Day on the town

It was a cause worth celebrating.

Although Takashi was still trying to catch up to the proper grade level for his age, he'd made a lot of progress since Pluto started helping him. The boy, despite his sort of bland demeanor, was very kind once he settled into their routine of being tutored and tutoring. Especially when he started relating their lessons to working out. That's how he knew they were good friends: they could talk to each other.

Though Pluto's ability to know everything meant that he could understand what Takashi wanted to say before Takashi said it, he still went through the effort of using his mouth to say things. He figured that was at least polite.

And now, thanks to that friendship, he'd passed his first benchmarking progress test of the year, and chances were he'd be bumped up a level in his remedial classes. Maybe he'd be able to be in the same class as Pluto before he graduated. Probably not, but it was good to have goals.

Takashi stood, waiting for Pluto to meet him. Well, stood was the wrong word for what he was doing--he was, more accurately, doing squats while waiting for Pluto to meet him. Since he had some downtime before they'd get going, he might as well get some training in.

He was also, very deliberately, not thinking about the plans he'd made for today. It was going to be a surprise.

He wasn't one hundred percent sure if that would keep Pluto from knowing, but he figured it was worth a shot.

He couldn’t read minds, nor could he predict the future. But Pluto knew this all was for something Takashi was hyped about. He would practically feel his excitement wafting from afar. It was admittedly strange how he honed in on his specific emotion, amidst the usual white mental noise of everyone surrounding him. What was truly odd however was the fact that he had convinced him to willingly trek beyond the confines of the school into the much broader social scope of Manta Carlos City.

Why?

The longer Pluto hung around Takashi, the more he wasn’t sure what was going on inside of him. His distant and cold relationships with people used to be so black and white, but with him… Well, these lines became more blurred. For the first time in forever, Pluto was beginning to realize how little he truly understood in the grand scope of things.
Still, his mind was as always racing with the presence of the outside. It would be a good day for them, at least. The weather was what many would deem pleasant for this time of year, and air quality was passable. At least that put Pluto’s mind a bit to ease when he was on his way to one of his least favorite parts of the island, among many.
As he turned the corner, dressed casually in a loose fitting hoodie and tight-ish jeans, he saw Takashi. Exercising. How like him.

”You know, you’ve already exceeded your recommended daily need for physical activity. Twenty minutes ago.” He stood a few feet away, his hands clasped on top of each other. His body language almost seemed to be more… Lively, than usual. ”Hello, Takashi. Are you ready for the day’s activities?” For a moment in his unblinking gaze, something flickered subtly. ”...Whatever those may be.”

Takashi's breath came in small puffs as he bent his knees, leaned back, and came back up. It was mechanical and rhythmic and to him it was comforting. Lulled into the monotony of exercise, he almost didn't notice Pluto come over and comment on his exertions. He laughed, and stood up. Dressed in loose jeans and a black shirt, on which was written "Needs more Cowbell", in white font. He wasn't sure exactly what a cowbell was, or why more of it was needed, but he thought the shirt was neat.

"Yeah, but if I'm going to defend my title as World's Strongest, I have to go above and beyond my limits!" He pointed in the distance, posing dramatically. If there had been a wind, it would have run through his hair and made him look awesome. At least, Takashi thought it would look awesome.

"Well, I was trying to think about what would be a fun thing to do, and I decided that with you, simple is best. So we're going to go...!" Takashi points down the street in the direction of the shops. "To get some food and go to the amusement park at the pier!"

The greeting that came from Takashi was beyond expected. Pluto knew him enough at this point to know that whatever he did, he did it to his highest potential. Nothing was incomplete, and nothing lingered within his usual boundaries of ability.

”...Hm.”

In a sense, Pluto admired this.

When he pointed off in the distance, Pluto looked at the direction he was pointing in. Nothing was there, but he was learning that nothing had to be. He just… Liked to pose. Pluto didn’t get it, but at least it made his peer happy. Increasingly, Pluto found himself wanting that for Takashi as much as possible.

