A parasite. Nothing more, everything less.

Inhaling the crisp midnight air, Raella stood at the edge of the boundary once more. The forbidden forest loomed over her more formidable yet more vicious than the depths of the oceans. Shadows of the vast and dense canopy flickered and danced under the moon's gentle luminescence. She was here for one thing and one thing only, to apologize. Sure, the nameless creatures wandering aimlessly through the woods would never fully comprehend her words. However, just perhaps, whatever deity listening in at that moment would find it within them to forgive her. Forgive her slaughters, forgive her existence.

With a pace too slow to be casual, she entered the forbidden forest. Unfurling her wings ever so slightly, she watched silently as a lone misshapen figure approached her, towering above her as though she were a mere fire ant. The sound of flesh ripping to shreds became increasingly potent as it's wry and grotesque body maneuvered in ways it was never designed to. Placing both hands one atop the other in front of her thigh, Raella pressed the hem of her dress down as bowed to the revolting monster and locked her gaze on the forest floor. Keeping her voice grim and barely louder than a whisper, she then addressed it in hopes her message would at least be partially conveyed.

"I'm sorry."

And she waited. More vulnerable than a sitting duck, more still than a pupa, she waited for her well deserved punishment.

Forest. Hwum had never been to a forest. She had seen plants, of course, and some trees, but had never actually been surrounded by them, so she couldn't see around her. But that didn't bother Hwum. Rather, she was amazed, looking at these glorious giants all over. It was simply breathtaking, as Hwum slowly walked between them, her eyes wide with wonder.
But as she walked the trees started getting bigger, and though Hwum's tremor sense was dulled by the thick soled winter boots she was wearing she could swear she saw large figures pass by her, fast but not fast enough for her to not catch their image. Hwum had seen a giant spider earlier, maybe these figures were those nocturnal residents of the island, out on a walk?
Hwum doubted it, so she braced herself in case she needed to defend herself. Maybe she shouldn't be here...

Suddenly Hwum stopped, and frowned. Some ways ahead of her there was a human figure, and facing them was...
A monster. What was going on??
Hwum started walking towards them, her steps quickening as she got close. And when Hwum was close enough to see the monster didn't look too happy, towering above the girl, she shifted into her dragon form.
Hwum, careful not to hit the girl, slammed her heavy body against the monster, easily shoving it aside and away from them. Hwum let out a low, rumbling roar, not one loud enough to create an earthquake.
"Don't harm her, beast!"
Hwum growled in her now much lower voice.

Seconds ticked by slowly but surely as Raella remained poised yet submissive. However, the blow never came. Instead, right before her eyes, a gargantuan figure collided against the revolting creature, propelling it into depths of the woods. Instinctively, Raella doubled back a few paces, wings extending to their full length and her hands curled in tight fists in front of her chest as she struck a defensive stance. Locking her gaze on what seemed like a new threat, it soon dawned on her that the "intruder" or, perhaps, her savior, was a dragon.

Don't harm her, beast!

Raella heard the growl penetrate the atmosphere and resonate throughout the vicinity. So threatening yet somehow, so protective. Realizing the dragon meant no harm, she relaxed her posture, allowing her arms to fall limply by her side. Folding her wings behind her back once more, she cautiously approached the dragon. An endless swarm of thoughts relentlessly surged through her mind yet her voice remained lost, as if it had been blown away by the chill breeze.

And again, time crawled by as a delicate silence fell between the two.

Raella quickened her advance, closing the awkward distance and paused right before Hwum, completely mesmerized by the dragon's stature. With her voice barely any louder than a whisper and her tone that of a cornered prey, she found it within her to rasp out. "Thank you... I... I really don't know what I was trying to do back there." Almost as if the trees were rustling in encouragement, Raella pushed on to inquire, her pitch just slightly more steady this time "Who are you?"

Hwum remained in wait, her eyes locked to the forest and all her senses sharp, in case the monster came back and tried to claim their lives. But Hwum could feel it had gone away, outside the field of her tremor sense, and she relaxed ever so slightly. Hwum turned around as she felt the girl she had saved walk towards her, and Hwum looked down on the girl who looked rattled. And when she spoke her voice was unsteady. Poor thing, having to go through that kind of experience. Hwum looked upon the girl with gentle eyes, and began shifting back.

Raella would see the giant dragon shift before her eyes, and after few moments there would be a girl almost 20 centimeters shorter than standing in front of her. Hwum was dressed snugly for the winter weather, and the lenses of her sky blue glasses shimmered a bit in the moonlight. She was smiling at Raella, and bowed a bit towards her.
"Hwum Roch'Der, at your service. I tell you, this part of the forest is really dangerous. Monsters crawling all over the place. I wonder why they haven't closed it off or something."
Hwum said and shook her head a bit in disbelief. Someone like this girl could really get hurt if they wandered here.
"And who did I have the honor of saving?"
Hwum in turn asked, and smiled at Raella with curious eyes.

