“Right, yeah, better um, get started.”

With one last little nod, she moved off to get in position along with the rest of the witches. There was no reason to delay, as far as Wednesday could see there wasn’t anything else they could do to be more prepared than they already were. She moved to take her position around the circle, while Frodo gave one meow in return to Shiro before moving back to stay with the rest of Wednesday’s things, out of the way.

She noticed the way he seemed to shrink once the scars were exposed. Despite herself she couldn’t help but stare a brief moment, wondering what could have caused it. Though, after the moment passed she averted her gaze. Whatever the story was, it wasn’t her business, and she spent enough time being self-conscious about her appearance to not want anyone else to feel similar.

She instead focused on her part, watching as the runes and sigils lit up underneath their feet. She began a low chant herself, focusing her will on the magic being performed.

Flashing a excited smile she'd move to her spot, looking over the gathered group of witches. Very briefly there was a flash of doubt in the back of her mind, she'd seen dark magic like this, from her adopted mother, but she quickly pushed the doubt aside.

The cat shifter had a job to do and so she'd focus on it, making sure everything was ready she'd focus on the magic. Her voice joining the others in the chant as they began. Her heartbeat speeding up considerably, it was beginning, and she couldn't be more excited.

Jeremiah felt the magic flood through him, threatening to overwhelm his body until it found a conduit through the other witches present. His breath hitched hard as he lifted his arms above his head, wincing at the pain of his old scars acting up. His fist unclenched with the lock of hair he had acquired from Broen's father, casting it into the flames. Everything was going perfectly.

Until it wasn't.

The flames began to blacken yet somehow glow brighter as they closed in on Jeremiah. The magic, which had until now diffused itself through all present, suddenly flooded back into him with the force of a crashing wave. His tattoos began to glow with the same angry violet that the flames had moments before, with cracks forming and spreading across his skin.

Jeremiah was panicked. He didn't know what had gone wrong, but it had and it was going to be bad. Very very bad. "Move away!" he shouted at the others, repeating his command as he curled himself into a ball at the center of the circle.

Jeremiah squeezed his eyes shut, trying to block out the sound of popping as he began to fall apart at the seams. Too much magic for a human body to handle. The force of him coming apart put out the flames of the ritual circle with a wind far too cold for the time of year, even at night.

What was left was a pair of skulls, one human and one beast, fused together with a constant flow of violet magic set behind the eye sockets.

She knew immediately when things started to go wrong.

One moment she was holding in place, wincing a little from the strain of the magical energy she was helping to channel. Her physical body was weak, and all the magic training she’d done couldn’t change that, but all the witches working together made it more than manageable.

And then the pressure vanished. For a short moment she was confused, but after a quick moment to assess the rest of the witches she knew where all that magic was going to go.

“Jeremiah? Jeremiah!?”

Her eyes went wide, the rapidly growing panic obvious in her voice. For a moment she could only watch helplessly as the flames grew, the magic flowing back to the centre. What on earth was happening? They’d done everything right, prepared everything perfectly. She’d made sure of that.

Wednesday quickly tried to push those thoughts down. The ritual was going wrong, she had to do something. She ignored his calls to move away, hand darting down to her pocket and fumbling for her knife as she began to step closer.

But it was already too late, she barely got a step before the magic blasted outwards, the winds strong enough to make her stumble, the ink of her own tattoos crackling from the sheer amount of escaping magic energy. And just like that, it was over.

She fell to her knees, eyes locked onto the skulls, not a single word escaping her as she stared in horror.

Shiro had seen hints at the dark things magic could do, the little things her adopted mother would do or say, but she'd never seen it first hand, not at this level at least. So when it happened she didn't know how to react, to see someone who was family to her be destroyed by the magic.

For a moment she'd just stare, no sound, nothing coming from her as the shock hit the young girl. "J-Jeremiah?" she'd finally say quietly, not noticing what the other witches were doing around her. The full realization of what they'd done hitting her.

The reactions were a mixture of paralyzed horror and the scampering, sudden burst of true panic that happened so infrequently. Those who didn't run found themselves stuck stock still, staring at the circle of scorched Earth and the faintly glowing skull that had been a person moments before.

It must've felt like hours but surely couldn't have been when the soil at the ritual's center began to swell. It shuddered, and then did so again. And once again, falling into a rhythm not unlike a heartbeat.

Vines, brown and dry with death began to creep up from this mound of soil like a shallow grave. Fur and bones of things long dead cracked through the topsoil. Weaving together with the plant matter into something like a man and yet wholly unlike it. Curled up like an unborn child, the discarded skull taking the place of a head.

The sudden movement is what finally snapped Wednesday out of her stunned silence. She gasped, hopping back up to her feet, clutching her knife in front of her as the earth began to beat. Frodo, who'd been waiting at the sidelines, approached his owner and curled up defensively at her feet, and the two of them watched as the earth pulled together to form something shaped like a person.

For a moment longer, she said nothing, the only sound she made was her breathing as she waited for something to happen. Eventually, hesitantly, she spoke.

"...Jeremiah?" She asked, the uncertainty in her voice clear.

She didn't seem to react to the figure forming on the ground at first, the shock still overriding everything else. Then she heard Wednesday speak, blinking she'd look at the figure. "J-Jeremiah?" it did vaguely have the shape of a person.

Slowly she'd make her way towards the figure, her tail switching nervously behind her. "Jeremiah? That you buddy?" she'd ask as she finally reached it, taking a knee and looking it over.

"Jeremiah?" she'd slowly reach her hand out towards it.

The lump of fur and vines moved slightly at the sound of Wednesday and Shiro calling out to it. An arm swung as it tried to right itself, a massive clawed hand catching in the dirt and lifting the body up slightly.

"Wh-"

The voice that resonated from the fused creature skull was almost Jeremiah's. But it was both too loud and seemingly far away, echoing from somewhere you couldn't quite see.

The skull turned, the intense violet glow behind the eye sockets narrowing to pin pricks of light as they focused on Shiro beside them. "What's happening."

Hearing his voice finally caused the tension to fall from her shoulders, she put the knife down. Jeremiah could talk, that meant he was alive.

That relief started to disappear once she realised what was happening. This was Jeremiah, he'd been changed into...something else. Just like that, she started to feel the panic rise again.

"I-I don't know. Something...something made the spell reverse and you took everything. This..."

Wednesday forced herself to calm for a moment. While Shiro was checking on the body speaking with Jeremiah's voice, she started looking around the circle, inspecting what traces of the ritual was left.

"That shouldn't have happened. We did everything right. Everything was happening just as it should have and then it just stopped. Why?"

Wednesday focused on trying to figure out the facts, running through different reasons the spell could have backfired like this with her incomplete grasp on necromancy. The alternative was thinking about what happened to Jeremiah, thinking of how his body had exploded in front of her.

How she had missed something, how she had somehow messed up.

She tried not to think about that just for the moment.
