Flowerchains and Countdowns [Heng]

"Magic, huh? It certainly feels like magic, in a way. Like fairies in a forest glade or something," she said with a smile. The thought of fairies was quite nostalgic for her. As a kid, she had collected books and figurines, and little bottles of fairy dust that her teachers gave to her for a job well done.

Ann nodded. It was a pretty long chain so far, and she was in awe. There were enough long stemmed flowers for her to continue, as long as she could pull it tight at the end. With careful concentration, she wrapped the long stem of the daisy around the stems of the other flowers, holding them together while she found another flower. When she attached the other one, she squealed in success. It wasn't as neat as the others, but it was certainly holding.

"I think I'll need help making them a little tighter, but I think I can do it if the stems are really long..."

"We still have some daisies left," Heng said, holding out a few to Ann. "They might wilt soon, so we need to--"

He didn't mean to look directly at Ann. His gaze brushed past Amaranth's eyes, but he didn't stare. Nonetheless, he felt a moment of piercing pain behind his forehead. Instinctively, he dropped his gaze and covered his eyes with his forearm. Already he could feel liquid seeping from between his eyelids.

"...Ah." It wasn't an exclamation of pain. It was more of an acknowledgement of what was happening. "You- you don't need to worry about me, I'll be okay!" Heng chattered, in a voice slightly higher than his own. He shifted back from Ann and looked from side to side, still holding his arm over his eyes.

For some reason, her heart started to race, and her hands were shaking like crazy, making her drop the chain. It wasn't always easy to figure out which feelings were what, but this must've been something like fear, since her heart was racing so fast.

But that didn't matter at all, not when there was blood running down Heng's face. Even though he was saying he was fine, Ann didn't believe him for a second. What was she supposed to do? Nothing like this had ever happened before, and her heart was still beating too quickly.

"Should I take you to the nurse? Are you hurting?" She felt her hands feebly signing away while she talked, mostly on instinct. The stage where she'd become nonverbal was still a little bit off, since she'd had a quiet day.

Heng could tell that Ann had started freaking out. It was apparent from her voice. Heng had learned to feel the shifts in peoples' voices when his sight started suffering.

And apparently, Ann wasn't taking this too well. This day had gone awry rather quickly.

"Um. It doesn't hurt, I swear. But. I think I need to get to the nurse. Real quick. Do you think you can help me get there? I. Don't think I can see. Yet." Heng staggered to his feet, his left arm still over his eyes. He concealed his arm and face from Ann by blocking them with his right arm and turning away from Ann (or at least, from where he thought she was sitting). It didn't work too well; most of the lower half of his face was visible, and a few smears of read were visible up his nose.

"Alright, let's get going then."

A trip to the nurse? Okay, that was easy enough. Ann abandoned the flower chain and stood, gently holding Heng's arm to guide him. The nurse's office was a bit of a walk from where they were, but it would give her time to process what just happened. Even now, as she ignored her racing heart, she felt bad for freaking out. This poor kid starts bleeding, and all she can do is panic? Too bad she was awful at handling emergencies--she was starting to like Heng. Another friendship down the tubes.

"This spot is pretty rocky. You sure you want to try and walk through it blind? I can carry you on my back if you want."
