"Oh. I see," Kal replied. He hadn't expected that. What happened to Carmin must've been similar to what happened to him. One day, they just had it. He couldn't imagine how much more difficult it must've been for Carmin though, given his more obvious difference. He wondered how long it took Carmin to get used to what he was now and if there was a way to go back to his human form. "What was it like? Waking up like that?" Kal asked, genuinely curious. "What was it like to become... a plant person?"

Carmin's face took on a mortified look as Kal spoke. It seemed that in his attempt to lie without actually lying, he may have phrased his answer too closely to the actual truth. Kal was supposed to assume that his parents were just plant people without flowers on their heads that could cause them to go unconscious. It seemed he'd underestimated how common situations like his were here on the island.

He probably could've saved himself if he reacted properly, but he froze up instead. "That isn't what I... uh." He couldn't think straight enough to actually save himself and ended up caving in the end.

"Um... fine, yeah... I used to be human. But don't tell anyone okay..." He spoke quietly. "As for what it was like, horrible."

Kalvin, for all his densely sharp insight, couldn't help but watch Carmin freeze up and fail to hide whatever it was he wanted to hide. Kal only realized after Carmin gave up and told him that his intention was to hide his past as a human. It was a moment when Kal realized that maybe his case of human-turned-metahuman was the more unlikely scenario on the island. Well, if Carmin felt he needed to hide his human origins, wouldn't that be the case?

"I won't tell," he promised. If Carmin had such a terrible time adjusting, Kal decided it wasn't his place to prod further about that horrible memory. "Well, how did you find out about the island? Did a fishy dude start following you around, too?"

A sigh escaped the plant guy. He supposed they both had a secret of the other's now, so Kal likely understood and wouldn't go around telling people. Hopefully anyway.

Then there was the question of how he'd ended up on the island. Carmin thought about that one for a moment before deciding to answer truthfully. "When the scouts found me, they couldn't fix me. So I got the choice of either hiding in a basement for the rest of my life or coming here."

Carmin made an effort to change the subject after he answered. "What happened with you, with the fishy dude?"

Kalvin figured he'd made the same choice if he was given those two options. Even if it meant having to live away from family. He actually felt a little bit of admiration for Carmin's resilience. He doesn't know the kid well enough yet but he was doing all he could to survive on this island away from his old life.

When Carmin asked about him, he chuckled a little. "Yeah, that's a story, if anything," he said. "Back at home, I went to a gym to learn self-defense. The gym was in a shady part of town, like that cage back there. So I'm used to seeing these fishy, suspicious dudes around me, right? Some people have tried robbing me even but luckily, so far, I've made it through such encounters safe and sound. But one day, a new guy just began following me around. He's in the gym, he's at work, he's in the streets. It was freaking me out so I stayed on guard. I went to an empty street to lure him in and ask what his problem was. I was ready for anything this psycho stalker threw at me. Then, he told me that he knew about my powers. He began telling me about Manta Carlos. Of course, I didn't believe him at first. It was too good to be true. But the dude gave me a card and left, told me to call him if I change my mind. He must've known I was going to pick the island. I mean, he did say that if I was staying, I needed to go to some science facility to do tests and stuff... And there was no way I was going to let a crazy doctor experiment on me."

Carmin listened to all of Kal’s story. It certainly was interesting, although a little concerning. “How long have you been going to sketchy fight clubs?”

He could certainly tell that Kal was an experienced fighter, but just how long had this been going on? He couldn’t have been that old but from the sounds of things he’d been fighting for a while, even before coming to the island.

"Well, let's see. I got into martial arts school at 12," Kalvin said, mumbling a bit more after with mental computations. "I'd guess around... eight or nine years maybe. Though, I didn't really get into sketchy fight clubs until four years ago. Before that, I was well into legitimate fighting. Mostly they were just competitions though..."

He did quick mental math of the years and decided it seemed pretty accurate. Well, give or take. "What about you? How long have you been a plant person?"

That was a long time. All had been doing this stuff for a very long time. Not that it didn’t make sense. It was easy to tell that before Kal had even said so.

“That’s... impressive.” Especially given that Kal was missing a hand. It was the type of story Carmin really admired. Well, aside from the sketchy fight club stuff.

And then Kal asked about how long he’d been a plant. Normally, this wasn’t something Carmin would share, but Kal had been so open with him, so it felt unfair if he were to withhold information from him.

“Six and a half years.”

Kal shook his head with a wry smile. He wouldn't call it impressive. Sure, it looked like it in the beginning. But when someone looks closely, they'll see how much he'd had to sacrifice for practicing his "art" for so long. He didn't say any of this out loud though.

At the response Carmin gave, Kal's head swiveled quickly to look at him. Six and a half years was a really long time to be a plant person. "Really?" he said, more out of incredulous disbelief than doubt. "How old are you again?"

Carmin looked at the ground in front of them, giving an unenthusiastic “Yep.” Then looking back up again. “Eighteen years old.”

It really was a confusing situation. He got turned into a plant at 12, looked like an 8 year old, and was now 18. He didn’t usually have to explain this type of stuff. “I’ve got this bracelet and an ID to prove it if you don’t believe me.” He wiggles his arm a little, showing his turquoise bracelet.
