There was no escaping the ocean.

That should have been obvious. Manta Carlos was an island, so by its very definition, the place was surrounded by the sea. But Lochlann thought that maybe, just maybe, things would be different here.

He grew up in the Atlantic, quite literally. He was used to the feel of sea spray. When they came inland and set up home in the river, it was like moving from the wide open plains of Montana to the hustle of New York. Now he was back in the ocean, but it was the wrong ocean. He wanted to feel homesick, but he didn't have a home to feel sick for.

Lochlann would normally sit on the most secluded part of the beach, somewhere he could disappear into the waves if he wanted to. But he wasn't. He was laying on his back, looking up at the sun, near the edge of a well-warn footpath. He'd borrowed a radio from the library and it sat behind him, making noise that was probably music. He didn't care. He liked it.

He laid in the sand, dozing, until he thought he heard footsteps on the path. He lifted up his head and said,

"Oh, it's you," but he wasn't sure if he was hallucinating. He'd been in the sun for a while, but Lochlann wasn't drinking.

Chloe's run had been going on for over a mile and she had only just started to break a sweat. She was enjoying the fact that she could leave campus virtually whenever she wanted – granted, as long as she stayed on this damn island. It was a lot more freedom than she used to have, at least. Plus, nobody wanted to kill her! There were definitely perks to this whole getting-summoned-to-another-reality thing.

Speaking of summoning... was that Loch? Chloe wasn’t expecting to see him here. If it wasn’t for his radio, she might have blown right past him without noticing. She slowed down as she got closer. Suddenly, she felt a little uncomfortable in her clothes - running shorts showed off a lot of leg.

“It is me,” she confirmed. Taking a few seconds to catch her breath, she walked closer and sat down next to him. “I’ve been hoping to run into you, actually. We haven't talked since..." since the night he accidentally tore her from her reality and expected to have drunken sex with her? "...yeah. Do you have a minute?"

“It is me,” she confirmed.

She sat down next to him and Loch made space as discretely as possible, trying to alleviate some of the awkwardness he was anticipating. He didn't really remember a lot of that night, except that he woke up the next morning on the floor with a hangover that hurt as much as his hand. Mostly, he thought he dreamed the whole thing.

He ran his hand through his hair. He was wearing his jeans with the pants cuffed on the bottom, exposing his ankles and bare feet, and he had a flannel on, but most of the top buttons were undone. He couldn't tell if he had too many or not enough clothes on for this situation. He was so close to the ocean, yet so very far from being in his element. He turned the radio down and glanced over at her, his hand still in his hair, holding his head up lazily.

“I’ve been hoping to run into you, actually. We haven't talked since.....yeah. Do you have a minute?"

He lifted an eyebrow and looked around, giving a slight wave of his hand as if to say, Do I look Busy to you? Because, of course, he wasn't.

"Chloe," he said, uncertainty tinging his voice like an accent. "...right?"

He swallowed. He sort of wished he was drunk, but the only thing in his bag was water. He reached behind him and grabbed the bottle, which had started to warm in the sun, and held it out to her.

"It's not, um, anything," he said, the stammer surprising him. Quickly, he added, "Not that it would be anything, but...it's just that, well, it's hot out."

very smooth, he thought to himself. At least he wasn't staring at her chest.

Chloe nodded. “Yes. And you’re Loch. I almost thought you wouldn’t remember.”

He offered water, and she was happy to accept it. Running made her thirsty. She unscrewed the lid and poured some into her mouth, making sure that her lips didn’t touch the bottle. “Thanks.” She handed it back to him and tried not to think about what else that might have looked like.

“So, uh… first things first.” She thought that he deserved to know what he did. “Whatever you did, Aurora doesn’t think she can reverse-engineer it without accidentally killing me. So I’m pretty much stuck here forever, in a different universe from everyone I know. Just in time for the holidays, too.” Her voice rose a little near the end of that. She sighed, then chuckled to herself: did she even care about thanksgiving before this year? She might have even hated it.

“So in a way I guess you screwed me, but not the way you were planning to.” She shrugged. “Bright side though, you might have also saved me from being a genocide victim. So… there’s that, I guess.”

“Yes. And you’re Loch. I almost thought you wouldn’t remember.”

"I sort of thought it was a dream," Loch admitted. He squinted at her. "Hey, you could be sunstroke for all know."

It was a lame attempt at a joke and he didn't expect her to laugh, but he tried anyway.

"Well, fuck," Lochlann said.

“So in a way I guess you screwed me, but not the way you were planning to.” She shrugged. “Bright side though, you might have also saved me from being a genocide victim. So… there’s that, I guess.”

He groaned and flopped back in the sand, rubbing his face with his hands. He didn't really remember a lot about that night, or what possessed him to think summoning a succubus was a good idea to begin with. Of course, Lochlann wasn't hungry right now, so that probably had something to do with it.

"Aurora can't figure anything out? Isn't she supposed to be like, I don't know..some kind of.." he couldn't figure out the word, so he just gave up. His voice was distraught and muffled by his hands. "I was drunk. I had no idea what I was doing. It shouldn't be that hard to fix."

