Besom eyed the options from the vending machine. There were some flavors she recognized, many she didn't. There were drinks for several different kinds of blood, and not just of the human variety. A perfect representation of how varied this world was.

"Yes, I'm trying my hardest to get by here, one day at a time. I'm sure I will adapt fine enough, but I'll always find myself most comfortable giving, not receiving. Nevertheless, I appreciate the advice," they bowed their head at the fox-tailed woman.

"What kind of things have you learned? I assume you mean from this island?"

"I mostly learned from humans. Their language, their customs, their cooking, their techniques... It's thanks to humans that I am the way I am now. Of course, without humanity, I still have the knowledge of a beast who lives in nature too. But in this island there were many other lessons, mostly on how other species involved with the supernatural lives. And every day is something new...", Soosei took a longer sip this time.

"I've had many interactions with humans in my world. They were one of the easier species to understand, with there being so many of them and how often they interacted with other species." Besom looked off at the passersby, noting the variety in the crowd. Mostly everyone had some variation of a human form. Whether they were human or not didn't matter. Humans still had a large influence on the island.

"I'll have to relearn how humans here live. They're much more closed off from the... 'supernatural' than I'm used to." They frowned slightly. "That word is still feels strange on my tongue..."

"Really depends, from where I come humans have hailed me as a deity of protection and fortune, all because of a three-way fortunate coincidence. Of course they have only seen the real me twice, and even then few witnesses. Gotta keep low profile so it all stays as a rumor and I don't get in trouble...", Soosei felt kind of nostalgic right now, and undoubtedly so.

Besom stiffened. "Are you a deity of protection and fortune?"

Why did her status have to be a rumor? Why would she get in trouble? Was I led into a trap? Besom thought to themself. Perhaps "trap" wasn't the right word. Had they been talking to a god this entire time, unaware of the danger they were in? How deep were they? Could they swim out safely?

There was something in Besom's posture that tipped Soosei off, but she remained calm and thought on how to respond. "Hm... That should not really matter, should it? I'm nobody's boss, not your enemy, nor a high being. I am simply me: a good-doer fox that lives alone in the forests and sells sweets for a living. So, why should you even be afraid of me, Besom?", her tone still casual, calm.

Besom's face twisted into clear discomfort. They floated back away from the fox woman, their eyes full of suspicion. "I'm not afraid. I'm not sure where you got such an idea from. I do, however, have trouble believing someone who describes themself as a good-doer. Those types of people tend to not be as good as they say. The lack of a clear answer to my question fails to comfort me as well."

"Will me telling you the clear answer bring you more comfort or more discomfort?", Soosei's eyes were sinking into her now empty soda can, "Before I answer, think: what kind of presence did I give you before?". For a moment, she gave silence, admiring the empty can, before...

"I'm a Minor Goddess. I won't lie to you, the first time I used my power it was not exactly for good, but not for evil either. It was both, one person was the focus of my revenge, the other people were the ones I wanted to protect from the first. But care to listen to that story?", with her answer, she stopped admiring the can to focus on Besom, not crushing the can nor throwing it into the trash.

"Your presence was of a sociable, charitable woman. I hope I had not offended you." They bowed, keeping their head down for a couple of seconds. Besom couldn't bring themself to say what was on their mind, worried they would make a mighty enemy. One person was the focus of my revenge, range throughout their mind.

Straightening their back, they nodded at Soosei. "I would appreciate hearing your story, if you would be so willing to tell."

With a kind smile, she responded "You did not offend me, but you did concern me a little in that you could have the wrong idea of me. Let's find a bench first, it's a long story.", and Soosei would once again lead Besom into finding something, a bench this time. And there, once they were comfortable to talk, her tale would begin:

"My life began in the three mountains of Yamato, Japan. I was just a normal kit in a litter of kits, nothing much out of the ordinary, we had a den under an abandoned shrine... My mother was very caring to me and my siblings, we used to play a lot but stay a stone-throw's distance from the den, as mother never wanted us to go too far."

"One day, however, a human burned down the shrine for his twisted passion towards watching flames grow higher, hotter, brighter... At that time, I was not in the den, when I saw what he was doing I tried to attack him but he just kicked me unconscious. Last few things I saw and heard before passing out were the flames crackling and a distant sound of sirens."

"Firefighters had rescued me, I had been treated and nursed back to health, but fled to what was left of my den as soon as I could. Lost everything I had, except of course my coat and my life. I hated the human who took it all from me and wanted to give him, only him, a taste of his own medicine... For that, I developed this:"

She made a bright white flame appear on top of the soda can she had been holding. It was hot, but the can was not melting, nor a bug that flew by did catch on fire. It was as if the flame refused to hurt anything and only wanted to share warmth, but soon enough the flame vanished.

"With the Heavenly Flames I made, gave him Divine Retribution on the first chance I had. The arsonist tried to claim the life of a poor family, but I took control of his flames and tossed it against him. That was also when I was first seen doing something supernatural, because as I fled from the family who witnessed what I did, I accidentally led them to find an antique chest full of the previous owners' savings. In one night, three things happened: I exacted my revenge, protected a family in need, accidentally gave them money that would not only cover their rent but also allow them to have a way better life."

"Ever since, there was talk of Hakushoku, the White Light, and that was the name they gave me when they built me a shrine. Honestly, at first I was so confused and weirded on why they built me a shrine, but then I saw people come by and pray for help in achieving what seemed to be impossible, or for some wealth, and then began to help them in secret in whatever way I could. Mostly in this form:"

Her tail and ears shrunk until Soosei was completely human, her hair looking darker as well. "You know, gotta look like a human to do things in a non-conspicuous way.", she gave a cute giggle with that, "It's amusing, how doing little things in a different way can help one get a job when they failed to apply for it many times.", she added, "And the more I did for them... The more I loved them, humans. Not gonna lie, I even wished to have a family with a human more than once."
