She greeted him with a warm smile as he let her through the door. "Thank you," she said as she drifted over and perched on the stool she was directed to. Amelia loved the burst of smells that filled the store from the vials that lined the walls. Dr Pulfer returned from the back room and sat in front of her. From their first encounter, she got the impression that Dr Pulfer was not a man of small talk so it did not surprise her that the interview took off straight away. Not wanting to thank him again and sound like a broken record, Amelia simply replied to his praise with a small smile.

"Yes," she began as she combed her long hair back with her hand. "I spent one and a half years there. I mainly observed consultations and helped out in the medication dispensary. I also got to work on the reception so I have experience with dealing with customers in a professional environment." She had loved her time there and it had taught her a lot, only fueling her need to help others. Amelia tried to sound as though she was well learned, which in fact she was. "Sometimes I was allowed to carry out basic health checks but not without supervision." That was years past and now she knew a lot more than she did then. Whilst this new job did not offer consultations, it acted more like when she worked in the dispensary.

Nodding, Tommy made notes in his book. “So, you’d say you’re pretty familiar with asking medical related questions?” His expression remained neutral as he listened, giving nothing away. “Say, I’m a potential customer,” he said straightening his shoulders, “and I tell you I’ve been feeling sick, what would you ask me?” Tommy didn’t expect her to ask the questions that a doctor would, no that was far too advanced and it took a lot of training, practice, and experience. But a receptionist should be able to get the gist of where it hurt or what makes it worse or better to relay the best information along.

“What year are you in school now?” He asked, “And what biology courses have you taken, and with who? And follow up to those: why is it that you want to work in a hospital?”

The pressure built a bit as he asked his questions. What if she said the wrong thing? That could ruin her chances entirely. "Well, I'd ask for how long have you been feeling ill and whether you have actually been physically sick. I'd also ask if there were other symptoms that have accompanied the feeling, such as headaches or a fever. After finding out what they have been experiencing, it would summarize it back to them to ensure that I don't make any assumptions and then work out a diagnosis from the information." Amelia didn't want to go into too much detail in case what she was saying was not the answer he was looking for. After all, she would get better after more experience.

"I''m going into my third year of college now. I take a general biology degree but my work tends to centre more on immunology and physiology and Mr Evensman is my teacher." she explained, all the while keeping a polite and gentle tone of voice. "I've always been interested in the human body and being a doctor gives me the opportunity to improve the lives of others. I guess I just want to help people the best I can," she thought allowed. Amelia wanted to make a difference to the best of her ability and this was the best way she could think of within her own capabilities.

Tommy watched her thoughtfully and nodded along. Until the end. With a sharp shake of his head he corrected her. “You do not have the training to diagnose yet. That is something that takes years of schooling and training that you don’t have yet. It is dangerous to guess without the proper tools,” he said, “At this point, I will not have you do anything more than recommend. If someone has a cough give them the cough syrup, easy, but gather other information to make sure they get what they need. Anything more serious, you bring it to me.” He paused waiting for her to confirm her understanding. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust her abilities or judgements, but she simply didn’t have the skills yet. Not only that, but Tommy would be liable if she made a mistake, that was simply a safety net for himself and for her.

His expression relaxing a hair Tommy’s focus switched. “Evensman is good,” he commented thoughtfully. “Your background will be useful. We will start slow here at first, there is a lot of information to be gathered. I have no doubts, however, that you will rise to the challenge.” Finally, Tommy smiled. Pleased with her last answer. “How much experience do you have with plants? How about numbers?” He switched gears quickly. He’d already read her references and her resume and she had the knowledge and the drive to do the hard part. Now he wanted to know if she could balance it with the mundane shop life.

She had the confidence of the young and Tommy worried that could lead to trouble, but he remembered knocking heads with his father when he was a cocky apprentice. He also remembered screwing up and his father having to fish him out of trouble. He anticipated having to do that a bit with Amelia, but right now, she had a lot to learn.

Amelia nodded in understanding. She would definitely come to him if there was a situation where she was ill-equipped to deal with it. "Yes, I was never without supervision," she reminded him. Everything she did whilst interacting with the customer was done under the watchful eye of a member of staff. "I understand that that will not be part of my role here." She would feel terrible if whatever she prescribed had somehow done harm to the person and it would be something to avoid at all costs.

Once again, Amelia nodded along with what Dr Pulfer explained. "Plants in the sense of remedies and medicine: not so much. I have read up in books and on the internet, though I am not certain of the validity of what they say. I am, in fact, quite good with math so that side shouldn't be a problem." The things she needed to focus on learning were what each flora did to the human body and when best to use them. She imagined that may take a while to learn but she was willing to do it nonetheless. Besides, she had Dr Pulfer to guide her along the way.
