"Well, there are some... rules of course," he started, "Like for example, we couldn't just go around and start getting all touchy with the shrines. First we need to see if whoever owns the shrine would be alright with that since some people have preferences. Like having female kitsune taking care of the shrine." At this he sighed. "Basically things have to have agreements like everything else. Though if shrines were abandoned, we could take care of it if we wanted."

Ater thought for a moment, recalling the limits of his ability compared to the others in his clan. "Quite hot. I can make them hot enough to make some metals melt, but the older ones can turn a patch of dirt into lava about six feet deep. Though the hotter it is, the more energy you'd have to pump into the fire."

At least your power limits make sense," He laughed. Now that they were quite far from the scene, he stopped to sit on the nearest Bench. "I can only use Hardcover books."

"So," Marcus finally asked. "Why did you step in to help?" Ater didn't seem like the type of guy to him that would purposely get in trouble just to help someone else.

"That's a strange limit. Guess you'd be out of luck if someone ripped off the covers then?" He knew magic could be fickle, but this kind of thing was just weird. Still useful however. Maybe he could use this boy for something in the future.

Ater shrugged when asked why he jumped in to help. "Was I just going to let them do what they want with you? Those people were just pathetic. They just bully others because they can. And I have to be honest, you were pretty defenseless. So, like the good-hearted person I am, I threw my hat in to even out the bout."

He grinned awkwardly. It was weird to talk about his power in such a casual fashion. Back in England, he'd have probably been studied for the next few decades just after releasing that pair of shoes. "Yeah, I guess I would be."

Hearing about Ater's selflessness, Marcus wasn't sure how to respond. Should he insult them too? Exaggerate Ater's actions? In the end, he just went with the most natural course."Uh, cool. Did you know that Male foxes are called Dogs?"

"'Cool'? You got to show more appreciation than that," he said with a sigh, but his tone was not at all serious. "At least you're not swooning like that one weirdo... And no, I didn't know that."

Dogs? DOGS?! Who decided to call it that? Some colonist that saw a fox and said 'That's a weird dog'? Female foxes were call vixens, why didn't male foxes get a cool name? "I heard someone call male foxes 'Tods', and child foxes... kits? ... I wonder if that has something to do with Kitsunes..."

That one weirdo? So he does get into fights often for the sake of others. "What'd he do? That weirdo, I mean."

Ater seemed offended at being called a dog. "I'm sure it was just an English language mess up." Now that he thought about it, it would make actually very little sense for foxes to be called dogs.

"What'd he do?" Ater chuckled to himself. "Well, he started going theatrical with his appreciation and... you know how some people go overboard? He sort of started stalking me... quite obviously too..." He sighed deeply. "Only instance I went to a councilor for help.

"Anyway, now that I'm looking at you, you don't look like you belong in high school. You seem to look like someone at the college level." When he was saying this, his irises seemed to glow a little for just a few moments. Maybe a trick of the light?

Marcus chuckled as well. He was quite interesting, this Ater. "must have been an interesting week for you. How did it end?"

"Yeah, I'm actually a freshman." How could he tell? Marcus didn't exactly look old. They were about the same height too. "I'm currently studying mathematics."

Ater scratched the back of his head and sighed. "Well, I got him to quit with the exaggerated thanks, and we're still on good terms. Apparently he thought I would have done something to him if I didn't get any praise..."

Another deep sigh escaped his lungs, his face twisting a bit towards exhaustion just from thinking about it. "I'm not sure what he was reading, but the councilor told me that he was influenced by a book about Kitsunes, and because of my record, he thought I was thinking that he owed me something." Which wasn't too far from the truth. If he proved useful in the future, he could be used for his plans.

"I guessed right. I have a classmate that keeps track of people coming into the high school levels. I don't know why she does it, but since I didn't hear about anyone joining or have joined with your looks, I took a shot in the dark."

"Well, you do seem pretty intimidating." He scoffed. "Just from your appearance, you wouldn't seem that much different from an anime antagonist." Marcus intended it as a joke, Ater seemed to have some morals, even if they were questionable.

This island has books on the species living here? Maybe he should read them, let him know about any potential surprises he might find. Who knows, maybe it'd explain how someone like him has an ability like his. "Is it normal for a kitsune to keep debts?" Did he owe Ater for showing up? If he did, then how would he collect a debt?

Clever, using a pre-established monitoring system to track certain groups. "Maybe, she's just expecting someone? Either way, lucky guess."
