Kalvin figured he'd made the same choice if he was given those two options. Even if it meant having to live away from family. He actually felt a little bit of admiration for Carmin's resilience. He doesn't know the kid well enough yet but he was doing all he could to survive on this island away from his old life.
When Carmin asked about him, he chuckled a little. "Yeah, that's a story, if anything," he said. "Back at home, I went to a gym to learn self-defense. The gym was in a shady part of town, like that cage back there. So I'm used to seeing these fishy, suspicious dudes around me, right? Some people have tried robbing me even but luckily, so far, I've made it through such encounters safe and sound. But one day, a new guy just began following me around. He's in the gym, he's at work, he's in the streets. It was freaking me out so I stayed on guard. I went to an empty street to lure him in and ask what his problem was. I was ready for anything this psycho stalker threw at me. Then, he told me that he knew about my powers. He began telling me about Manta Carlos. Of course, I didn't believe him at first. It was too good to be true. But the dude gave me a card and left, told me to call him if I change my mind. He must've known I was going to pick the island. I mean, he did say that if I was staying, I needed to go to some science facility to do tests and stuff... And there was no way I was going to let a crazy doctor experiment on me."
