Nat had initially been pretty dismissive of the rumour situation.

At first, they'd all seemed unimportant. Many of them were just high schoolers, and students spreading rumours about each other was hardly an unusual occurrence.

The first one that properly caught her attention was Alexander Drakenhardt and the talks of him throwing his money around. However, as an isolated incident, it sounded like the kind of thing someone would find in a tabloid rather than a story worth pursuing. Nat had standards, she wasn't going to seriously waste time on something like that.

But now things were starting to heat up, students were being seen going ballistic, shady deals were happening with important people, and the old dragon even seemed to be losing money. Something was going on, and Nat's curiosity was more than piqued.

So she'd starting paying attention to the rumour mill, keeping her ear low to the ground, and was surprised to find her roommate was now being spoken about. How convenient, she wouldn't even have to make any phone calls to start investigating that one.

She'd ordered some Chinese takeout earlier and was just finishing her meal, relaxing in her apartment as she waited for Kon to get back. She figured he'd have interesting thoughts on the matter.

Konpeitō was unaware of the rumors circulating around him. He had a life. Other things to deal with than playing detective. For example, he had recently gotten off of his shift at the arena and was arriving home. Today was nothing noteworthy, but he still figured he might treat himself by using some new bath salts he bought.

He unlocked the door to his apartment and entered to the surprise of Natalie lounging inside with Chinese food. The Chinese food was actually what took in most of his attention, with him only connecting it to Natalie a few moments later.

"Evening, Natalie! Your food smells delicious. Do you have any fortune cookies you would be willing to share?" he asked innocently while closing and locking the door behind him.

"Evening to you as well, Kon." She gave a casual smile and wave as he walked in. "I don't need cookies to give you your fortune tonight, it turns out. I'll just need you to tell me something first."

Nat gestured across the dining table for him to take a seat, before pushing her chair back and reaching over to grab her laptop. She continued to talk while booting it up.

"How much have you been paying attention to all these weird rumours lately?" She asked. It was a rhetorical question, she was well aware that Kon was keyed into them, he wouldn't have even needed to tell her that for her to assume.

The vague way Natalie was speaking discomforted Kon. All he wanted was a cookie to help settle him in. He wasn't in the mood for games.

The tips of his smile tensed as Natalie led into her question. "Quite a bit. I didn't look into them in the beginning, but as things got more extreme I decided to play around and see what's going on. I've been talking to people here and there for their thoughts on the matter." There was no lie. A lie would likely drag the conversation out longer than necessary.

"Why do you ask? Do you need help writing an article about it?"

"I guess you haven't heard then." She said, her expression going from its usual playful smile to something a bit more businesslike. " In that case, I'm afraid I got some bad news for you."

She spun the laptop around to show Kon the screen. She'd written down a few brief notes in a document containing some choice quotes she'd picked up regarding Kon, and his irregular behaviour that people had been talking about.

"Looks like you're the talk of the town now. You and the Welcome Society." She went on. "Apparently, you've been creeping people out, and they think it's suspicious."

No smile lingered on Konpeitō's face. He moved closer to the computer to get a better look at what he was seeing. Not that he needed to get close to see what was on the screen.

It took everything in Kon's power to not lose control of his form right then and there. That wasn't enough. It started off with a lighthearted chuckle. The attempt at lightening the mood didn't help at all. His tusks grew bigger, fur crawled up his body, and he grew several inches in height.

"Oh, wonderful! Good thing I'm one of the later ones. I'm sure most wouldn't take these too seriously. I've built up a great reputation here. This goes against my entire character." And yet, this still fit into the pattern of in-character enough.

"This makes my job much easier too. I have no need to interview myself." He looked Natalie up and down. Without his smile, he came off as annoyed. "Are you?"

Nat quirked an eyebrow at the sudden shift in appearance. The annoyance was about what she expected, but the very physical reaction wasn't something she was used to.

"Not in any official capacity, anyway. I'm your roommate, and part of the Welcome Society as well. I can't exactly publish an article about this, being so close to it."

She spun the laptop back to her, clasped her hands and rested them on the table.

"But I'm planning on looking into the other incidents either way and if this is related, I figured it'd be worth asking." She continued. "If I can prove the others were faked then you'll be in the clear as well, and since I'd rather not get dragged down along with you I'm very interested in doing that."

"So what do you think? Any clue as to who might want to slander you?"

Fixing his appearance was out of his abilities for the moment. The best he could achieve was being kinder to Natalie. She told him about this before anyone else did. It was likely a very recent thing. There was no reason to get indignant with her. She would be a great ally in figuring out this problem.

Konpeitō huffed out a quick, "Sorry," before addressing her question. "I wish I knew. I've spoken to several people and not one of them has a good idea on who may be spreading these rumors. One person I spoke with apparently had one enter his house."

Kon combed the top of hair with his hand, moving his bangs out of his eyes. "Tell me, are people claiming that they've actually seen me do these things? I've prefer if they directly dealt with my doppelganger."

Based on one or two of the quotes he caught, it seemed that way. He didn't want to hear any second-hand "Well I heard" or "Well I think I saw from a distance" claims. Judging by the other rumors, if people are claiming that Konpeitō was walking up to them specifically and being creepy, then it had to be connected to the other doppelgangers.

Nat acknowledged the apology with a small tilt of her head. If the shift had really bothered her she showed no sign of it. She just paid attention to what he had to say, running through it all in the back of her mind.

"From what I can tell, yes. I'd need to go track down specific names if you want to confirm it yourself, but people definitely think 'you' have approached them."

She came to a similar conclusion in her head, it matched what she'd been hearing about the other rumours so far, though they still didn't have enough info to confirm much.

"If it's related to the rest, we can probably rule out someone wanting to slander you specifically, I know you have a wide social network but everyone targeted so far don't seem to be associated that much."

She leaned back in her seat, tapping two fingers together as she thought to herself.

"Why would someone go and impersonate all these unrelated people?"

Konpeitō grimaced. This was all bullshit. But that's okay. It's all fine. This matched with the rest of the rumors and people were already suspicious. He was, for the most part, safe. He just had to keep telling himself this to stay calm.

"I spoke to a friend about this and he had some ideas. One being an aura that targets people's darkest desires and personifies them. None of this may be on purpose, but I do know some people eat through their auras. Someone who feeds on people acting on their desires doesn't sound too unbelievable, don't you think?"

As he thought, Kon squatted comfortably on the floor. "On a more conspiracy-theorist level, someone might be starting these rumors to pull our attention from something bigger they have planned. While the police and citizens are worrying about all of this craziness, they can slip by and do whatever they want. If people notice them doing something strange, they can blame it on the rumors"
