Xavier jogged along a path in the park, a little bit ahead of him a golden retriever also ran along. Must have been only a few days since Xavier got back from almost dying, and then discharged from the hospital, before he set out. This had been his first time volunteering at a dog shelter that he intended to volunteer at more. Earlier in the day, he had done some community service. Not to mention he planned to look at some other places to do some volunteering. He had considered joining the Starlight Helpers Club but... he didn't want to ruin their reputation. He had already done a lot of that.

Xavier wore a unzipped hoodie over a tank top, with shorts and trainers on. Despite the weather having gotten colder, he had decided to wear the shorts simply because he wanted to feel the cold against his legs. Anyone close to him would see a bruise had formed on the right side of his jaw. It was very lucky that he was even able to jog right now, considering he had to wear a human shape charm in order to even have legs now. He also had to visit the ocean regularly now... not to mention the weird dream he had been having since this whole... not being human thing started. Always the same dream, with the pitch black and same voice that Xavier couldn't make the words out of. Always saying 'forget'. Xavier always waking in a cold sweat, his heart pounding.

Eventually, Xavier went and sat down on a bench while he called the golden retriever over. He had made sure that it was ok for him to jog while walking the dog. He pulled a tennis ball out of the hoodie's pocket then threw the ball as far as he could, the dog immediately sprinted after it. Since it was his first time doing this, they decided that the golden retriever would be the best option.

Xavier wiped sweat from his face, breathing hard. Before, he would've sat down on the bench and leaned back, thinking 'wow, jogging is so refreshing. I should do it more often again'. Considering the fact he could walk again, he should've been thinking that he was so lucky to be able to jog again. But didn't. He didn't feel anything actually. He leaned back in the bench and stared up at the sky, his eyes blank. Usually one to easily smile, his face was completely deadpan. The past week or two hadn't been pleasant for Xavier... to be honest, the past couple months hadn't been the best. Adding in his usual problems back at Halcyon, the whole end of the world deal, then the loss of his parents and all of his siblings except one, getting used and tricked once again by someone he considered a friend to do something that ruined his own reputation, causing a lot of people to get scared, ruining his relationships with everyone he knows, almost getting his little sister killed, almost dying himself, and becoming a merman while he was unconscious... Xavier wasn't exactly his easygoing self. He just felt tired and hurt. But he could never reveal that to anyone, it'd be unfair on them. He had already caused so many issues, he shouldn't cause anymore.

Diego would've never thought there'd come a time when he'd be so goddamn happy that he wanted to laugh at everything. It was a high that had been going on for a few days now, and Diego was pretty sure it was going to pass soon enough, but for now he was going to take advantage of it. It was super weird to feel good for once and not feel like everyyhing you did and said was judged and could lead you to crying yourself to sleep from pain. But no need to fear that anymore, Diego's dad was dead and he was slowly getting over his shock and starting to feel happy about it. It might've sounded really bad, but Diego, Gabe and Catalina all knew it was something to also celebrate. He had been one real piece of shit.

And Gabe, it was so great to be around Gabe again. Damn, Diego had missed the guy so much. During these few days he and Catalina had offered to take Diego in and you could bet Diego had jumped right into that opportunity. Hell, it had been his childhood dream for the longest time. And now it was true, and Diego could spend as much time around Gabe as he could, or at least as much as Gabe allowed it.
Which was why Diego was sitting on Gabe's shoulders right now.
"Go faster, Perch. We're losing sunlight. Don't you live on that stuff?"
Diego joked and snickered, his cheeks were hurting a bit from smiling so much. It looked like he was sitting on Gabe's shoulders, but in reality Diego was just floating millimeters away from them and Gabe was basically just pulling his along.

Gabe couldn't help but grin as he 'carried' Diego through the park. Despite being bundled up in multiple layers in a somewhat futile attempt to keep warm, he couldn't help but laugh as he attempted to speed up his run through the park.