Upon watching the mighty beast shift into the image of a petite woman, Raella unconsciously took a step backward in shock. She wasn't like the others; her skin tone was dark, almost as dark as the overcast shadows. However, it was unique, different, like the most stunning black swan she'd ever seen. Looking into her eyes were like staring straight into calm pools of an eternal abyss, an unsolvable enigma yet ever so humane. As she spoke, her voice was a million times lighter than before, comparable to even a nightingale's melodious singing.

At that moment, Raella eased herself back into her usual facade. Lips curling into the subtly teasing smile she had perfected after so long, she placed an arm behind her back and the other bent across the front of her waist as she bowed to Hwum. With her voice laced with false confidence, she then proceeded to address the other as if she were a completely different person from before.

"Well, this is the forbidden forest after all. Worry not for I know of the dangers lurking within these boundaries."

Walking a few paces forward, Raella began to relax her posture, letting her shoulders drooped downwards in a graceful slope and fully conforming herself to her familiar front. Any lingering evidence of her previous grim state had now completely vanished into thin air. Extending her hand for Hwum to shake, she tilted her chin down slightly to meet the other's gaze.

"The name's Raella, a pleasure to meet such a lovely maiden at this late hour."

Hiatus
It was strange. As the two began having a conversation, and Hwum introduced herself, it was like the girl put on a mask of sorts. She hid her vulnerable state from earlier, and instead adopted an expression that was the opposite of earlier. Hwum watched the girl with slight confusion and concern, why did she do that? Change her manner like that when she was still probably in shock from earlier. Hwum was always open about her own feelings, so she sometimes didn't understand other people's need to hide theirs.

"Forbidden forest? Oh no, so I'm not supposed to be here? I hope chief won't find out..."
Hwum looked worried and nervous for a moment, looking down with a thoughtful expression. She had simply told her chieftain that she was going for a walk in the woods, Fweiu didn't have to know Hwum had accidentally wandered into a forbidden area.
"But I'm glad I did come here, would've been horrible if something happened to you."
Hwum corrected herself, and smiled at the girl.

Hwum wanted to ask the girl if she was alright, ask her why she was forcing herself to act that way. Or was she acting? The girl, Raella as she introduced herself, seemed like a different person from earlier. Maybe her emotions just fluctuated quickly like that, what did Hwum even know.
Raella's words, about Hwum being a lovely maiden, surprised Hwum so much now she had to take a step back. Hwum laughed nervously and her face blushed, though it wasn't discernable because of the dark and her skin.
"Lovely maiden? Oh no no no no, I'm nothing of the sort, sheesh. But it's nice to meet you, yes."
Hwum, her cheeks still warm, reached out her hand and shook Raella's hand. Hwum had a firm, but soft grip and her hands were surprisingly big. And she didn't let go, as she held Raella's hand and began leading her out of the forest.
"We better not stay here, who knows what monsters are still lurking around. Come on now, follow me. I know the shortest route out of here."

Perhaps Raella had made her switch just a little too obvious. Too rash and unprecedented for it to be brushed off as a natural occurrence. However, now wasn't the time to think about such trivial matters. Besides, should Hwum enquire, Raella could once again shuffle between the masks and string together yet another net of deceptions. Thankfully, it seemed like that wasn't necessary as of yet.

As the petite girl flashed a look of concern over being on the forbidden ground, Raella quickly gestured her hands in a short, dismissive wave. "Worry not, it isn't that bad! In fact, I come here quite often and I've never been caught since the school doesn't keep a close watch of who goes in and out. You won't be in any trouble, trust me." Upon hearing the other girl's relief at her wellbeing, a shard of disbelief stabbed at Raella deep within the confinements of her chest. Too subtle to be noticeable, her facade begun to dissipate. With her tone that of a lost child gone astray, she whispered under her breath in an almost inaudible volume. "It really wouldn't have mattered either way."

Chippering up immediately after, Raella was slightly taken aback by Hwum's rather bashful reaction to her casual flirt. "Precious" would be the only fitting word to describe such a response. Voice dropping to a lower octave, her next sentence came out almost like a purr. "Now now, don't deny the obvious darling, anyone with a working pair of eyes can tell your beauty is nothing to be ridiculed about." However, when Hwum continued to cling onto her hand, Raella felt an unfamiliar rush of heat sting her cheeks. Though she was tempted to let go, it felt like an unseen force compelled her to hold on and accept the other's offer in leading her out.

