Salal had tried living in the city, and it had really not worked for her. The smoke and dust really made her nose itch and burn, the constant chatter of people made her ears ring and having to be in a small room surrounded on all sides by other small rooms that had other people in them had made Salal feel...stuffed. Stuck, driven into corner. The bear inside her had been suffering. So Salal had quickly rented a cabin away from the main town area, half a mile from the forest. This place was perfect; there was space on all sides, the air was clearer and Salal could go to the forest whenever she wished and work wasn't far away, since Salal could run pretty fast when she wanted to. Yes, it got a little bit lonely, but Salal occasionally chatted with the farmers and Yvarn came to visit. And hopefully someone else too, judging from what Konpeito had said at the community center.

Salal stood on the front yard of her cabin, watering her narcissus flowers and tulips. She had planted them not too long after moving, Salal wanted spring flowers to bloom under her window as soon as possible. The flowers would really brighten up her humble log cabin made from pine and bricks.
It was the weekend, and Salal didn't work on weekends. Gardens needed tending, but so did Salal's spirit. Saturday's and Sundays were the days when she just breathed, got lazy and enjoyed her favourite things. One of which was flowers. And company, whenever she could get it.
Hopefully today she would.

Konpeitō hadn't expected to take Salal up on her offer. Lately, he had no motivation to go out of his way to speak to people. His two jobs and leadership at TWIS gave him more than enough social interaction. By the time he was free to relax, he was drained and didn't want to deal with anyone, online or offline. People were a means to an end, and he was fine with that.

And yet, he wasn't. Everything was agitating him. Nothing was going right. After living on the island for a year, he thought he had settled down and found happiness, but clearly he hadn't. Now the business of the city was giving him a throbbing headache and he wanted to tell his neighbors to turn down their music.

What Konpeitō needed was some fresh air.

Wearing a pink crop-top hoodie, white jean shorts, and earphones, he jogged out of the city and into the woods. There were no accessories in his hair. His puffy hair was cut short to end a little below eye-level.

The run was nice. It was okay. It wasn't really helpful. His heart wasn't straining to keep up with the pace because it kept adapting. He might as well have been walking. All he had for distraction was his rock music disconnecting him from everyone else. And when that got boring? That's when he considered paying Salal a visit, remembering his conversation with her a few days before.

He didn't write down her address, so he had to go off of his vague memory and GPS to find her. Thank goodness for her being outside or else he might have passed by and gotten lost.

"Salal! Hey! Whew, I was worried I misremembered your address. How are you?" he said as he moved towards her.

Salal was kneeling by the flower bed, checking the tulips for pests, when she heard someone approach. Salal stood up and turned to see a familiar face approaching. The usual gentle smile rose to Salal's face and she wiped her hands to her gardening apron, slightly muddy here and there.

"Hello Konpeito, I am glad to see you. I welcome you, I hoped for company today."
Salal said with a genuinely glad tone and walked up to open the gate, that was on the rock fence which in turn surrounded Salal's house. The fence wasn't all that tall, it was just meant to keep small animals like rabbits and foxes out.

"I am quite well, day started good. My flowers are going to bloom soon, I am excited. The earth says that time of new life is very close."
Salal explained and gestured to the flower bed that she had just been watering.
"And how are you? I made ice tea this morning, it still fresh if you want."
Salal was eager to be a good host, she so rarely got guests. But she also made sure to not be too overbearing, because Konpeito had mentioned he needed me-time and that meant he was probably stressed or worried.

Salal sure was living up to her career. The exterior of her cabin was beautiful. Jealousy spread throughout Konpeitō's chest. He enjoyed living with Natalie. She wasn't around much, which was discomforting for someone who spent so much of his life around another, but she was a presence. He could have done without living in an apartment. A house, or even a cabin, would have been better.

"I'd love some tea," he replied as he entered through the short gate. "I'm sure your flowers will look beautiful. I'm not much for gardening, but if I had one, I would surely hire you."

"That is high praise, I thank you. Good care of nature is important to me."
Salal said and smiled happily. She also looked at her flowerbed once more, feeling pride and warmth that she usually got when taking care of living beings. Whether it was plants or people.

"Come here, I will pour you some."
Salal invited and gestured for Kon to follow her inside. The door of her cabin was tall and wide, since Salal herself was so. She had chosen this cabin partly because the floor plan worked for someone her size and girth but still wasn't too big to afford.
The inside of Salal's cabin was reminiscent of a hunting lodge, but without any dead animal parts, or a summer cottage. The walls were bare wood and so was the floor. Salal had few rugs on the floor, the other cream and the other beige coloured, and the rest of the decor was formed of bright, natural colours. There was a lot of natural light streaming in from the large windows on both the right and left wall and the curtains had a forest theme. The cabin only had one larger main room with a kitchen corner, couch and a table with three chairs, and at the back wall there were two small doors that led to Salal's bedroom and the bathroom.