"Oh, I'm sorry, Feathers. Is me carrying your fat butt around becoming too much work for you? Maybe I should grow some seeds for you to peck out of my hand, Your Highness." He continued his run, only slowing down for a moment to readjust his grip on Diego to drag him along. It was such a strange feeling having his best friend back after being gone so long. The guy was like a brother to him growing up, and not having him nearby after travelling through the portal had been killing him inside. But everything was good now.

Until Gabe saw Xavier sitting on a bench. With legs. And a dog. He wasn't sure what was more surprising. Quickly slowing to a walk as he approached the blond (Diego still in tow), he moved up closer before calling out to Xavier.

"Hey, Xavier. Long time no see."

Xavier had still been staring up at the sky, giving the dog a pet, before he heard Gabe. He softly sighed, too quiet for Gabe or Diego to hear. He wanted to feel happy that Gabe was still talking to him, but he only felt guilty about how much he worried him. Instead, he cracked a grin. “It’s only been a few days, not that long.” He laughed as he looked at Gabe. Almost out of habit, he barely noticed Diego.

He blinked. Wait. Diego? He stared at Diego, eyes narrowed. To Gabe, it would almost look like Xavier was giving Diego the death glare. But this was a common occurrence whenever Diego and Xavier crossed paths. Xavier had remembered that Diego wasn’t fondest of dogs, so he threw the tennis ball away from them for the dog to go play with.

Xavier stood up, still having the ‘almost-death-glare’ look on his face. “Diego.” His voice was cold. But then the biggest grin appeared on his face. A portal appeared beneath Xavier, then one behind the pair. This gave Xavier a small boost into the air. Just enough to grab Diego and drag him down. Because Diego was so light, it was pretty easy to just hold him beneath one arm. “DIEGO, YOU BASTARD! YOU’RE STILL AROUND?!” He ruffled Diego’s hair while he spoke, all the while he had a massive grin and looked like he was genuinely about to cry.

"Well maybe my fat butt will give you muscles on these stick figure limbs. You're slim like a willow."
Diego joked back, it was funny because Gabe was like a plant and all that. He lightly and bit awkwardly hugged Gabe's head for a sec before covering his ears, trying to make them warmer. Diego knew fall and winter were rough on Gabe, he got cold constantly, and Diego had been his personal walking heater multiple times during his life. Not that either of them minded, or more like Diego liked it very much.

Diego looked around, and didn't botice Gabe approaching a boy with a dog by a bench on the side of the road. But when Gabe talked, and said a name that was very familiar to Diego, he looked at Xavier. He blinked, and narrowed his eyes at the guy, death glaring at him. Just like Xavier was doing at him. Diego remained on Gabe's shoulders as Xavier threw the ball for the dog, and said Diego's name with coldness.
"Xavier."
Diego said back with the same amount of icyness. And then the two boys began grinning almost at the same time. But when Diego saw the portals appear his eyes widened and all he had time to say was
"Oh fu-"
before Xavier appeared behind them and dragged Diego down. He was still grinning and cackling although Xavier had him in a headlock and was ruffling his hair.
"YOU THINK YOU COULDA GOTTEN RID OF ME THAT EASY, XAVIER, YOU ASSHOLE?!"
Diego laughed and floated, so he turned around in the headlock and could use his foot to mess up Xavier's hair.

Things had gone from bad to... worse?

Xavier and Diego had begun a staredown, apparently well aware of who the other one was. Which would make sense, since the two might have been teamed up before Gabe had joined their villainous team. Yet before Gabe could intervene between the two, Diego was off of his shoulders and pulled through a portal that had opened behind the two. Xavier and Diego were going to brawl right here in the park over some past issue and Gabe was going to have to fill out another police report and watch his best friend go to jail and his other friend go as well.

Quickly encasing his hand in thick bark in the shape of a gnarled-looking claw, he turned towards the two to pull them apart without hurting himself. But then the two of them were acting so chummy! No longer aggressive, just teasing and messing around.

"What the actual hell is happening? I'm so confused."

Xavier screeched when Diego started to mess with his hair with his feet. "THAT'S GROSS, NOOOOOO." He let go of Diego, quickly wiping his as he backed up a bit. "Why have you got to do this to me Diego, what did I ever do to you?!" He pouted super hard right now, still messing with his hair. Eventually, Xavier huffed and let his arms fall back down to his sides. The dog ran back over to the group, wagging its tail with the ball in its mouth. Xavier promptly took the ball and threw it away from them again. The dog happily ran after it.

