"Oh, um, I don't mind help. I'll help you too. If you want." Though they weren't sure what work Gray had, Sela was fairly confident that Myst and Jao could figure it out.

Sela slid the paper detailing their assignment towards Gray when they tried to read it. The explanations were actually quite complicated. While the idea of learning social behavior might seem simplistic, their assignment went deep into the subject. Keywords explained what empathy, emotional intelligence, apathy, mental disability, regression, and some other words regarding psychology. Sela had to write short paragraphs in response to prompts about social situations they might come across.

"I'm not," they replied when asked about their grade. "I tested out of base courses. My classes are focused on catching me up on social rules and developing my emotional intelligence."

So Sela wasn't in the 11th grade; in fact, they weren't in any grade he knew of. Instead of the things he had to do, Sela was doing alternative assignments. No wonder he didn't recognize it.
Even more, they were doing classes for social and emotional intelligence; something that his creator often noted he lacked. And while she had sat him down to try and teach him basic manners, not all of them translated outside of her lab. Alongside some other things, she was using this experience to try and teach him how to function in society; so it wouldn't kill him to learn with them. He leaned slightly closer, shoulders loose and by his sides.
"That's very interesting, Sela," he stated. "Maybe I should join your class."
Then he paused, his eyes on the ceiling. Then they went back to Sela.
"I would like your help," Gray noted. He went back into his seat yet again, pulling out a new notebook. "Tell me how to be more emotional."
Then when he was finished, he could finish his work and leave. And if Sela needed it, and he was actually able to help, he could offer them some assistance. Maybe they could even do it again if they still needed each others help.

Both Jao and Myst started laughing when Gray asked Sela for help. It almost sounded like a laugh track with a mix of women and men of all kinds laughing. Jao stopped first and quicky, embarrassed of her outburst. Myst kept on giggling until Jao nudged against him with her body.

Sela frowned, somewhat embarrassed. "A-Ah. Um. I don't think I can teach you that. If I knew how I wouldn't be taking this class. I think. This class isn't about teaching me to be more emotional. It's teaching me how to understand people's emotions and the nuances of conversations. But, uh, I'm sure you could sign up if you wanted. And I don't mind studying with you."

Well, that would give him the same exact result, just in a different way than he had been preparing for. But he didn't like that Myst and the other creature had laughed like that. It wasn't the point that he felt like he was surrounded by a variety of laughs; it was the fact that they were laughing in general. What was so funny about his question?
At least Sela had an answer.
Gray nodded, then put away his notebook. It was odd that Sela needed to attend that class; they were more emotional than him, and they were the one carrying this conversation. As far as he was aware, Sela was social, and good at it.
"I think you're a good student," Gray noted. He pointed to himself. "My creat-"
How many times did he have to nail it in his head that it was Dr. Michaelis now? He really was bad at being social.
He shook his head, starting over with, "I think you're a good student, Dr. Michaelis says I'm not very good at being around others. I would like to study with you so I can be a better student."
If Myst and the other one found that funny again, well, so be it. If they were laughing, then at least he was funny.
He didn't want to be funny though, he was being completely serious.

Sela was happy that Jao and Myst's laughter was ignored. The two were an immense help, but times like these made them feel annoying. They picked up on that and gave Gray separate apologies.

"Uh, I'm sorry for them too," they started off with, choosing to ignore Gray's slip-up. For now. "A-And, um, thank you..." A smile replaced their frown. "What kind of help do you need? Um, actually, Myst is really good at social stuff. He can see language. He likes talking to people too. He's the one who helps me with social stuff."

Well that was a good question; what did he need help with? In honesty, it was everything about social interaction. But Sela's offer was a bit more specific, not to mention more helpful. Gray nodded.
"I would like help with 'social stuff'," he stated. "Dr. Michaelis would like for me to make friends. She would also like it if I could learn how to be more human."
Gray observed Sela for a moment.
"You are not human, however," he noted. Then he set his hands in his lap, leaning in again. "It is interesting to me that you are capable of acting like one. So I would like if Myst could teach me too."
Sela was a strange being, and so were Jao and his counterpart. The concept of 'seeing language' was even stranger, but it fit them all. He was different too, and his creator had said that his abilities fit him, too. So, maybe Sela wasn't the biggest oddity he could have met; they fit together perfectly well, and as far a he was concerned, they were perfect. Well, they were better than him, anyway.
And he wanted to be better.

If Gray didn't point it out, Sela would have. They were very, very far from human.

However, Myst also pointed out, "Uh, I'm not human either?"

"Neither am I," Jao continued.

Sela looked down at the two, considering their options. They wanted to help Gray, but how could they help someone be human when none of them were human? They looked back up at Gray with a sheepish expression. "I don't act human... I think. I don't want to be human either. But I pretend. For the school. So I don't get hurt."

Picking up Sela's discomfort, Myst sighed. "Yeah, I'll help. I can act human pretty well. It's kinda hard to define the rules of them though. That's kind of the whole appeal of humans."

Well of course Myst and the other one weren't human either; it was just impressive any of them could act even somewhat human.
"I am aware none of you are human," Gray noted. "I did not mean to target my comment only to Sela."
They held back on another comment when Sela spoke again, expanding on the situation. In honesty, he didn't care about their own goals; they were much more focused on why they would get hurt, and why they would rather pretend. Would someone really hurt Sela if they weren't human enough? Couldn't they protect themself? Gray looked down at his notebook.
Who would do something like that? Even his creator just tossed around threats, she had never hurt him.
Gray was still staring down at his notebook when Myst spoke. When he finally looked up, he kept his attention on Myst, pushing previous thoughts away.
"I do not mind if it is difficult," he stated. "I just want to learn."

Sela leaned over to get a look at the notebook Gray was so interested in. All the while, Myst hesitated as he tried to think of how to do things.

"You shouldn't have agreed," Jao chimed in. Looking towards Gray, "He's not a teacher. It's not like he has a course all set up for you or whatever. Go find an ac—"

She was cut off by Myst. "Let's do this for Sela." That seemed to keep her from making another argument. He also looked up at Gray. "Okay, so, we gotta be more specific, yeah?" He looked up at Sela, who looked away from Gray's notebook and nodded.

"Um... What do you need help with specifically? What do you want to work on first? At school... we learned how to recognize facial expressions, changes in tone... social etiquette on the island. That last one's complicated. Too many cultures... We learned about a lot."

Well, now that Myst was asking, it was harder to pinpoint what he did and didn't need for the time being. When Sela asked too, he was still struggling to come up with an answer. He already understood facial expressions; his creator and 214 provided him with more than enough to work with. But between etiquette and picking up changes in tone, well, he knew some of it, but not enough to not cause a mess.
"I want to learn more about changes in tone," he said. Maybe if he learned more, less people would get mad at him, and he could keep making friends. "Social etiquette will take too long."
That was a fairly definitive statement; all assuming that Sela would be unable to get their thoughts together enough to explain it all. Myst would likely help them, but that was exactly the reason why it would take so long. He still had things to do, and he wasn't planning to waste it on conversations that could easily be cut short.
He had no strong opinions on Sela other than a slight admiration, but he didn't want to talk with them for hours.
So it was probably best to articulate that.
"I would like it if you kept this short as well," he noted. "I still have to finish my work."
