Warning: depictions of gore

Exercise: Certain tools leave distinctive impressions, as discussed in Module 3. Using the diagram, examine the crime scene and victim, and make inferences as to what tools could have made the following injuries. To be passed on Friday, class time.

Sometimes, Irina’s professor could actually keep up with her. Those classes were glorious. Maybe she shouldn’t have stayed out late at the morgue so that she could finish her assignment on time.

That would explain why Irina was hogging an empty classroom during break, a bit of chalk in her right hand and a pen in her left, scribbling down notes. Every once in a while, she would look up at the diagram and make small adjustments.

The diagram itself was drawn in unnecessarily accurate detail, barring the fact that it was all done in white chalk. It was the top view of what looked like a hotel room, with notes scribbled over several key points in the room. In the center was what looked like a disemboweled man, ropelike things poking out of what looked like a gash in the man’s abdomen.

Irina adjusted the edge of the wound with a few quick strokes of chalk and squinted at it. She lifted her pen to her eyes, in front of the blackboard, and lightly gestured with it, following the wound. She nodded to herself, having come to a conclusion, and scribbled furiously on her notes. It wasn’t part of the assignment, but she was having far too much fun to care. She probably wouldn’t even have noticed someone entering the room or watching her.

Aeon groaned as she peeked into another classroom and saw a group of friends sitting on tables and jovially laughing to each other over their lunches, crossing off another supposedly empty classroom off her list. She needed a place to stay and read and relax during the break, but it was always hard to find one during lunchtime because people wanted to goof off away from everyone. Every now and again she saw a small cluster of people with books pouring over them on a wiped-off desk.

For a moment she thought she could go inside and introduce herself and maybe join them--all she wanted was a nice, quite place to read--but then she remembered that she was a strange and awkward child and decided solidly against it and kept walking.

She glanced into another classroom and saw only a girl, drawing something that looked like a crime scene. As odd as it was, she was morbidly fascinated with the analyses she was doing. Before she could actually think about what she was doing, she was opening the door and slipping, closing it slowly and softly before creeping off to the side where she would have a good view of the board.

It occurred to her that sneaking in would be easier if she had used her invisibility power. Indulging in voyeurism was always easier when you could be assured that the person you were spying in on wouldn't be able to see you. But deep down, Aeon wanted to be seen. She wanted the girl making drawings on the board to cast a glance over her shoulders and see the unicorn sitting on a table, hands folded in her lap with a book about entomology beside her.

She wanted this other girl to turn to her and be interested in her. To think she was interesting.

Irina was still obsessing over her diagram, though at this point she had started working on a second page of notes. She still thought she was alone in the room as she read out the last parts of her notes.

"Minimal struggle, probably surprised and struck from behind, then stabbed in the middle with a pickaxe. But of course, would there have been some change to the chairs... hmm." Irina paced around for a few moments.

Without warning, she whirled around and hooked her foot around one of the chairs in the classroom. The chair toppled over, making a grating noise as it slid across the floor "Maybe for a larger man? ...Ah." She had finally spotted someone else in the classroom with her. She gave Aeon a catlike smile, tilting her head slightly to the side.

"Well, hello there. Catching up on homework as well, I presume?"

Aeon sat and watched her, her fingers running lightly over the cover of her book. She could have been reading it right now, amusing herself and not watching the other woman in the room with such creepy intent. And yet she couldn't tear her eyes away from the macabre scene she depicted upon the board at the front of the classroom.

Admittedly, the unicorn only had a cursory interest in these kinds of things. She found herself looking up blood splatter anaylsis and the best ways to dispose of bodies enough that the school webmaster had to pull her aside and ask if there was something she wanted to talk about/confess to. That investigation had been awkward, and she was sure if she had any semblance of a reputation that it would have been irreparably damaged.

"Hello," she said, softer than she intended to. "I--uh, yeah was walking, in the hall and I saw--"

The unicorn gestured to the board.

"What are you doing?"

Irina bent down to replace the beaten chair. "Homework. I left it a bit late, and it's due in only a few hours." The chair was righted with only a slight clatter. She went to pick up her notebook and pen, and wordlessly went to sit on top of a desk a few seats away from the other girl. She surveyed the diagram on the board mildly. Her right leg was swaying back and forth. After a few moments of silence, she spoke, not taking her eyes off the board.

Time to outclass this kid in the creep department. It was a bit childish, Irina knew, but she refused to be outcreeped. Besides, it would be fun to watch someone squirm.

"Does this interest you? Would you like to help me with something?"

Aeon nodded when she was asked if she was into this stuff. She was always into getting creeped or spooked out. It was one of the reasons she was so excited by the concept of Halloween. A whole day dedicated to scaring each other and being spooky. It was a nice idea, and something she wished unicorns did. Though, she also supposed that would not be in keeping with the "pure innocent" ideals that unicorns had.

When asked if it interested her, Aeon gave a stiff nod. "Yeah, I mean--" She rubbed the back of her neck. Was she seriously bonding with someone? Jackpot! "I like this kinda stuff... research it.... a lot."

She smiled. "I'd be happy to lend you a hand." The smile felt uncomfortable, and quickly deflated into a more neutral expression.
