The Starlight Academy library was a boon for any scholar in pursuit of knowledge. The multistory building was packed wall to wall with books on not only the usual texts on philosophy, history and other banal subjects, but also those of a more esoteric subjects such as the ever popular multidimensional theology. Regardless of what you were looking for, the library had everything you could want to know about the subject on hand at any hour.
“What do you mean you don't have it?” A shrill annoyed voice echoed throughout the hall. “If you don't have it I can't pass my class and it will be all your fault! Don't you know who I am?” Murphy sighed from behind the counter as the woman's voice continued to rise. “I am a very important person, my father is one of the founders of the school. So go get my book!” She stood there with her arms crossed glaring at him.
“Ma'am, I've told you that I can't just 'find' a book that we don't have at the moment. Someone else already checked it out and it should be back in two weeks. If you like I can-” he rubbed his eyes tiredly as she launched into a new tirade of unreasonable demands. Already he regretted accepting the librarian's request for assistance as her aide was on vacation. He'd expecting things to be relatively quiet considering it was a library, but since he'd started it had been nothing but complaints and demands from self important high school students claiming that they could get him fired or that their parents could get him expelled.
Murphy pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to keep a hold of his temper. “Look, miss this is a library, you can either lower your voice and listen to the options I can offer or I can call security to throw you out of the building and put a mark on your record, which I might add, may affect your future at the academy.”
None of it was true of course. The library didn't have security to speak of, and he certainly didn't have the authority to affect her record, but it did the job of getting her to shut up and storm away without further argument. Well, that could have gone better. He took a breath before managing a tired smile to the next person in line, "Hi, how can I help you?"
