Gabe was nervous. He had said he was going to and now that he had, he was immediately regretting it. It wasn't that big of a deal, right? Meeting up with your ex-boyfriend who you had a clean, mutual breakup with due to how busy you both were? It's a normal and healthy thing to stay in communication. Except this was such an abnormal situation for Gabriel that he had no idea what to expect. He was honestly surprised that Angelo had agreed to meet up with him after all this time. Was he still going to be the same? Or would he look different than he used to? For all he knew, Angelo could look more like Big Angelo now with more muscles and longer blond hair.

God help him if that happened.

Sitting on one of the benches in the courtyard, Gabe glanced down at his phone for the thousandth time. It was going to be fine. Angelo was nice and they'd have a pleasant time hanging out. Feelings were irrelevant in this meeting and trying to pick up where they left off would be kind of strange. But what if Angelo wanted to? How would he respond to that? How was anyone supposed to respond to that?

"Graaaaaaaaaah." He let out a frustrated moan, slapping his cheeks with his gloved hands. Those thoughts needed to get right out of his head this instant.

ANGELO GENOVESE

Angelo was, truth be told, not actually that different. Maybe a little bit more muscular from all the scout training he'd been doing, and finally out of having to wear the high school uniform, but... for the most part, still the same. He still looked the same, anyway. They might have acted a little bit differently, though.

That said, socially he was in a pretty different place. He'd graduated, for one. He'd started a job (even if it was in training) for another. He felt... older. More together.

So hearing Gabe wanted to meet up was... well, it was something else. It felt like a blast from the past as he headed into the courtyard, his hands shoved deep in his jacket pockets as he looked for him.

Aaaaaand there he was, looking... flustered? Frustrated?

"Gabe!" Angelo called, lifting one hand for a quick wave. "Long time no see. How've you been?"

Gabe looked up from the bench, noticing Angelo waving him down and ever approaching. The plant manipulator rose to his feet to greet the blond and couldn't help but give him a quick once over. Angelo hadn't changed too drastically from when they had last seen one another, but he seemed... different? More mature. Gabe, meanwhile, felt like all he had done was learn to work with plants more.

"Angelo!" Gabe smiled, stepping up to the other Halcyonite. He opened his arms to give the blond man a hug but hesitated. Was that too forward? It might be a little awkward, too? Gabe had no idea. He quickly dropped one arm and held the other to shake Angelo's hand instead. That seemed to be the safest bet.

The not-quite-a-huge was undeniably awkward on both their parts. Angelo engaged in the same game of physical affection chicken, second guessing himself before the hug could actually go through, and then shifting for a handshake.

Yeah, that was safe. A handshake.

"Long time no see," Angelo said. "Really... really long time no see, it feels like. I've been busy with scouting stuff, but what have you been up to?"

For a while, Angelo had been effectively taking two completely different programs. He'd been graduating his senior year of high school by night, and training as a scout by day. It had been far more work than he'd expected, and had cut his free time immensely.

Gabe couldn't help but grin at Angelo going into scouting. Of course he would train to be a scout. It was probably as close to being a hero in Halcyon that they could get to, and the blond's tendency to help those around him would be a huge benefit for the scouts. "It really has been quite a while, Angelo. I've been good, just been working off-island as well until recently. I went on a trip out to a few conservation sites, helped with rejuvenating the plant life since my powers work really well in those sorts of situations. Besides that, just helping out in the shop. Met a few people, made friends with a small plant dude... nothing that out of the ordinary?"

Gabe laughed, albeit a bit awkwardly as he shifted back towards the bench to take a seat once again. "So, scout training. How's that been?"

A small plant dude? Angelo's first thought was to wonder if they were thinking of the same small plant dude (how many fitting that description could there be on the island?), but after a moment's thought he dismissed the idea. It was probably just a coincidence, after all.

"That's good to hear," Angelo said, listening to him talk about his stuff. "The shop's still doing well?" Both the shop and La Bussola had opened around the same time, and Angelo knew the anniversary of La Bussola's opening was coming up. He knew his dad was going to do something for it, but he wasn't sure if a flower shop would celebrate the same way a restaurant would.

