Olwen's face lit up as a thrilled grin bloomed over her face. "Almost! Sorry, that might have been my bad, I wasn't too clear. Let's try again!" she urged giddily.

She sat back comfortably against the bench. She took a little longer to focus on the clarity of the words, even closing her own eyes as well.

"What's your favourite class?" she asked again. The words were spoken more slowly this time, and she put a lot of effort in sending the words out. It was almost a little dizzying how hard she tried.

"Okay okay." Carmin closed his eyes once more, awaiting another stray thought. This time he focused on lemons, a very random thing to focus on, but he felt it made things easier. If all he was thinking about was that sour yellow fruit, then he would have an easier time picking out a thought that wasn't his.

Lemons, lemons, lemons... Out of the blue, the words formed in his head. What's... your... favourite... class?

This must've been the same message as before, but this time it came in much clearer. Feeling much more confident about this time, Carmin didn't even repeat the phrase, instead answering the question.

"My favourite class is english." His mouth was nearly in a smile, as a feeling of accomplishment washed over him.

The dryad squealed and clapped her hands happily. "Yayy! It works!" she exclaimed. "Oh, how fun!"

A vague sense of joy would flutter to the boy's mind. Now knowing he could hear, the dryad somewhat unintentionally let out a feeling rather than a thought. Whether or not he'd catch it, she didn't even think of.

"Alright, alright. Now. Do you think we should try exchanging? It's not too too tricky, I don't think. Maybe just... picture the words in your mind. Hear them yourself, then picture them leaving your head and going where you want them to. That's...sort of what I do," she attempted to explain. She wasn't very confident in her instruction, but was smiling nonetheless.

"It's easy," she added telepathically, thinking that might help.

Carmin felt slightly happier as a result of the feelings sent his way, but didn't notice it or link that feeling back to Olwen.

Upon hearing the suggestion that they attempt going the other way, Carmin had mixed feelings. He did want to try it, but wasn't confident in his ability to do so. Olwen's instructions didn't help much either. It probably made sense to someone who could do it, but for him the explanation didn't feel all that helpful.

With the negative thoughts simmering in his mind, it was easy to notice when Olwen pushed him the words. It's easy. He still didn't know about that, but either way it was at least worth a shot he supposed. Besides, if a dumb old tree could figure it out then he certainly should be able.

He stared intently at Olwen and thought about the word lemon over and over. He pictured the thoughts moving to her, but it certainly didn't feel like it was working. It felt more like he was standing there looking lika an idiot with lemon lemon lemon lemon repeatedly going through his mind.

Olwen watched him with the same encouraging smile. But she continued to sit quietly as the boy tried and tried, until her brows slowly tilted into a sympathetic expression. She shook her head.

"Maybe... I'm not as good a teacher as I hoped..." she said finally. She pat the bench beside her and picked up her fork again. "Let's take a break for now, perhaps. I feel like I'm going to give you a headache at this rate," she jested gently.

Carmin relentlessly kept trying to shove lemons into Olwen's mind, but it wasn't looking good. Finally, she decided to call it quits for the time being. He wanted to keep going until he got it, but he wasn't sure exactly what he'd do differently and Olwen still needed to eat, so he decided to agree with taking a break.

"That's alright, I imagine this isn't the easiest thing to teach." Carmin pulled himself up onto the bench again, taking a seat and popping open his water bottle. He took a sip, then wiped his mouth with his arm. "Who knows, maybe I just can't do it. I am a little different from normal plants." His negative attitude started to shine through. "And don't worry about me, I don't think I can even get a headache."

The dryad shrugged lightly. "Perhaps. I think I'll take some time to look into it, though. Perhaps there's something I missed in explaining," she pointed out, countering his negative comment with a positive one.

"I have been doing this since I was little, so it's something that's tricky for me to think critically about.

"We did still discover something fun, though!" she added brightly. Once more, a faint, flutterly feeling of joy emanated from the Dryad.

"I do regret embarrassing you earlier... But I'm a little glad that I tested this on you." She winked cheekily.

Carmin felt a little more hopeful at Olwen's response. It made sense that it was difficult to explain. How the power worked seemed to be pretty mysterious, and then she had just learned it naturally long ago. How was she even going to teach him something when that's how it was? He still wasn't sure it was possible, but if she still thought it could happen, then he decided not to give up.

The mention of how they had at least learned the trick one way seemed to brighten the atmosphere. He nearly smirked again when Olwen winked at him. He huffed. "Yeah, but don't ever do that again, okay. At least not like that." He wasn't really angry, just kind of jokingly so.

Olwen lifted a hand to her mouth to stop herself from snickering.

"Alright, alright..." she agreed, feigning an exaggerated reluctance. "I'll let you study in peace next time. But only if we can practice again soon!"

Despite meeting just barely an hour ago, the two seemed to get along nicely. The dryad certainly seemed comfortable as she smiled at him. But just as she adjusted her lunch box on her lap once again, the school bell resounded over the courtyard, as if triggered by her stabbing the hunk of potato she had halfway lifted to her mouth. She glanced to Carmin, looking disappointed as their time came to an end.

"Boo... I guess I'll have to– Wait, no, that's silly. Here!"

She flipped open one of her notebooks and carefully tugged free a page from the back. She scribbled something down towards the center before holding it out to the plant boy.

"You can call whenever you'd like if you decide you want to practice some more. Have a nice period, Carmin!" she bid him as she stood.

On the slip of paper was her phone number and the name to which it belonged. It was punctuated with a small doodle of a flower.

The dryad waved, and began off in the direction of the sports field, hoping she'd see him again soon.

"Fine, that sounds like a fair deal." Carmin was much more content with that than he sounded. Olwen seemed like a fun person to hang around with, and he desperately needed more of those. This would make for a good excuse to do just that.

The sound of the bell brought with it a feeling of disappointment. Usually he didn't mind the sound, but this time he was actually doing something during his break. He frowned at the noise, but changed his expression to curiosity as Olwen created a note for him.

Seeing that it was a number was a pleasant surprise, and when told to call her to practice again, he gave a firm nod and responded with "For sure."

He waved back as she left, and started making his way to a class of his own.
