"Oh-ho! Tone isn't all that difficult," Myst replied with excitement.

Sela nodded timidly in agreement. "I can keep it short, I think. I'm not a teacher. I think teaching would get boring after a while," they stated plainly. It was already stressful to be responsible for the accuracy of the knowledge they imparted to Gray. Either that stress would wear off and be replaced by boredom or become stronger.

"School taught me that there's a lot of way to express tone. The pitch of your voice, speed, and words can express different emotions. Like... Like..." They went quiet for a few seconds, then made their voices higher pitches and spoke quickly, "If I speak like this then I sound more panicky and nervous and confused which isn't helped by me not pausing."

When they stopped to see if that lesson registered in Gray, Myst tried to calm their fears by giving them a telepathic, Good work.

Gray nodded as the multitude of voices surrounded him, burying into his mind. He hadn't really heard some panic before, not when his creator and 214 had always been so in control of everything around them and were perfectly calm. The difference in their voices was a drastic change from their more relaxed way of speaking, so he picked up on it quickly. He didn't have hopes that he could replicate the same tone, as even he was beginning to realize that his voice wasn't very. . .distinct.
Normally, it didn't bother him. But the longer he was around different people, the more he was noticing that he didn't sound all that human. Humans--and a lot of the other beings at the school--all had emotions, but for the most part, he lacked them; and that was coming across in his voice. It was just another thing that made him stand out as not human; or even living.
But he was alive. Even if he wasn't completely human, he was alive; and people needed to know this. His creator needed to know this.
"I do not think you're boring, Sela," he noted. "You're teaching me things I want to learn, and you are doing it in a way that makes it simple for me to understand."
As for trying to mimic them? Well, he didn't panic, so he didn't need to learn how to mimic that one. But actually learning tone was easy, like he had thought and just as Myst confirmed; they'd be done in no time.
"Can we move on?" he asked.

Sela watched Gray with a blank expression despite being confused. What made him feel the need to tell them they weren't boring? And then... it dawned on them. "I think teaching you, or anyone, would get boring for me after a while," they clarified.

"Perfect example!" Myst jumped in. "The word choice there came off way meaner than Sela intended. It makes them sound like they're disinterested when they aren't." He didn't acknowledge the grimace on Sela's face. They weren't angry, for the moment. Only embarrassed.

"I didn't... I didn't mean to sound disinterested or mean. I was only explaining what I actually meant... I should have said thank you. To show my appreciation to your compliment."

Gray watched with no reaction as Sela tried to explain themself and Myst made his own lesson between it. He didn't see Sela's tone as mean, he had been brushed off by his creator enough to ignore any particularly harsh word choice. So with Sela, it couldn't bother him less. But he did also mind Myst's addition. He blinked when Sela backtracked, his expression neutral. They didn't do anything wrong in his mind.
It was best to stop them now.

"I understood what you meant, Sela. I am not offended by your comment," he stated. "I am okay if you don't find me interesting to teach. But I am happy that you enjoy my 'compliment.'"
He didn't mean to make that last part sound any particular way, he just wasn't 100% sure what a compliment was. It seemed to be just about any positive comment, but seeing how poorly he had articulated himself in the past, he wasn't sure he could manage that without fumbling somewhere in the process. He was going to have study more about word choice when he had time later. He knew lots of words, but the connotations and structuring had always left him; he typically chose to ignore the harsh parts of conversations and just followed the general message.
He blinked, then shook his head.
"Would you like to continue now?" he asked, looking up at Sela. "Now that we have been more clear with one another."

There was something to laugh about regarding the idea of Sela teaching Gray tone, when they themself were having trouble understanding his own. The only one laughing was Myst. It was all in Sela's head, and neither Sela nor Jao were enjoying it.

"Alright... I'll continue. Um, something I picked up on is politeness in every day conversation... People tend to shorten their words with contractions to sound less formal. Um, contractions are words like 'can not' being turned into 'can't.' Or 'let us' into 'let's...' They speak with a calm but pleasant tone too." To demonstrate, Sela raised the pitch of their voices to have a subtle bounciness. To emphasize the effect, they straightened their back, widened their eyes, and faced Gray directly. "They sound interested when speaking. It's important to sound interested so your conversational partner feels appreciated."

When they finished, they returned to having their usual drowsy expression and slow speech. "It's tiring... Everything goes too fast..."