"Please wipe feet and take off shoes."
Salal asked kindly and pointed at the floor, that had a small carpet for wiping off shoes. It read "Welcome" in bright green letters. Salal hadn't had shoes in the first place, so she merely wiped her feet and then slipped on her inside slippers. She went to the fridge and pulled out the ice tea, lemon and mint flavoured. Salal took out two glasses and set them on the counter, pouring tea in both of them.
"Sit where you like, it no matter to me."

Wiping his feet and taking off his shoes was no problem when he only had paws. He rubbed his paws against the carpet, all the while making sure there wasn't any dirt on his fur, then entered Salal's large but modest home.

"I didn't bring any slippers, but I think I did a fairly good job keeping myself clean. I'm very careful about this sort of thing before entering a person's home."

As he spoke, he looked around the room for a place to sit. His first thought told him to lay down on the floor, preferably on one of the carpets. His rational thought following afterward was to take one of the three chairs. The couch would have been preferable, but he could see himself spending the rest of the visit uncomfortably resisting the urge to lay down and spread out.

When settled, he gave a sound between a laugh and a sigh. "I should have planned out the visit and brought something for you. This is the second time you've done something for me."

Salal picked up the two glasses and walked over to the now-settled Konpeito, chuckling a little at his words. Salal handed him his ice tea and she herself went to sit on the cream coloured carpet. Salal crossed her legs and let her fingers sink into the soft carpet.
"I love to help, I love giving joy. You no need to give me something just because I give. You can give if you want to, out of the joy of giving."
Salal said with a gentle smile and carefully sipped from her glass. Salal was mindful of her teeth, they sometimes came in the way of drinking from glasses.

"Have you had good day?"
Salal asked with genuine interest, looking at Kon with her head slightly tilted. Salal hoped she could help Kon relax and have a nice time.

Well, shit, if she's going to sit on the floor, so is Konpeitō. Sliding from his seat, he sat to his right side before taking a sip of his tea.

"You've brought me joy with this tea. It's a wonderful drink after a workout." If you could call what he did a workout.

"My day's been fine," he answered with a sweet, but somewhat plain tone. "Other than going for a run, there wasn't much to it. I needed to get out of my apartment and take in some fresh air. How was your day?"

Salal chuckled when Kon also decided to settle on the floor with her. Salal very much preferred to sit on the ground, perhaps it was the animal in her. Sitting on overly soft surfaces made her feel unstable, somehow. It was much nicer to feel steady, trustworthy ground below you.

"That is good. I have brought myself joy with it as well."
Salal agreed and laughed a little, taking another sip from her glass. Kon did look like he had been exercising, he had that kind of outfit on. Salal had very early on learned how people preferred to wear all kinds of different outfits for different occasions, she thought it was fascinating.

Salal's ear twitched when Kon answered and she tilted her head ever so slightly as she listened. She didn't know why, but somehow something in Kon's answer felt off. Salal wasn't still well-versed enough in social interactions to determine what it was, but she let it be for now. Salal wouldn't ask anything unnecessary. Instead she gave Kon a genuine smile and answered.
"Air here is fresh a clean, you in right place. Much different from city, I hope you like."
Salal smiled and took a sip from her ice tea before continuing.
"My day just fine. I am free on weekends, do not do work. Time for me. Today I plant tree on backyard, apple tree. Next year it gives crop, I can't wait."
Salal's tone was genuinely excited, she couldn't wait to grow and then pick her own apples and make all kinds of things from them.
"I also help farmer on field, worker shortage and I like work. Feels good get hands in the earth, feel the soil."

"That all sounds relaxing," mused Konpeitō. "Gardening isn't my thing, but I enjoy laying in the grass. I'm hoping to do that a lot more during the summer." Drinking his tea, he thought about his plans for the future. He missed when he could lay outside and take a nap, the latter being something that was seemingly impossible for him to do now. Maybe once stress was less of a factor he could do that at the park. Then again, people weren't too pleased when they saw someone sleeping in a public space. There was also the issue of crime, no matter how low the rates were on the island.

"Work can be relaxing," he continued. "Today was one of the rare days where I had no work to do. I can't stand being inactive, so I figured I would keep myself busy. Not being productive is my one weakness," he finished with a laugh.