Xavier turned to look at Gabe, a big grin on his face. "You know this idiot, Gabe?" He flashed a smirk over at Diego for a second. "This is just a thing me and him do. Known each other since I was in 7th grade, and since he was a baby in 6th grade." He snickered.

Then, he turned back to Diego, a sincere smile on his face. "Glad to see you're alright, man. Feels like it's been ages since I last saw you." Xavier sounded genuine. To be honest, he really was. The past couple weeks had been rough, and this was the first time he'd felt remotely happy since his little drowning incident. But, he also couldn't feel like he'd let Diego down as well.

Diego cackled like crazy at Xavier's screech and leaned back laughing until he made a total flip in the air.
"Oh man, bro, I could make a list but it'd take me 'till my feathers fall off."
Diego answered with a snicker and went to float by Xavier, wrapping an arm around his shoulders.
"Admit it, dude, you missed me. Wipe that pout off your face."
Diego poked Xavier's cheek and was still grinning like crazy. But he floated higher again when the dog came by, only to sigh a bit from relief as Xavier threw the ball and sent it away again.
"Dogs, man..."

"Dude, if anyone was a baby it was you, picking me up like I was some new toy."
Diego elbowed Xavier on the side, trying to look pouty but utterly failing. Then a look of confusion rose to his face and Diego looked between Xavier and Gabe.
"Wait, you know each other?"

Diego smiled back at Xavier and almost went in for a hug, but realized that might've been too much and instead gave Xavier a one-arm manly hug, patting his back a bit.
"It's good to see you too, bro. I'm relatively alright, considering it's been real shitty lately. For you as well."
The last part Diego said quietly enough so that only Xavier heard, and he sent a meaningful look of sympathy and wprry at his friend, referring to all the crap he'd heard about Xavier committing some hate crime.

Gabe glanced at the two again. They knew each other from middle school? I mean, that makes a little sense. Gabe had been kind of a loner growing up, so he didn't really hang out with Diego unless it was outside of school. But once the whole thing with his mom had happened, he had shut everyone out until he could get that solved. It had been the loneliest year of his life. But seeing Diego again when they conveniently teamed up again to fight Angelo's team of heroes, it had been nice.

But they both seemed confused that he knew both of them. I mean, he had known Diego since the two had been alive. Xavier he didn't realize he knew until he admitted to being Vortex. How odd. "...Of course I know you both. Xavier, I've known Diego since we were infants. Diego, I've known Xavier since we worked together attempting to rob the warehouse. Vortex, Condor, and Ent. We're just missing Damsel and we'd have ourselves a shitty villain reunion."

He sighed, the wooden claw slowly vanishing before revealing Gabe's flesh and blood hand once more. At least there wouldn't be a fight today.

Xavier deadpanned at Gabe. A big smirk appeared on his face before he started to laugh. He laughed, and laughed, and laughed. “Oh Gabe, that’s a good one. Diego? Condor? Pshhh.” He wiped a tear that managed to escape from his laughing fit.

But then Xavier realised Gabe wasn’t joking. Xavier’s laugh died down until his face became a bit more serious. “...Wait, you’re serious? They’re nothing alike! Except... I guess the flying. Also the times he hadn’t been in school and I heard about a new Condor thing... and the sense of familiarity I got...” His voice drifted quieter and quieter as he spoke. “Holy shit Diego is Condor.” He finally whispered.

Now, he turned to Diego, eyes wide and mouth agape. “HOLY SHIT YOU’RE CONDOR?!” He flailed his arms for a second. Then he locked Diego in one hell of a hug. “WHY’D YOU NEVER SAY, YOU ASS?!” Xavier sounded like he was halfway between laughing his ass off, or breaking down sobbing. Finally he let go of Diego, and wiped his eyes. “Dude I’m really conflicted with how I feel right now.” He laughed a tiny bit.
