It's worth was a lot, actually. Adelaida wanted to help. That meant more than being pressured by society to help a stranger. But perhaps Besom was reading too deeply, or positively, into her meaning.

Besom gave a worried glance at the door when it was left unlocked. They resisted the urge to fly over and lock it themself. "Let's head towards the portals. If I change my mind, I will tell you. But first... shouldn't you lock your door. Are you not concerned about your belongings?"

"Nothing worth stealing, and every now and then people that need a place to stay show up, so I just leave it open. Fairly safe place anyway. Nothing in my house's worth dealing with magical cops for." Adelaida had some wealth in her accounts, but few material possessions to work with, so she was comfortable enough leaving everything open.

She led the way down the city streets. The walk through the night was always fairly pleasant, and she knew the roads well. Where most people were resting, Adelaida was typically still awake and mucking about somewhere.

"Portals are deep in the heart of the city. Connects this place to other places with magic and advanced science. Place's a bit weird, far as I know we kind of exist I think in between planes, so we're overlapping with others which lets magic happen. Far as I can tell anyway," she said, walking casually down the city roads.

It was hard to tell if this woman was overly-generous or stupid, but Besom gave her the benefit of the doubt and went with the former. Several options ran through Besom's mind: this wasn't her only house and acted as a storage, this city was safe, or she held such influence here no one would dare break into her house and steal anything.

They trailed behind Adelaida for a bit, thinking she might change her mind. When she didn't, they caught back up and walked beside her. "That's interesting. Some of the more powerful gods do that to keep their territory safe. Powerful witch covens can hide their property on another plane of existence as well. Does a god or witch rule over this plane?"

Come to think of it, Adelaida never actually bothered finding out who was the top dog on the islands. She'd just accepted the way the island was as fact, and that was that. "Not sure actually who runs the place, but I assume a few gods were involved in making it. Amount of power needed to keep it running makes me think probably a god or so and so's in charge."

She led through the busier districts of town, past the museums, past her favorite restaurants that she briefly looked at to see if she could get takeout later. Without much of a care in the world, she picked up the pace, trying to see if they could make it faster.

There, in the distance, she could see the crowds around the portal hub. The hub was always busy, even in the middle of the night, connecting the island to the world outside.

"It's over there, if you're interested in checking it out."

Besom had stopped walking along the way and began floating a few inches above ground. Flight always gave them a sense of freedom. Small, controlled, and safe.

"I'd like to avoid gods if possible. I mean, no offense, but my world's gods could be temperamental. Being new, it would be safer for me to avoid angering the gods. I may still be in my world if I'm only in another plane, in fact..." The thought caused their body to go still when they arrived at the portals.

A few people passed by them, eyeing their outfit up and down. One large man with horns and lightly glowing white skin whistled at them with a wink. Besom's face remained neutral, knowing to not give him the smile he wanted and would attract him towards conversation.

Looking back at Adelaida, then moved closer to where the portals were. "Have you ever gone through one of these? Are they safe? I've met some people who were unable to hold in their food after a trip to the portal. Others came out with new... features."

"Not a big believer in gods myself. Far as I'm concerned, 'god' just means a lot of raw power. Nothing else. The ones I met, I just treated the same as everybody else." It was a train of thought that nearly caused trouble at times, but she wasn't going to change herself for that. In her eyes, if being herself caused problems, then that was just the way it was. "Enough super-strong people around here that you get desensitized."

Adelaida noticed that Besom was attracting quite a bit of attention, and smiled. Sometimes, it was amusing just how different people here on the island were.

She pointed at one of the portals through the crowd. "I came through that one when I first came here. What's 'wrong' with me wasn't due to that, so for me, I think it's safe. There's enough activity coming through the portals as well that you eventually just start looking at it like a bus stop or a train station, just with a different vehicle."

That was a thought process Besom was never capable of understanding. It was one they heard of frequently and could never agree with. Gods existed, gaining their power from worshipers.

Knowing better than to start an argument, they ignored that statement. "I lived my entire life surrounded by powerful people of all kinds. I've passed desensitization. Now I'm more aware of what to expect from people with power." A flash of a grimace crossed their voice before it returned to a straight line.

"Where do the portals..." Besom paused when they saw a sign explaining when each portal was open and how long. Half an hour each week. Their eyes widened. There were a lot of destinations available. "People are allowed to visit Heaven and Hell here? There are multiple Hells too... This society is truly advanced. Ah, Earth is available too. I wonder if that's my world's Earth..."

"Plenty of places to go if you want to. You could go just about anywhere... you could go home, or you could set off on an adventure."

Adelaida hadn't personally used the portals ever since she arrived. She was content to not go near the things after her own mishap with portal work.

Instead, she let her companion have their fill of the portal hub. It wasn't of much interest to Adelaida, but to them, maybe it held more allure.

"When you're done taking a look, just let me know what else you want to see and we'll pop by."

"Adventures aren't something I've ever done alone. Being here is an adventure enough, and you've seen how well I've handled that so far."

They floated back from the sign and considered their next move. The passersby comforted Besom somewhat, even if a couple gave their clothes a strange look. All around them were people that didn't feel unfamiliar. A woman covered in fur hinting towards werewolf origins, a floating, semi-transparent human with wispy legs who was probably a ghost, a giant man with one eye. This place could be easy to adapt to.

Looking at Adelaida, they smiled. "I'm done here. I'll have to consider if I want to return home before trying any of these portals. There seem to be plenty of nocturnals walking about, so I assume there is an active nightlife. I don't know where I would want to go next. Somewhere... clean and with people but not too many. I still need to keep track of my broom, after all."

"For what it's worth, you've taken it in stride. Pretty calm for someone shunted through dimensions," Adelaida said. The first time she picked someone out of the water, someone who'd fallen there from dimensional travel, they were calm too. At first she dismissed it as Ali being her, but now it was starting to be a pattern.

Maybe I should get a bigger boat.

She thought of what clean could possibly indicate. Maybe it meant a lack of people?

"Park usually has a few people around at this time of day, if you like nature. Marina too, if you're into waterfront dining."
