For Want of a Roommate

The hallway was lined with fancy looking wooden doors, with a black letter followed by a number on each one. Since it was the evening, laughter or various friendly conversations were audible from behind most of the doors, while others were left open as students entered or left. Everyone seemed at ease, which was why Paige felt out of place the minute she entered the hallway, brown suitcase holding all of her possessions in one hand, and a key labeled E70 in the other. For a while she simply stood in place, too anxious to take a step further and wanting nothing more than to pull her red beanie over her eyes and pretend that she was back in St. Louis with her father. The past couple of days had been a whirlwind, from the private flight with other kids, the unanswered questions, and the cryptic assurances that yes, she was gifted with... something.

Yeah, I got the gift of killin' people and forgetting about it... She thought bitterly. No matter how hard she tried, Paige couldn't recall a single detail about the... incident. This, and the invitation to Starlight Academy that followed soon after gave her images of a school that trained murderers or something, but that didn't appear to be the case, because assassin schools couldn't be this cheerful. She had been told to head to the administration wing, but when she was given a key to her own room, Paige didn't think twice about putting that off for a minute or two. That eventually brought her to a hallway she was too nervous to walk down while thoughts of what everyone would think of her, the girl in the aqua Anamanaguchi t-shirt and wrinkly and spaghetti-sauce stained blue jeans that barely covered her flip-flopped feet. God forbid anyone heard her talk, lest they find out that they're in the presence of a hick from 'Missourah'.

Her arm began to ache from the weight of the suitcase, and that seemed like a subtle reminder that she couldn't just stand in the hallway forever. With a sigh, Paige trudged forward, head down, eyes up to read the labels on each door. Mercifully, she found her room near the end of the hallway, and her sullen anxiety was briefly overcome by giddy excitement. Fitting the key in the handle and unlocking the door, Paige gradually opened it and stepped inside the room while forgetting to close her door in the process. The main area, which she guessed was the living room, looked like the insides of the fancier houses she would see in magazines. For the first time in a long while, Paige smiled and let out a few nervous laughs. There was no way she'd be staying here.

Dropping her suitcase by the door, Paige walked over to the sofa and flopped down. It was the most comfortable couch she'd even sat in, and she couldn't help but lie down on it, kick her flip-flops off, and perch her feet on the sofa's arm. "This... this cain't be happenin'. I gotta be dreaming." Muttered Paige, eyes closed with a huge grin on her face. She knew she'd have to get to the administration center before night, but for the time being that could wait. After everything she'd been through, she just wanted to rest for just a little while...

There was something oddly suspicious or just plain strange about the Academy. The feeling was not a sinister one by any means, though there were times when it could be a little disconcerting. No. The feeling mostly stemmed from the rather laid back and casual attitude the Academy as a whole put off, both in terms of the student body and how it was officially run. Considering the composition of the student body, most people would assume that there would be layers upon layers of security measures or frequent use of magical spells and wards to keep the students and faculty from accidentally or purposely misusing their powers. But nope. The students were generally expected to just be on their best behavior and supernatural limitations would not come until it was really needed. In a way, it was liberating and respectful.

On the other hand, without the presence of magical wards or pocket dimensions in the dorms, it meant that anyone with burglar-like skills or sufficient resources could just get into a locked dorm. Such was the case with Orion, whom peered over the back of the sofa like a curious cat or gnome at the resting girl.

He was quiet and stealthy, a far cry from his usual rambunctious self. Even as he stood up from behind the couch to get a better look at her, he was as silent as a mouse but no less curious. The look on his face said it all. He meant no harm, intentionally anyway. Orion was but a curious young man with the resrouces and know how to both feed that curiosty and annoy people with his lack of social graces. Social graces like don't pick locks on locked dorms just so he could poke around at everything.

For a while, Paige felt like she was ready to doze off to sleep in her insanely comfortable couch. She didn't, of course, because a few minutes of sleep wasn't worth being late to her destination. A little eye resting wouldn't hurt though, and she preoccupied her mind by thinking about whether or not she'd have a roommate. It was highly unlikely that she wouldn't, but if for some odd reason that turned out to be the case, she would definitely ask for one. She didn't want to come off as special or someone who was above the rules somehow, and truth be told, she was looking forward to living with a stranger if they turned out to be nice. Just don't make her think you're weird. She warned herself, remembering most her past experiences with new people starting off on the wrong foot due to her saying something stupid without realizing it.

And now Paige thought about making that same mistake here, and that made her feel uncomfortable, which quickly made her anxious; it was a domino effect of self-doubt anxiety that was very familiar. Paige shifted from side to side and struggled to find a position that wouldn't make her back itch, but after several minutes she knew that the effort was futile. Sighing in defeat, Paige's eyes opened and flittered around the room for a few seconds while she sat up. She yawned and stretched her arms, then she popped a few of her knuckles before she leaned back against the couch. Paige wasn't in any kind of rush yet; the deadline was still pretty far away, so it wouldn't hurt to relax a while longer.

