When Headmistress Moor asked Jia An to plan something for the Winter Solstice, the lab tech had wanted to decline. "I couldn't possibly," said An, trying to edge her way out of the conversation. "I've never planned a party. I hide in the labs and teach kids how to safely explode things."

Which, of course, meant that she got to do exactly that. Plan a party for the Winter Solstice. And since she was Chinese, why not take the liberty to have it for Dong Zhi Jie, like back home? Barring the fact that her mandarin was terrible and she'd tried to get out of any and all family gatherings... Hey. If it was an opportunity to eat food and drink dessert soups, then she was all for it. And it was cold outside, and warm room! Warm face! Warm hands!

But it still didn't ease the strain on the teacher.

An ended up roping Henghai and Reen into the whole planning shindig. Henghai, being staff nurse and smart guy, was in charge of most of the food items. Reen could do security and get the other foods -- the foods catering to Manta Carlos' more carnivorous-inclined inhabitants. An was going to focus on making tang yuan -- and lots of it.

As it was, An spent three whole days just rolling the tang yuans. She stored them in her fridge, wrapped in cling wrap so they didn't dry out. She'd prepped three flavours -- peanut, black sesame, and plain balls. The fillings were surrounded by a thin layer of glutinous rice flour dough; for the gluten-intolerant people, An had scrounged around on the internet for a suitable replacement. It felt just like home, making the desserts with her family, except now she was alone and prepping for an estimated... over five people. Ten people? Twenty? Who knew??

When the day arrived she made sure to reach the City Hall early. An set up chairs and tables. She hung lanterns from the ceiling. She put up red banners on the walls and wasn’t there supposed to be a photobooth somewhere? On each table were six glass pots of tang yuan -- one for each flavour and dough type. Each pot had a generous serving of balls and sweet ginger soup. The peanut ones were pink, the black sesame white, and the plain ones orange. She knew Reen and Henghai would be arriving soon, so when An had done all there was to do on her side, she just... kinda stood around checking and hoping she really had accounted for everything.

@Lotharingia @Keen and anyone else who wants in! You can say An asked your character to help out with this event (just mention in your post and what you're contributing — doesn't have to be food) if you wanna help. If you wanna just participate, that's good too! This is open to all characters regardless of race!

Things your character can potentially be asked to help with: decorations, food, photobooth, set up and tear down, maintainance, security, social interaction, explaining the significance of festival/food, and others if you can think of them!

Setting: 21 December 2018, just before sunset.

Reen was bundled in so many layers of warm clothes one would think it was impossible for him to move. The cold weather did not agree with the Chupacabra, and all the damn snow did not improve this at all. He pushed his way through the door into City Hall, carrying multiple sealed boxes stacked so high they obscured his face.

The security guard wasn’t all that surprised about being roped into helping with the preparations. It turned out when people discovered you had big strong arms they often expected you to come and help them carry things around, which lead to him doing a lot of set up. Jia An’s request for catering, however, was a little more unusual. He did frequent a lot of blood bars, and a lot of places that supplied things like human meat. So when An asked, he knew the right places to call.

Unfortunately, with the snow piling as high as it was, none of them wanted to deliver to city hall. So Reen had been driving across the island since noon, collecting all the goods in his beat up old car, having to repeatedly stop for the snow clearing crews to make way for the roads.

He was feeling distinctly displeased by the time he arrived.

Reen grunted something that sounded vaguely like a greeting as he entered, putting the boxes down near the door, and took a moment to remove some of his coats (each one looking as old and out of fashion as the suits he usually wore), now that he was finally out of the damn cold.

Henghai had little trouble acquiring food for the party. He came from a wealthy family, but most of what he got didn't even need to be bought. His husband had the ability to make any kind of fruit and vegetable the Earth could naturally grow, and he could make it so they never rot. As a result, there was a bit more food for herbivores and vegetarians. As for the meat, Henghai just bought a variety of raw meat to serve, from human to pig. What Henghai was most proud of, however, was how the drinks served here were enchanted to be fruit punch or normal water if someone was under the legal drinking age. It helped in case anyone tried to spike the drinks.

Henghai had planned to stand around, make sure everything ran smoothly, and to greet any newcomers, but when he saw the security guard named Reen, he moved over to give him a hand. "Here, let me help you with some of those boxes for you. You look pretty chilly."

Celeste arrived somewhat later than anticipated, dressed in a simple red dress with a green sash and green pumps of the same colour. She had had to make sure all the kids had had their dinner and that one of the boys could stay home that evening with Ebviony. Celeste hadn't wanted to leave them alone just in case something happened.

Entering the festively decorated venue at city hall, Celeste saw Jia an almost immediately and waved as she made her way over.

"Jia an, this is so lovely, and everything smells so good," she gushed happily while looking around the hall at all the food on tables and how everything was decorated so colourfully. "did you have enough glutinous flour?" Celeste asked, remembering how they had finally found one store on the island that carried the fairly elusive ingredient.

Reen was the first to arrive. An was relieved. It hadn't been too hard to convince Reen to help out (she felt it was equal parts ego-stroking and him not having anything to do) but she was still grateful for the assistance. Besides, Reen was an intimidating enough figure that people probably wouldn't try anything. Probably. Hopefully.

She noticed first the piles upon piles of coats he was wearing, tempted. They weren't the best but they looked so warm and she was blatantly shivering when the door opened and the wind blew in. Nevertheless, Jia An gave Reen something that resembled a nod and moved to help him with the things he was carrying. She didn't waste words; she remembered their last interactions and she'd save the small talk for when she actually needed it.

Then Henghai was there, also giving Reen a hand. An wondered when he'd come in. Had he been there all along? Before she could think too much of it, Celeste Forestier made her entrance. The home ec teacher was a blessing clear to see. She'd been invaluable, giving An advice with food and even going the extra mile to find her glutinous flour which she needed for the tang yuan.

"Thanks, Celeste," An responded, smiling. It was hard not to when Celeste herself was so jubilant and cheery. Besides, it was dongzhi -- there wasn't any point in moping around. "I did. I appreciate your help."

She couldn't remember who else she'd asked to help, but so far it looked like everyone was here. They probably had a while before citizens started filing in.

"S'fine." Reen murmured with his gruff voice as Henghai moved in. Despite his objections, he didn't move to stop him or An as they unstacked the boxes and set them down on the ground. He gave a simple polite nod to the other teachers as they all came in. Being campus security meant that he knew most of the staff, though he didn't have much more than a professional relationship with any of them.

Once they were done, Reen stood over one of the boxes, placing his hand on the tap holding the lid closed. A boney spike shot out from his wrist, like a switchblade, and he slashed the seal off the box, opening it up to reveal the contents.

Inside were several stacks of medium sized juice bags, all containing human blood, packaged for easy consumption. It wasn't quite as fresh as blood directly from the source, but it provided the flavour and nutrition that people with his particular diet needed.

"Should be more than enough here to cater to any blood drinkers that arrive." He explained as he moved to open the rest of the boxes. He might have gone a tiny bit overboard with how much he got, considering that vampires and the like only made up part of the population. But he didn't know how many people were expected to come, and if nothing else, he'd probably be drinking plenty of it himself.
