By a hill in the woods

Alex tried not to think about how the jagged bones exited the wendigo's body, and forced himself on the topic instead. "A ranger, huh? I guess that's not very different from me, then!" Alex had never officially had a job, but he had stumbled upon numerous hunters and rangers throughout his travels, and he appreciated both professions. "Were you a ranger here on the island? Did you have some sort of station?"

To himself, Alex noted that the wendigo seemed to have two mindsets. The current one was much preferrable over the one he had first encountered. Alex knew very well how it felt to starve, and he had been mindlessly gnawing on bones before... but not to this extent. There was something supernaturally wrong with the wendigo, that much Alex could tell. He decided that, when the wendigo had left his territory, Alex would go directly to town and ask around. Maybe there was a way to help the poor thing through magic... or maybe it was for the best if it were put down for good? Alex did not like the thought of this thing hunting specifically humans in his woods. That was not the proper way. 'At least hunt other creatures as well', he thought in the back of his head, 'human's aren't that good.' Taken aback at what he had just thought, Alex lost focus of what was happening around him for a second. He knew for certain he had never tasted human flesh. What was he thinking?

"No. I came here....some time ago, but I never worked here. I was a ranger..." Wess thought on it, but couldn't recall where he'd been a ranger. "I remember lots of trees, naturally, but there were mountains, too. I was in that division, most of the time. Lot of cold, lonely places up in the mountains." The Wendigo shook his head before finishing off the ribs.

Manta Carlos was sorely lacking in humans. Truthfully, Wess was content with any sentient humanoid flesh. Not that he knew what most of them were by name. He couldn't taste the difference in anything he ate, so he had no preference when hunting.

When Alex got lost in his thoughts, Wess started watching him. His look wasn't quite predatory, but his eyes were hungry, and there was a stillness about him that suggested trouble.

"You okay?" His voice was soft.

Alex collected himself, almost immediately noticing the stare, or rather, the stillness. He proceeded to put more firewood on the campfire to act natural. He was still bothered by what that thought had been, but he left that for later.

"Yeah, yeah I'm all right." Alex straightened up a little bit. "So... how did you get to the island, then? No offense but I really doubt they sent an invitation from the academy." There was no reason to deny it, they both knew the wendigo was more of a monster than a person. Alex had started breathing through his nose again, determined to remember the scent of wendigo perfectly. Instantly determmining this scent from normal stench could prove to save his, or someone else's, life one day.

Alex's adding wood to the fire snapped Wesley out of whatever predatory thoughts he was having. Wess' smile showed off sharp teeth stained with old blood. The Wendigo was slouching, leaving him looking smaller than he was.

"I remember being called somewhere. I don't know how I got here, but it wasn't by boat or plane or anything." The more Wess spoke, the more his slight country accent came to the forefront. "I wasn't in my best mind, I suppose. Things are a bit blurry from that time in my...life." Could Wess really consider this living?

Alex didn't know if it was possible to swim to the island, maybe there was some chain of islands stretching from the continent to the west? Alex didn't know. And he was pretty sure there were sharks in these waters. So how Wess got to the island without a vehicle of some sort was impossible for him to grasp. He remained quiet for a few seconds, trying to figure out how in the world Wess could have ended up here. He moved away from the campfire a little bit, he was getting way too warm.

"Maybe you were unconscious, and were transported here?" Alex suggested. It made sense to Alex if friends or family would have kept the wendigo captive while seeking help. They could very well have knocked him out to make transporting easier. This island, if anywhere on this planet, would be the safest bet if one were to look for a cure, Alex thought. In that case it was either that, or they shipped him of to the 'monster island' with all the other 'monsters'. He didn't notice the appearing dialect quite yet, but he would notice in a few minutes.

"Maybe," Wess agreed for simplicities sake. He didn't sound at all convinced. Wesley had never thought about how he ended up here, only that he was. He thought that was the animal in him because he didn't remember being like that when he was human. Maybe he had been, though. He often saw things in the present and tried to pretend the future and the past didn't matter or even exist.

"I don't recall there being any people around me at the time." That wasn't strictly true. There had been people around him, but they were dead. Wess decided it was best not to say that. "There was this feeling; it was kind of like a voice. Real clear. It wasn't real, though, but it felt like it was. I remember following that, and then I was here, and things were just easier."

Wesley shifted and stood, looking to the treeline. He would have to go soon. The fire had kept him at bay, but he had noticed Alex put some distance between the flames and himself. Wess didn't have much control, and he was out of gnawing material.

Alex just nodded in silence as the wendigo explained. He definitely thought that some... shenanigans, in lack of better words, had been going on. Something wasn't quite right. But that was long ago, and Alex didn't want to go digging up things he had no business with. He looked up att Wess when he stood up. "You're leaving?" he asked, as he slowly got up as well.

Wess wondered if Alex had gotten up because he expected the Wendigo to attack him. Wesley should have been offended, but instead, he appreciated Alex's preparation.

"Yes. I figured I should leave before... I overstay my visit." It was the gentle way Wess suggested that he may or may not attack Alex.

Alex had meant nothing by standing up, perhaps for the sake of manners. He was himself unsure what he was doing. Shaking hands was not an option. Hugging? Unthinkable. So he just stood there.

He took the hint and put his hands in his pockets as he eyed the wendigo as well as he could in the light from the campfire. "Will you visit again?"

Wesley smiled uncertainly at Alex's question. He couldn't determine if Alex was asking for precaution or because he wanted Wess to come again. Wess figured it must have been the first.

"I'll stay out of your territory when I can help it." Wess honed in on Alex and sniffed the air, trying to memorize the scent, but when he was on the hunt he wouldn't recognize Alex's scent unless he was hunting him. The woes of cursed life.