"Hmm... Should probably unpack..." Paige muttered, who stood up and walked to the doorway to retrieve her suitcase. She had packed lightly, which meant a few pairs of jeans, some tights and a couple skirts, a jacket or two, and her favorite shirts. Other than that, a toothbrush, and some deodorant, she had nothing. Some wandering led her to a small room with a bed that looked unoccupied, a wooden dresser was in the corner, and elsewhere was a desk and a nightstand beside the bed. It didn't take long for her to clean the suitcase out and divide her meager belongings into three of the dresser's drawers. After a brief inspection of the room, Paige made a vow to herself to get a summer job and work on filling up her dresser.

With that done, she returned to the living room and it's lovely couch. Without any real reason, she stared out of her open doorway and noticed the occasional passing student. Each time she hoped to see one of them stop in front of her doorway, walk in, and introduce themselves as her roommate. While she entertained these thoughts, she felt a little... uncomfortable, and she couldn't put a finger on the reason why...

Just before Paige opened her eyes and sat up from the couch, there was the tiniest whiff of air across her nose. It was a movement so small she probably just lumped it together with the movement of wind as she sat up. But of course that was not the case. Orion had just been about to tap the tip of her nose with his finger before she roused herself, and when she did he retreated back behind the safety of the couch and away from her view. The unintentional game of hide and seek carried too much an allure to end so quickly, so he let himself drag it out a little bit longer.

By now a master in the art of rolling around the ground, Orion kept himself from discovery by moving along the ground around the sofa, expertly keeping the piece of furniture between him and Paige. It was as if a Marine had taken Ninja lessons.

When he watched her disappear into an adjoining room, he could not help his curiosity and peeked in from around the door frame. To anyone else, it would have been a mundane show. She was unpacking her clothes, nothing special. Hell, even the prospect of seeing Paige pack away her unmentionables never even crossed his mind. He was just a curious little bugger.

But it was right back behind the couch when she turned to leave after finishing her unpacking. He sensed that anything of any real consequence had come and gone, and the time had come to introduce himself. So after straightening out his outfit--the usual pants/vest combo with no undershirt--Orion stood up and walked right up behind Paige and tapped her on the shoulder.

"Hello! You waitin' for someone?"

While Paige was trying to put her finger on the odd, uneasy feelings she had, someone decided to put their finger on her shoulder. It was a light tap, but the suddenness nearly made her jump out of her skin. She felt her body stiffen and her skin went cold, signs of an encroaching panic attack. She spun on her heel to face the intruder, who was a guy about her age with unnaturally colored hair...and a pretty impressive chest. Still in shock, Paige could only breathe in sharply when he spoke to her with a cheery tone.

"Well, I-I-I... I guess so?" She stammered, then the whole "intruder in my dorm" revelation dawned upon her. Her brow furrowed and a frown swiftly replaced her stunned expression, "What're you doin' in here? You ain't my roommate," Questioned Paige in an uncharacteristically assertive manner.

Paige's eyes began to dart around the room and linger on everything that looked like an effective weapon. It was practically instinctual for anyone who grew up in East St. Louis, even someone as passive as Paige. Nonetheless, if she was in for a fight with this guy, she wouldn't hesitate to give him all the fight she had.

Ollie had only just stepped out and away from her dorm room- it was laundry day after all and her unmentionables weren't going to wash themselves. As well as laundry day, it was the start of the new quarter and that meant it was the day for new arrivals and she was excited. Ollie had only been attending the school for one quarter, but during those few months she had been without a roommate; no matter how many times she asked the woman at the front desk downstairs, the answer was always the same:
</br>

"Wait until next quarter."
</br>

Well, next quarter had come and today was the day that Ollie would be receiving her roommate. To her, that meant a study partner- a confidant- a friend- and above all else, a guinea pig to practice her dream walking with. Stepping through the hallway, as crowded as it was with the new arrivals, she pondered on what type of person her new companion was going to be.
</br>

Would they be nice?
</br>
Would they allow her to practice dream walking on them while they sleep?
</br>
Would they-
</br>

Stopping outside her room, she stared in through the now open door at the distracting scene within her suite's common room.
</br>

"What're you doin' in here? You ain't my roommate-"
</br>

For a moment, Ollie's mind went blank as her eyes darted back and forth between the bare chested male and the short, tired looking female. As the wheels turned in her mind, instinct took over and she dropped her satchel- causing all of her freshly folded clothes to dump out onto the ground outside the door. Practically diving into the room, she raised her arm into the air, pointed her index finger swiftly at the vest-wearing male, or somewhere in the air around him, and uttered the first thing that came to mind strongly and gutterally:
</br>

"In brightest day, in blackest night- ah, nngh, I mean- bind thy enemies within my sight!"
</br>