Even if it came out of a very unusual request.

Takashi’s suggestion for the day’s activities completely halted Pluto’s sign of visible activity. His saucer-like eyes bore on Takashi in a frozen expression, his mouth pulled in a tiny horizontal line. Did he just… Suggest the amusement park? The old one at the peer, with those rickety rides that exerted incredible amounts of nausea inducing inertia, keeping its audiences captive with unsanitary restraints and the sickening smell of overly processed fried foods?

Pluto’s expression broke, only to blink and fold his hands together.

”That sounds like it might be entertaining. I’ve never been before.” He dipped his head and returned it to default position in a small nod. ”Yes. Let’s go, then. Lead the way.”

Takashi could almost hear Pluto's eyes widen. Not really though. After spending so much time with him on a day to day basis, he got really adept at understanding the subtle little quirks on his unemotional face. He found himself thinking about how Pluto would lean on the table in the library with his face resting on his hand, blinking slowly, and then he would close his eyes for just a few moments longer than normal before opening them again.

That was the signal that Pluto was running out of steam and needed a nap or a coffee. Usually coffee because that meant they could pack up out of the library and move to the coffee shop down the street, where Pluto would tell him the exact atmospheric condiitions of the air, the probability of rain down to the hundreths place, and how many people failed to wash their hands as they walked by.

It was kind of draining to hear so much about the world around him, but it was nice to hear anyway. It wasn't fun, per se, but it was... interesting to know so much about the things Takashi didn't even really think about at all.

He grinned at Pluto. "I know that face. Don't worry, it'll be fun." He gestured for Pluto to follow him as he took off jumping and waving down the street. "It'll be fun!"

In the sudden agreement to such a wild plan, Pluto almost withdrew into himself to wonder just what the hell was going on. If someone had gone up to him and asked him this before, he would have dismissed it immediately. Then again, he'd never imagined himself being in this position before. He never imagined himself being asked to go on an... excursion of sorts, without being some sort of favor on the other party's behalf. He couldn't read Takashi's mind. But he could understand the meaning of words. When he went bounding off, he said something that caught his attention- Fun.

What was that again?

Pluto buried his hands in his hoodie. The pockets were cleaned, having been washed this morning. He preferred its clean solace instead of having his hands exposed to the polluted city air. ”If you say so. I have confidence in your decision.” He liked to believe he did, but even he had his doubts. ”If anything, it would be a pleasant way for you to express triumph over your recent accomplishments.” For him, at least. Pluto knew that with his help he was improving. Of course, Takashi provided his own success, to which Pluto would allow for him to take pride in. He deserved it, after all.

Picking up the pace a bit, Pluto almost struggled to keep up with him, as his cohort made a bee line towards their destination. He eventually made it to his side, only stopping when they had reached a do-not-cross flashing sign. When it switched to the white walking figure, it was their time to continue.
If the day wasn't already going against his psyche, that is.

As soon as Takashi had started to take a step out into the street, an instinct shot up within Pluto. His hand, once nestled in his clean pocket, reached out to grip Takashi's bare arm. Hard. With all the strength he could muster within his scrawny arm, he pulled him back to the curb, hoping the suggestion of the action would prompt him to follow suit. Without saying anything, he let the next few seconds speak for themselves. Seemingly out of nowhere, a speeding and inebriated truck driver barreled through the traffic light, only for a police car to follow in pursuit. The siren had faded with the adrenaline rush just a few seconds afterwards. The whole time, Pluto's face didn't move from the sidewalk parallel to them. But once the moment was over, he looked back to Takashi... still gripping his arm.
Like the eyestalk of a snail he shot back his arm to dig back into his pockets, just as drastic as the instinct before. He looked away from him. His expression was still blank, as he muttered ”Twelve years with a license for it to be gone in five minutes. I'd almost pity it if it wasn't so pathetic.” He didn't look at him, though he could sense he was alright. Good. He wouldn't have to ask.

”Let's keep going. At least our destination isn't too much further.”
