As Ganymede often did, he arrived at Wednesday's apartment with a perfectly-warm cup of coffee. It was magically sweetened and chocolate-flavored, just the way Wednesday liked it.

It wasn't something Wednesday had asked for. Ganymede just came knocking one day, an offering of coffee in hand. It was a while after the incident with that nasty eldritch thing that had gotten Wednesday's familiar, and Ganymede had been checking up on her. Now it was becoming a regular social call.

Today, there was a lot going on in Ganymede's head underneath that fancy new hat of his. He had confessed his feelings to Ailonwey a couple of days ago, and it was still eating him up. He felt like such a damn fool. He shouldn't have let his weakness take hold, he should have fought to keep those feelings to himself. Now they were out in the open, and even though Ailonwey had seemed understanding, he had no doubt that this would change things between them.

Perhaps Wednesday would have some wisdom to offer. Coffee in hand, he appeared in front of the door and began to knock.

Wednesday opened the door and welcomed him with the warm smile she usually did. She had, naturally, be resistant during his first few visits, but after around the fourth time he'd shown up she'd finally agreed to just accept the gift and stop trying to dissuade him from bringing things. Besides, she did enjoy his company.

"Good afternoon, Gany." She said, ushering him inside.

The wards and protections she kept around her home seemed to have intensified over the last few months. Inperceptible to most, though someone with Gany's sense for magic would likely pick up on it. Not that Wednesday's behaviour seemed to have changed much. She simply led him inside, pulling a seat out for him to sit down.

"How have things been?" She asked, "Has school still been nice?"

"It's good to see you, Wednesday."

Wednesday's protests had been very weak, thankfully, to the point that Ganymede just interpreted them as a kind of nicety and not an actual objection. Learning the difference had proven invaluable to him. He wouldn't be standing here otherwise.

Her gradually-strengthening wards gave him pause as he walked in, but he didn't plan on mentioning that. He could understand why Wednesday would be afraid. The wards were likely making her fears more bearable.

"School is going very well, of course. At least, when it comes to my courses." He smiled slightly and took the seat offered to him. "I think I'm well on my way to actually relating to my peers. Other than the NEK0 ones." He could already relate to the other NEK0.

"I'm glad to hear it," She smiled, taking a seat across from him, holding the coffee with both hands, mostly to keep herself warm. "Is the age charm helping? I imagine getting bumped up a few grades might be a little jarring, especially if you have to attend class with a new peer group and everything."

She seemed immediately relaxed, obviously comfortable talking with him given their familiarity.

Ganymede shrugged. "I only skipped one grade," he said. "I was in 8th last year, and now I'm in 10th. So... I still see most of my old friends. The school just doesn't want me getting too bored in my classes. Right now, we're thinking I'll just skip to 12th next year instead of graduating like some of my younger brothers and sisters already have. But I still have time to change my mind about that."

Ganymede paused. He sometimes felt like trying to relate to other young people was a fool's errand. He'd already worked for years. He'd endured indignities that the vast majority of children never have, and none should. The gap in experience was considerable, no matter how much he pined for the chance to have a childhood of his own.

"The charm is definitely helping me, though. I sometimes feel more like myself with it than without it, if that makes sense." It helped him seem more like Wednesday's equal, or Ailonwey's. Not quite, but much closer. "I think I've been anxious to grow up faster, lately." Especially in the last few days.

Wednesday nodded. "I can understand that, especially being in your situation. I think it'd be a good idea to go through twelfth, we only get one chance at high school, you know? I think it's worth trying to enjoy it while it lasts."

She had, after all, missed a lot of the Regular Teenager Experience. She wondered on occasion how she might have turned out growing up in a way that was more normal, even if normal was somewhat hard to measure on this island.

"I know it's not quite the same for you though, with that big brain of yours." She said with a smile. "As long as you're happy, that's what matters."

She sipped her drink.

"And you know you can always talk to me if there's anything in particular bothering you, right?"

Ganymede took a breath.

"Well... one thing has been bothering me. I made a fool of myself the other day. Have you heard about the elf princess, Ailonwey?" Ganymede would fill her in if he needed to - "She received a curse like you'd hear out of a fairy tale. She was in a coma and could only be awakened by true love's kiss. Except I suppose it wore off ten years later, after her kingdom had already fallen. So she's just trying to build a new life here like the rest of us."

"I've run into her a couple of times, and she's a delight to be around. I've..." he sighed, "Actually grown rather enamored with her. But I've had the good sense to keep that to myself, of course. She's far older than me, and I'm..." he struggled to articulate all of the reasons that these feelings would need to go unrequited, but they probably didn't need to be said. He was in many ways a child. Not to mention so lowborn as to have been designed for chattel slavery. And she was a literal princess. "...You know."

"The other day, she asked me the wrong question in the wrong way and I just didn't fight hard enough to resist telling her. So now I've confessed my feelings about her." And as he had spoken, he had gotten more and more worked up about it. Clearly, this was weighing heavily on him.

Wednesday hadn't really expected something like this to come tumbling out of him, she sat back and let him explain, expression thoughtful. Once she noticed how worked up her was getting she reached out a hand.

"Hey, it's ok." She said, softly, patting his arm. "There's nothing wrong with just having a crush on someone, that's normal."

Wednesday was, admittedly, not the most well versed when it came to this sort of thing. But it was clearly distressing him enough, so she wanted to help however she could.

"I've met Ailonwy, actually. She was um..." She took a moment to find a word. "very exciteable, when I spoke to her, but she seemed sweet. I can see why someone might end up liking her. What did she say when you told her?"

Ganymede thought back to it, though it pained him to. He smiled weakly up at Wednesday as she patted him on the arm.

"Of course, she was graceful and kind about it. She let me down gently. But I think I may have shocked her a little, and I'm afraid that she'll be... less affectionate with me. She had this habit of petting me on the head, which I actually really liked. Now I'm just sure this is going to change things between us."

He frowned for a moment. "She said something like, I've been a gem to be around, and if there weren't such a gap between us..." he paused, emulating the way Ailonwey herself trailed off. "And then I told her a little bit about how my effective age is a matter of debate. Which... it is. I could very well argue I'm more of an adult than KC, for example. But I already regret bringing that up." If he positioned himself as possibly being old enough for her, after all, then that would make him more threatening, wouldn't it? It would make her think twice before treating him with affection, the way she used to, wouldn't it?

"I may have only succeeded in making things weird."

"Hmm...I suppose I can see why you're so eager to grow up now." She said, jokingly, giving him a small smile as she did. "Well, you said she seemed graceful about it, right? Ailonwey strikes me as the kind of person who'd be understanding, things might seem awkward right now, but I'm sure she'd have no problem continuing to be friends with you."

She considered for a moment before her hand shifted from his arm to his head. If he didn't make any objection, she'd give him a gentle petting behind the ears, much like she used to do with Frodo.

"Maybe wait a little bit. Once you've settled your own feelings you'll have no problem working things out with her, I'm sure."
