"Time isn't a problem for me. And besides, I got the slick moves if I feel like it." He gave a toothy grin and laughed. Kitsune lived for a while, so it doesn't matter how long it took to learn how to twirl the baton. Fire breathing would be the easiest part of it too. Heck, he could set himself on fire and continue on with the show.

Ater shook his head with a shrug. "Well who knows? A couple of friends said that there was some kind of forbidden temple where dark rituals used to take place, and that was what cursed our bloodline. But I've seen a lot of other kitsune clans, and we don't seem to be that different from them. Just a difference in how we do things and how involved we are with the temples we tend to. Like this one clan who keeps out of sight, meanwhile we are open to being seen. And that they usually wear different colors of robes. Us? We use black with a bit of red... And no, that's not because we're edgy or evil or anything. We're just... I guess weird? We're a bit shadowy with the dark color choice, but that's tradition, can't really help it."

Marcus read too much science fiction to mistake what Ater said. He was definitely either immortal or long-lived. "I bet if it came down to it, you would probably just breakdance. Brings new meaning to the phrase 'on fire', doesn't it?"

Nodding his head, and acknowledging what was said, Marcus thought about it. Ater's clan was open to being seen, right? Why wasn't there more records of Kitsune?

Ater burst out laughing at the wordplay. "I hadn't thought about that, but it'd definitely be big in one of those talent shows!" If only his influence could be transmitted through the airwaves. By the time those Kyrrava would notice, it'd be too late. He'd have a disposable army, and if he'd fail, well, he'd just possess another creature and bide his time.

"Tell me something about your family. Were they more than just humans?"

"Nope, just regular people," Marcus said. "What's the term given to them? Normals, I think?" Though he heard the term several times, he hadn't actually used it before.

If only his parents weren't so 'normal', then maybe he'd still be in England. "That does raise the question of how I got my ability, though. If was just a random mutation, or something else entirely."

"Normals, normies, people consider that a slur, but nearly everything is a slur these days," he said, shrugging. He didn't care a lot for those kinds of labels, and he personally thought they were given needless power. As if that word controlled a demon.

He could only sigh at the notion.

"Maybe your family had a history for magic. Maybe no one recent, but in the medieval ages or something. Or you got bit by a radioactive... book? Ever had a run-in with a mimic?"

"Ah, yes. Everything is insulting nowadays." He didn't go on social media often, but when he did, Marcus usually found an unreasonable amount of cussing towards something. It was if the world was set on broken glass.

"Seems like the sort of thing someone would actually write down, though." Maybe he did have magic ancestry since it would explain why it only works with books. It couldn't be medieval ages though, as it had to be the renaissance. "It could be possible that I have magic ancestry, as I definitely wasn't bitten by a book, and Mimics don't show up as often as they should where I'm from."

"Not like looking into it is a bad idea," he shrugged. There would be a lot of reasons why Marcus has his abilities. Ater could name a few off the top of his head, including possession, fairy godmothers, accidental chemical ingestion, just to name a few more now that mimics and being bitten by radioactive books were crossed off the list.

"Everything outside must get boring after a while. But I guess that's why humans are pushing so much towards entertainment, stirring up trouble and just fawning over the supernatural. Weird how they'd condemn us if we were a few centuries in the past."

"It would be difficult though," Marcus added. "Since the world outside doesn't know about magic, it would be rare to find documentation of it, other than conspiracy theories of course."

He sighed and leaned against the wall. "They'd condemn us now too. Only, now, they would do it the smart way. Find out how we work, what makes us tick and all that. If it's useful, find a way to replicate it, otherwise destroy it." It felt odd saying 'we', especially considering he didn't even know Manta Carlos existed not too long ago.

"Might not be as hard as you think. It's true that most of the outside world don't know about magic, but that doesn't mean magic isn't found in their communities," he said as he wagged a finger at Marcus' general direction.

"I'm sure there's a hidden vault somewhere out there with a stone tablet that tells you who your ancestors were. Or maybe some savvy wizards put up a lineage chart for people with magical abilities. Actually... You'd think there would be something like that at the hands of the school's scouts."

Hooo, wasn't that an idea? Maybe he could look up the Kitsune's lineage to see if there really was a time where the bloodline was cursed.

"Well maybe. But judging by the people you meet online, you're more prone to dying from fangirls and fanboys first before the governments can get ya."

"You have a point there, but it still seems like it would be dangerous to have as common knowledge." Under the scrutiny of the wagging finger, Marcus shrugged his hands in his pockets.

"Even if they did, I doubt they'd let people look at it anytime they wanted." It did seem like a good idea though. Maybe he should find out if such a thing actually existed first.

"Fans? I take things out of books, you are a flaming foxboy." (OOC: that sounded awesome in a British accent)