As they walked, Raella found herself at a loss for words. Though she desperately wanted to strike up a conversation, she knew that sparring a glance at the other would cause her to revert back to a blushy mess. Hence she quickly formulated a "foolproof" plan. Locking her gaze on the path before them, she focused all her attention elsewhere. Ironic how such an insignificant act of skinship was enough to bring the resident flirt to her knees. Halting all suggestive advances, she then spoke in the most casual and carefree tone she could muster.

"I haven't seen anyone like you around before, are you new at Starlight?"

Despite Raella telling her it was okay Hwum couldn't help but worry. Hwum's clan had been worried precisely because there were all sorts of horrors out in the world for a half blind girl like Hwum, and even though she was an earth dragon that could lift boulders three times her size the island was full of people much stronger than that. If something happened to Hwum or she messed up somehow chief would send her straight home, back to those tunnels, and Hwum didn't want that. At least not yet.
"Hush you, of course it would've mattered. Your life's precious. At least it is to me now."
Hwum said in a brisk, but gentle tone when Raella put herself down. Hwum's dragon hearing didn't miss those words. She did wonder why the girl thought she didn't matter, but even ever so blunt Hwum didn't start asking such private questions upon their first meeting.

Raella kept on insisting Hwum was beautiful, and for the next line she didn't even have words with which she could answer. Hwum merely looked down and chuckled nervously, letting out few "Oh geez" and "Stop it"s. Her cheeks were still burning, but thankfully it was night and as they began to walk Hwum could keep her face facing forward. Surprisingly the handholding didn't embarrass her at all. To that Hwum was used to.
Hwum didn't force herself to have a conversation, but she did point out if she saw something pretty in the surroundings and made small comments, not caring if Raella answered or not. But eventually Raella did speak, asking the question Hwum had been asked a couple of times now.

"Oh yes, have barely been here a few days. Came with the chief and her family members. Ah, I'm from the Alps, you see. From a dragon community called Akt'Anir."

Despite the fact they had met only moments ago, Hwum was already vocalizing things which hit way too close to home for Raella. Your life's precious. At least it is to me now. A part of her did want to believe such a claim, however, a significantly larger part of her conscious rebutted that statement; it was only a matter of time before the innocent dragon changed her mind. Keeping her expression as nonchalant and unaffected as she possibly could, she offered a quick nod in response to express her thanks.

Raella did appreciate the casual comments as they leisurely strolled along the lonely forest route. Despite the saying "silence is better than mindless conversation", Raella appreciated the other's effort to keep her engaged. While it may seem insignificant, it definitely set her heart at ease and released any lingering tension in the atmosphere.

Upon hearing that Hwum too had recently transferred in, Raella visibly lightened up, her voice escaping in a slightly higher octave than before. "I've recently enrolled in starlight too! Around two months ago I suppose. However, I haven't met a dragon before! Speaking of which, are most dragons nocturnal?"

As she put more thought into it, Raella realized it was a really stupid question to ask. Had Hwum been less of a good-natured soul, she might have replied with sarcasm or even worse, disdain. However it was too late to take back her words, instead, she let out a nervous chuckle. "I mean um..." Averting her gaze, she sheepishly scratched the back of her head "It's just uh..."

Very smooth Raella, very smooth.

"I just didn't know dragons could be nocturnal!" she eventually blurted, more embarrassed at her stumble than proud of her conclusion.

Raella was a strange individual, her demeanor and emotions seemed to fluctuate quite a lot. There wasn't anything wrong with that though, or maybe the girl was just still in shock from the attack just now. But she said she'd been here many times before, hadn't she been attacked before?
Well, in any case, Hwum was glad to meet someone new to the island as well, and he turned her head to smile happily at Raella.
"Hopefully I made a good first impression. I'm not all that familiar with speaking to females of my age."
Hwum said with an embarrassed chuckle, still holding onto Raella's hand.

Hwum blinked few times, when Raella assumed she was nocturnal, and proceeded to smile a bit at the girl fumbling to find the right words. Hwum didn't comment before Raella got out what she wanted to say, and then she laughed heartily and smiled widely at Raella.
"I'm not nocturnal, though I get why you would think that, seeing as I'm here in the middle of the night. Or, well, I suppose I am nocturnal, but my species usually isn't. I'm just forced to live nocturnally."
Hwum ended her words with a shrug.
"You see, I can't see in light. Any kind of light. So the only time I can see well is at night, or in pitch black rooms during the day."
Hwum explained, she had explained her condition to multiple people already. It wasn't tiring yet, but she suspected in the future she'd just let people assume she was blind.