Scouting, though, was a topic he could talk about much more freely.

"Good," he said. "Really good. It was stressful at the time, but in retrospect having all of us running around like chickens with our heads cut off when the island got cut off from the narrow reality was kind of funny. All my instructors were about to tear their hair out. Every lesson they'd taught us was suddenly no longer relevant, and it wasn't even clear if we'd be able to have scouts anymore." Mercifully, they did end up needing them. If anything, the need for scouts was even more pressing. People needed to be told about what was happening.

"I graduate soon, actually," Angelo said. "Then I'll start going off-island for jobs more regularly."

"As well as any floral shop can do. Mostly get requests for alchemy ingredients since I can just, y'know, grow them quickly. So it's a different crowd compared to Halcyon, but we make it work."

Gabe smiled at Angelo's description; it really seemed hectic but enjoyable. It must be nice to have that need. The desperation to be needed. Which was a weird thing to want, but it was as if you were being relied upon and being actually wanted which seemed like a good thing. Gabe's brain clearly was still in hyper thought process mode so that was making less and less sense in his head the more he thought about it.

"Are you nervous about going off-island, Angelo? Have you done it since coming here?"

ANGELO GENOVESE

"Floral shops can do well," Angelo protested. He liked the idea of it, but at the same time, it wasn't like he'd gone to visit, either. He didn't really need flowers. Alma wasn't the sort of girl who wanted flowers. She was more... well, she liked practical things.

And it would have been really weird to get a bouquet of flowers for a guy who grew said bouquet.

"I..." Angelo said, hesitating before continuing. "I haven't really gone off island except on two quick training trips. I know Angelo--other Angelo--was saying that if I wanted to go to New York, I should stop by and visit his old family. His... I mean, he's not Basilio, but he's the closest thing this world has to him. He obviously misses Angelo a lot, but Angelo's still wanted, so he couldn't go back. I'm not sure I'd really want to go, you know? It's like..." Angelo faltered, suddenly aware he'd been rambling, and went red.

"Sorry," he mumbled. "I've been doing a lot of talking. Have you--do you have any plans for what you're doing after you graduate?"

"They can. Especially considering that I'm currently a one-stop grow shop, I can fill custom orders at the snap of my fingers." Gabe chuckled, then paused. "Well, maybe not a literal snap of the fingers. Plant growth takes time and is honestly draining on me. Fun to do, the after-effects are less enjoyable." His smile faded slightly, watching Angelo mutter an apology. Gabe was surprised at Angelo's moment of hesitation. He figured the blond would exude more confidence, especially with his scout training.

"Angelo, it's okay." Gabe smiled, sliding his hands into his jacket pockets. "I've never been much of a big talker anyway; it's easier for me to be the listener most of the time. It's my nature, after all." He joked. "But I don't know what I'm gonna do when I graduate. I'll probably get a degree in botany or some form of plant science and take over the shop. It's not glamorous or anything but... After Halcyon..."

Gabe trailed off and looked away. His time away from the island had left him with more time to think about the past and come to a few realizations about how complicated life had been back in their home dimension. "But that's okay. It's much better than where I would have been."

ANGELO GENOVESE

There was a lot of uncertainty there, and Angelo wasn't entirely comfortable with the situation. It wasn't anything Gabe had done, but instead who Gabe was: his ex. The guy he'd dated. Even if they'd broken up on entirely friendly terms, a lifetime of watching movies and TV shows and reading books about evil exes and all the things that could go wrong were absolutely weighing on him.

The mention of Halcyon helped in a weird sort of way. It dragged his head away from the fact that Gabe was his ex, and back to what mattered: that Gabe was from Halcyon. That there was shared, common ground.

"Not sure if I can say the same," Angelo said, cracking a smile to signal it was supposed to be a joke. "Depending on how things played out, I'd have either ended up a superhero or taking over dad's companies, after all."

Still a possibility, but a single Italian restaurant wasn't quite the same thing as an entire semi-legal business venture.