As quickly as the proper hex lifted off of her tongue, she rushed forward and, without really looking to see if the spell had even made contact with it's supposed target, grabbed the young girl's arm and pulled her away from the vicinity of the intruder.
</br>

"Oh- oh, are you alright, dear?" Ollie fussed over the girl's arms and face, patting her down as if she were made of sand and would, at any moment, fall apart. Her hands finally settled on the girl's face, as she brushed a stray strand out from in front of her eyes, "You aren't injured, are you?"
</br>

With worry in her eyes, she gave the girl one more once over to make sure she really was okay- too busy thinking about how she could have been alone for another quarter if something really had happened to her possible roommate, the idea never even crossed her mind that she had somehow misunderstood what had been transpiring in the common room before she arrived.
</br>

At least the girl was safe.
</br>

((Feel free to dodge, Crit- her hex only works if she words it correctly.))

To most people, Paige's rigid and anxious reaction would have been a clear indicator to give the girl some room or to reassure her that no harm was meant. Also, most people would not have sneaked into someone else's room, unannounced, just to poke around and surprise them.

<div align=right>"Well, I-I-I... I guess so?"</div>

"Oh, cool! Who are you waiting for? Boyfriend? Sibling? The mail?"

<div align=right>"What're you doin' in here? You ain't my roommate,"</div>

"Ah. A roommate! That was going to be my next guess. Can I wait with you?"

It never seemed to enter Orion's mind once that Paige might be just a little put off with finding a stranger in her room that had been present without her consent or notice. Orion just kept up his smile and acted like it was the most normal situation in the world. As if he had been the one to approach from the door to greet his new dorm neighbor. But he was not even living in the dorms. He had a place on the beach, and he was just in the dorms to be curious and annoying.

But their "meeting" was swiftly interrupted by the sudden appearance of another girl. Paige might have been surprised, but the only reaction Ollie got out of Orion was a raised eyebrow and a curious stare. As her finger rose to point, he went cross-eyed and looked directly at the tip, then followed it up her arm and to her eyes.

<div align=right>"In brightest day, in blackest night- ah, nngh, I mean- bind thy enemies within my sight!"</div>

".... Oh! I've heard that before! Ohoh! My turn! Um.... Thundercats! HOOO--!"

Orion was only able to get to the second O of HOOOO when he suddenly felt his body seize and tighten. Which was unfortunate, because he had struck an imitation pose with his arm and finger raised high above his ahead. So he was stuck with his legs forcibly clamped together, his arm clinging to his side, and his raised arm unable to be lowered. With his balance cut off, he fell to the ground with an OOF.

"Wha? What's going on?! This is not consistent with the canon of either of these reference series!"

He was able to rock back and forth on his back in protest though.

The way the intruder either deliberately or unknowingly ignored Paige's discomfort with his trespassing was helping her grow more and more angry with every passing second. She narrowed her eyes at him and frowned as her mind raced to piece together what Paige hoped would be a venomous rebuttal to his offer. She was on the cusp of responding before a very dramatic interruption occurred and robbed her of the opportunity. It was another girl who seemed shocked to see both Paige and the intruder, so much that she shouted some kind of incantation — Paige was too surprised to follow most of it.

The next thing she knew, that obnoxious intruder froze like a statue and fell over. The pose he was in followed by his panic should have sent Paige into a fit of giggles, under normal circumstances. Seeing the guy go so rigid in the blink of an eye and stay that way sure as hell wasn't normal to a girl who scoffed at the idea of magic, and now all she could think about was whether or not the other intruder would spout some more hocus pocus and turn her into a rabbit or something. She was out of the frying pan and into the freezer, as the saying went.

Paige forced herself to look away from the unfortunate victim and face the magician girl in time to see her standing less than three or so inches away from her, which was a serious breach of her personal bubble. "Hey--!" She couldn't finish her sentence before the girl was feeling up her arms and, most disturbingly, her face; patting them down as if she were concealing some kind of weapon. However The way she went about it, meticulous and gentle, quickly made Paige change her mind, the girl was checking her for injuries. That realization made her cheeks flare, especially when the girl cupped her hands around her face and voiced her concern like a TV mother.

"A-Ahm fine!" Paige squeaked, being taken aback by the suddenness of it all.

It came as a surprise to Paige that she didn't feel as uncomfortable as she should have, given the way the girl was disregarding her personal space, patting her down, and acting like some kind of parent despite looking about the same age as her. An ugly, dark thought formed in the back of her mind, hinting at why her guard was down now, of all times.

With a sudden jolt of action, Paige grabbed the girl's hands and pried them loose, freeing herself. She took a couple of steps back, and the previously warm sensation on her cheeks started to feel more like she'd been touched by acid. "He wasn't gonna do nothin', so can you... undo whatever the hell you did?" She asked, noticeably averting her eyes.