He was quiet for a long moment, but finally he said, "I'm sorry."

The radio cut to a commercial behind them, the voice coming out in quick, rapid-fire spanish, before cutting back to music again.

“It’s okay,” Chloe sighed. “I’m not mad. I mean… okay, I am mad. But, not at you specifically.” That might not have made him feel any better.

“Anyway, uh… that’s not why I wanted to talk to you.”

Chloe shifted uncomfortably. This was going to be a really weird conversation, but it was something she needed to get straightened out soon. “That spell might not have been too far off. Thinking I was a succubus, or whatever. I do have…” She fished for a non-creepy way to put it. “Needs, that most people don’t have, which might give people an idea like that. Do you remember that… thing I did to you?”

She really hoped nobody else was around to overhear them.

“It’s okay,” Chloe sighed. “I’m not mad. I mean… okay, I am mad. But, not at you specifically.”

Loch was silent for a moment and when he did speak, it was still through the hands that covered his face. "I wish you were mad at me, because I could let you beat me up and it might make us both feel a little bit better."

He sat up again, resting his elbows on his knees. He angled his head towards her, but dropped his gaze when she continued.

“Anyway, uh… that’s not why I wanted to talk to you.”

He reached out to brush some sand off his feet, his arm grazing against hers for a moment and Loch's breath caught in his throat. He wasn't hungry, not yet, but the predatory part of him was always awake. He pulled his arm back close to his side.

“That spell might not have been too far off. Thinking I was a succubus, or whatever. I do have…Needs, that most people don’t have, which might give people an idea like that. Do you remember that… thing I did to you?”

Lochlann wrinkled his brow in though and started to frown. A minute passed and his frown only deepened.

"I remember bleeding, and I remember...fuck, I think I...did I show you mine?"

Lochlann didn't know the double entendre that question had. He wanted to know if he really showed her what he was, his horse-shape. He had a bad feeling that he did. He wracked his brain for memories of that night, ringing his thoughts like a wet towel and trying to squeeze every last cognizant thing out.

"....did we...kiss?" Lochlann said, frowning again. He usually remembered kisses, but he wasn't certain. "Uh. I mean. I remember..something, I think, but I don't think we kissed, but I don't know."

He shrugged rather sheepishly. "I'm really sorry. I uh, I drank too much."

“Your…?” was he talking about his penis? “I don’t think you showed me your, uh… I mean, I know you can turn into a horse. Or maybe you’re a horse who can turn into a guy. So I would imagine, uh…” Her face was turning red. She didn’t want to go there. She was vomiting words and she needed to stop. “I didn’t see your thing, though.” Chloe finished quickly. She still failed to see why turning into a horse was a big deal, but exposing oneself was a different story.

“We didn’t kiss. I did feed on you, though.” Chloe immediately regretted saying it that way. “I mean, I just drained your strength. I didn’t do anything weird to you. I mean… it is weird. But not that kind of weird. You know?”

Chloe remembered that Loch was drunk. She didn’t expect him to remember much, especially not something this subtle. But she also really hated explaining this ability of hers. Or her cravings.

Loch groaned and covered his face again, but he didn't collapse back into the sand. "Shit. I'm really sorry. I don't usually show girls either of those things, especially not when we've just met. "

He dropped his hands, resting his elbows on his knees again and said, "Is...that why it felt so good when you touched me?"

He was looking over at the ocean as he said this, feeling his heart beat rise and fall with the tide. He didn't seem to realize any awkwardness could come from this conversation, because as far as he was concerned, she wasn't dead. That was more than he could ask for after seeing a hot girl, turning into a horse and then feeling really good.

((ooc: it's a short post for me but I'll have him respond with something more next one.))

“Don’t worry about it,” she tried to reassure him. “I know… I mean, I knew plenty of people who can shapeshift, and it doesn’t bother me. And you managed to keep it in your pants, so that part’s not a problem either.” This conversation was getting painfully awkward. It was bad enough that she was about to ask what she was.

Pleasant surprise – Loch made the connection between the draining and that good feeling. “…Yes, actually. That’s exactly why it felt so good.” She was glad that she didn’t have to explain that part to him. That part was almost as awkward as the penis-related part of this conversation. “Another weird thing about that power is, I… have to use it on people, periodically. Or I get really sick. I might even die.” Chloe didn’t know if it would kill her, but she wasn’t interested in finding out.

She shifted uncomfortably, averted her gaze from him. “So… that brings me to the real reason for wanting to talk to you. You already knew about my… feeding thing. Kind of. And I don’t like letting a lot of people know that I can do that. Or that I need to do it. But I still need to do it. So…”

Chloe sighed and turned to him, watching his face closely for a reaction. “Would you let me do that to you, every once in a while?” It had made a lot of sense to ask Loch, when she was thinking about it in her head, but now she was already starting to question her decision. This was the guy who had the brilliant idea to get drunk and summon a succubus, after all.
