The fact that Kon liked laying in the grass made Salal smile, because he had some features of a cat and if Salal knew anything about cats was that they liked lazing around. Salal always felt a special kind of connection towards people that had animal characteristics and behaviours, the same had happened with Yvarn and now Salal felt a like that towards Kon a bit.
"I know good places in forest for that, if you wish I can show?"
Salal suggested. She had explored the woods quite a lot and had found some very nice spots. She would be happy to share them. After all, nature was meant to be enjoyed.

Salal had initially struggled, and still did, with the concept that people did jobs that they didn't enjoy. Salal couldn't imagine doing something for living that she didn't want to do, which was why she had automatically become a gardener after arriving on the island. So Kon stating that work can be relaxing was more or less a given to Salal.
"I know what you mean. When I was still whole bear stay still meant death. Must always be ready, always be moving and be strong. If you stop you do it in secret, like in deep cave, where no one see. But now I learn how to stop when I feel like it, it important. Your mind says you can't, there is much to be done, but body knows you are safe and this is good. I am still learning, but I do better now."
Salal explained, gesturing a bit with her hands to accentuate. Salal liked sharing her thoughts and views, especially now that her English was improving little by little. It was wonderful to be able to express yourself.
"What you think? I love having discussion."
Salal encouraged Kon to share his opinion as well, and she was clearly genuinely curious as to what he thought.

A chill went down Konpeitō's spine. Salal's talk about her adapting to no longer being a "whole bear" in the wilderness made him think about Valli's advice. Something about trauma making him think he still had to keep himself safe from a threat that didn't exist. That advice didn't feel applicable here—she was a predator who had to keep herself safe, while he simply didn't like being bored—and yet he found himself relating a little too much to her words.

He hid his grimace behind a long drink of his tea. His eyes closed as he thought up a response that wouldn't turn the conversation towards a sour note. Lowering his tea, he opened his eyes, took a breath, and smiled. "I would love hearing about places in the forest good for relaxing." Starting off with something unrelated to everything else she said helped calm him down. So far, he detected no change in his appearance.

"I never lived out in the wilderness. I'm a house cat, you could say." He laughed. "Everything was comfortable. That doesn't mean I don't understand. I've met a lot of people have a rough time adapting to the calmness of the island. The freedom of it too. Being able to stop and take a breather or work to your heart's content whenever you want."

Salal got the small, nagging feeling that she had sometimes had when talking with Tyler about something that he didn't want to talk about. It was the feeling of when Salal said something wrong, and she didn't like it. Something about Kon's reaction made her uneasy. But Kon himself, after a long sip of tea, seemed to not want to draw focus on his reaction, so Salal respected that and didn't ask or react strongly. She kept a small gentle smile on her face, which wasn't hard.

Salal listened to Kon talk about his experiences, his life. It sounded like he could relate to some extent. Many people on this island probably could. Salal didn't join in on his laugh, she felt like she couldn't when something about this topic had seemed to bother him. But she let her smile widen a little bit and nodded as Kon finished his story.
"Every person have own way to survive. I live in forest, you live in house, not same dangers or experiences but similar feelings. Life is danger in some way no matter where or who you are."
Salal agreed and momentarily pressed a hand against her chest, where her heart was.
"But as you say, island is peaceful. When I leave forest I...scared, unsure, not know what coming. I sometime feel this all not real, is too good. Back home I dream of living as person, my friend told me it not going to happen. Humans, they...scared of me, hurt me, test me."
Salal let out a small sigh. Remembering all of this was making some dark feelings surface. Salal still didn't know where Tyler was or if he was even alive, and mentioning coming to the island reminded her of...

But Salal quickly returned her thoughts back to this moment, smiling a little as she went on.
"But now I am here, I am happy and thankful. I am person, like everyone else, I want to stay person for a long time."
Salal finished her ice tea and stood up, taking her glass to the sink.
"You want snack? I have honey buns and many cookies.. Salty ones also, I remember you not like sweet."
Salal asked, turning her head to smile at Kon. Salal had a lot of food in her cabinets, she ate a lot, and she especially had sugary things. Salal loved sweet things so much.

Konpeitō wondered if he did something wrong. He didn't think his joke was particularly offensive, yet Salal didn't seem to find it amusing. Oh well, he couldn't get them all.

He nodded at her words, almost feeling like they were having two different, yet similar conversations at once. One being a conversation he desperately didn't want to have. However, some of what Salal said caused his ears to perk. The two of them were surprisingly similar.

"I enjoy sweets, but people tend to overestimate how much I like them based on my appearance and name. I'll take a honey bun," he answered. All of what Salal said was pretty heavy. He had to take a moment to figure out a delicate response without stopping the conversation completely.

"I'm happy that you found safety on Manta Carlos, Salal. There's actually a disorder for newcomers who come to the island and believe they're dreaming or in a coma. I've heard it get called new kid syndrome, but its actual name is reality dissonance disorder. I think a lot of newcomers experience a lesser version of it to a degree. I certainly did."
