions. Some clothes. His notebooks for school. Some of the only actual posessions he had were small glass statues produced by Erione. They were lifelike, made exactly in the image of the person, and one of them--sitting atop a mostly empty bookshelf--was DeadManSwitch.

It was the closest thing to a memorial he was ever likely to have.

Jude didn't quite sit, but he did stand not far from where he was, nodding.

"I was lucky," Jude admitted. "When I first came over, I came with my friends. That's already more than most people get. Most people come alone, with nothing. I came with people I was close to, and then I got doubly lucky. I had more people join me from my world. When I first arrived I thought arriving from another dimension would be unique, but really it's... almost painfully common. Ours was just a larger scale than most."

He paused for a moment, looking Leeroy over. He looked normal, but that didn't mean much of anything, did it?

"You aren't from an alternate dimension, are you...?" The way he'd said it had implied... something. Either that or really trying circumstances.

Even though Jude was counting his blessings, it still gave Leery a deep feeling of sorrow. The past couldn’t be changed, and Jude could never go back. But it was good he still had people to hold onto. Even in the darkest of times, having people who care about you made things hurt a little less.

"Well, I’m glad you have people to keep you company. And I can imagine it feeling familiar. At least, on this island."
Which brought him to Jude’s next question.

"Oh no, I’m from this realm. Just not from this island.” Which, to be fair, most weren’t. He looked ahead, his gaze on nothing in particular as he parsed his memories, careful to avoid the really unhappy ones. "Ya know, I was pretty young when I came here. I had to have been just starting high school, I think. Came here with nothing but the clothes on my back." He chuckled quietly. He was a much different kid back then, smaller, definitely nowhere near burly. Thank goodness none of the students dug up the yearbook archives.

But his mind traced back to the more serious topic at hand. Thinking about it now… It almost seemed like his past life never happened. That it was all just a really bad dream. "It seems so long ago, but the memories are still there. Not to be a downer, but you can never fully move on from the pain of the past. No matter how far you feel like you’ve come, it’ll always creep over you. In times where you least expect it. In times where things otherwise are goin’ pretty great. Makes you feel stagnant, ya know?"

He didn’t realize he was rambling, or straying completely off topic. This whole conversation and the parallels tricked his mind into a stream of consciousness thought process. He wasn’t even really thinking what he was saying anymore, and as he sat with his elbows on his knees, his clasped hands began to tighten.

"It’s all unfinished business I guess. Somethin’ that can never be fixed, because you can never go back."

Just like the other Angelo, then. He'd come to the island as a teenager and grown up there. They had similar enough histories that Jude had a general idea of what he was dealing with, and he nodded along as he listened.

"Sometimes that's better," Jude said, even if he couldn't really agree. He had a perfect memory. He knew what was going on his own head. The details stayed as sharp as ever, even if he had to prune through to keep the emotions from overwhelming him. "It means you never forget the good parts either. Important people who are gone still keep living because you remember them. And you learn from the lessons. If you forget, you just repeat yourself."

Great, he sounded like a fortune cookie.

"I guess I just... learned to keep moving forward. If I don't, I'll just shut down." He suspected everyone would. You just had to keep moving. You had to focus on the good things. On his dad being there. On his friends. Not on the billions who had died.

He'd been lucky.

He spoke the truth. It was a lesson he should have learned as a young child, but having it spoken to him in a particularly vulnerable moment was reassuring. The losses they faced were radically different- and Leeroy could never fully understand the feeling of losing an entire planet’s worth of people. Still, loss was loss. And having some sort of support in coping with the still-fresh emotions helped.

"You’re right. You never wanna dwell on things, but if ya keep memories locked away because they hurt ya can’t learn from them You can’t take back what happened. All ya can do is keep movin’ on."

And on shutting down, he nodded. "It’s far too easy to succumb to that sort of thing. And in a lot of cases, dangerous. Emotionally and for me, physically." His index and middle finger carefully slid over his wrist to check his pulse. It was a bit jittery, but not racing. And he didn’t feel hot, either.

He looked up at him, cracking a bit of a sideways smile. "I’m sure he’d be proud of you, if he could see you now. Despite everything, you’re still here."
