My character Eric Fleetman is really gay. He's slowly realizing that his sexual preference leans almost entirely towards men, and this is awkward because he has a girlfriend who he loves dearlybut like a sister and he doesn't want to hurt her. Also, his home is a parallel universe USA town in the 80s, and he's afraid that AIDS will kill him if he manages to get home and he's still gay.
So, basically, he thinks it's a matter of life and death that he find out a way to become heterosexual. And he's on a magic island, so, clearly there must be something he can do.
He might get in touch with a therapist, wish granters, hypnotists, and potion-makers.
He also might end up drugging himself with a love potion or being messed up by some other weird mind-altering effect, or he might do each of those in turn.
You can get your character involved by putting them in a position to learn about his situation and talking to him or doing something about it, such as a friend or the therapist. You could also have your character be one of the potion/hypnotist/wish-granting people profiting from his desire to cure his gay
FTR I don't actually want him to succeed at permanently becoming non-gay, and if he does get a temporary "fix" it has to have problems that lead to it being reversed.
