If life had been fair, Anastasia would have been done school already. She'd already graduated when the fact that she was not-quite-human had come out, and Starlight Academy had worked on more European schooling standards. So it was back to school, even if the school didn't seem entirely clear on how she would graduate. Would she graduate if she failed everything? She already had a highschool degree. It wasn't as if they could revoke a degree she'd already received, the only question is if the college would accept it.
The compromise had been a year of schooling, primarily to make sure her English was up to par, although the lovely secondary side effect was helping her get used to the less ordinary residents of the islands.
There were a lot. She wasn't used to them at all, but aside from one point where she'd nearly fallen over in fright and alarm, she at least hadn't reacting too terribly. Some of them were just... well, she'd expected people like her, people who looked human but maybe weren't quite, and instead she'd found a seemingly endless supply of people who would never pass as human. Shark people and tree people and who knew what else. Some were so strange she couldn't even put words to them.
So it was a relief when she'd come into Home Ec and found a human being was doing the teaching. A short woman who sort of reminded her a bit more of a mythical dwarf, but a human none the less. She was quiet for the majority of the class, aware she was a newcomer and no doubt out of place, but she wasn't willing to let it stay that way long.
So when the class wrapped up and people started to file out for lunch, Anastasia took the initiative, adjusting her bun, cleaning up her station, and then heading up to the front of the classroom.
"Miss Powell? I just wanted to introduce myself, since I'm new to the class. My name is Anastasia Mikhailovna Usenko." Full name, which was how it was done in Russia. It was more a habit than anything, because she knew most people didn't use patronymics at all. Her accent was still thick, although not quite choking, and she was mindful and doing her best to make it more understandable.
