Flowerchains and Countdowns [Heng]

The garden was quiet today. She had tucked herself between some flowerbeds, where she could hide in the shade and just relax. All her afternoon classes had been canceled, but instead of getting caught up on her homework, she fled to the garden. It was cool, and the sun was hidden behind the clouds, so it was the perfect day to shirk all her responsibilities.

Along the roots of the tree, crocuses were blooming; they hadn't been planted by somebody, so she assumed that they were fair game to pick. Weaving them together into chains was incredibly difficult for her, but she loved the way they looked. If only her fingers would obey...

Twenty minutes later, she only managed to tie together three flowers.

"Today just isn't my day, is it?" She mumbled, tossing the flowers over her shoulder.

Heng had been exploring the place for the past two days, ever since he had made it to Manta Carlos. He had been worried that his little... accident on the boat would have rendered him blind for at least three days, but he had been able to take off his bandages earlier in the morning.

Now that his afternoon Math class was cancelled for the day, he decided to explore the park. He had passed by it on his first day, but didn't have time to drop by. Now he loped across the green lawn, noting how empty it looked while everyone was at class.

Out of nowhere, a bunch (well, it was more like three flowers tied together) of flowers flew at him and lightly bumped his nose. It seemed to come from the flowerbeds, but flowers didn't suddenly toss their heads away. He picked up the flowers and called out to the bushes. There was most likely someone there.

"Um, excuse me? Did you drop something?"

Ann jumped, a little startled. That's what she deserved for not paying attention. She turned around sheepishly--it was one of the kids from the middle school. She'd seen him in passing once or twice, but she tried to stay away from that part of campus. It was loud.

"Sorry about that," she replied, "I was just getting frustrated with my flower chain. I'm not very good at it."

She got up, dusting off her knees. "I'm Amaranth. But you can call me Ann, if you like."

He seemed quiet enough, maybe he was just looking for a quiet place like she was...

Heng looked up to face Amaranth, but almost immediately looked away. No telling when he would accidentally frighten someone with his eyes. He pretended to look over her shoulder instead.

"I'm Heng. Ann is easier to say," he pointed out. Heng approached Amaranth and held out the flowers, putting on a smile. Maybe she was shy, and that was why she was in the garden, alone.

"And it's all right! I used to have a friend who knew how to make these. I still don't know how she did it."

"In theory," she grunted, "I know how. It's just that my hands don't know how to follow my instructions." She picked up another few flowers and tried again. With shaking hands, she wrapped the stem of the second flower over and around. "See, you're supposed to keep doing this, so the stem of the previous flower gets tucked under each subsequent flower. But my fine motor skills are awful."

Ann scooted over to make room for Heng. "Come sit down, if you'd like. I'm not gonna do anything but frustrate myself more and more with these flowers," she laughed.

"Can you show me that again? I want to learn."

Heng approached Ann and sat down beside her, setting her flower chain down on the ground. He picked a dandelion from among the crocuses and shuffled through the flowers, looking for more. He didn't ask Ann about her motor skills or anything, he felt that it would be rude.

"I can help you make some with the bigger flowers, if you want?"

"Sure, I'll show you how." Ann gathered some dandelions--the longer stems would make it a bit easier.

"First, take two flowers, and make them into a 't' shape, like this," Ann demonstrated, putting the two flower heads right next to each other, with the stems crossing at right angles.

Then, taking the vertical one, she wrapped it over and around the other stem, finally crossing the stem over itself, right under the flower.

"This is the part that always gets me. Once you have these two intertwined, you have to get another and wrap its stem around both of the ones behind it. For me, they always get too loose here and fall apart, but maybe you can get it to work?"

Ann offered the chain to Heng.

Heng took the chain which fell apart almost immediately in his hands. "...Oh. Uh, I can fix this." He twined the stems around each other, imitating Ann's chain. He thought he was doing it right, the first two seemed to be stable enough. He reached for a third one-- and the flowers fell apart.

"I'll... fix this." He twined the flowers around each other once again, and this time the chain held its integrity. He picked up a third dandelion and wrapped it around the last one. "This isn't so hard." He reached for one of Ann's fallen crocuses, and attached it to the end. He held out a four-flower chain to Ann for her to inspect.

"Is this right?"

Ann looked on happily. She was glad someone could do it, even if her hands wouldn't work well enough to do it herself.

"That's perfect," she exclaimed. She got up, swinging her arms out in front of her for balance. "I'll find you more flowers, gimme just a second."

Amaranth hurried off, looking through the flower beds for perfect specimens with long stems. Not too far away, a patch of daisies drifted in the slight breeze.

She stumbled back a few minutes later with nearly a mountain of flowers in her arms. It took her a few moments to settle down without dropping her prizes, but she managed to place the pile between the two of them gently.

"I think I overdid it..."

Far from raising his eyebrows or frowning at the pile, Heng’s eyes lit up. “Want to make a really long chain? I don’t know what it’s going to be for, but it might be fun!” He picked up a daisy and started wrapping its stem around Amaranth’s crocus. He soon added more and more daisies, punctuating them witha crocus or a dandelion once in a while.

“And she always told me it was magic,” Heng said, without a hint of bitterness in his voice. He soon held the lengthening chain out to Ann. “Do you want to try continuing it? You might get it right this time, I can help you.”
