An Abjuration of Conjuration

The Starlight Academy library was a boon for any scholar in pursuit of knowledge. The multistory building was packed wall to wall with books on not only the usual texts on philosophy, history and other banal subjects, but also those of a more esoteric subjects such as the ever popular multidimensional theology. Regardless of what you were looking for, the library had everything you could want to know about the subject on hand at any hour.

“What do you mean you don't have it?” A shrill annoyed voice echoed throughout the hall. “If you don't have it I can't pass my class and it will be all your fault! Don't you know who I am?” Murphy sighed from behind the counter as the woman's voice continued to rise. “I am a very important person, my father is one of the founders of the school. So go get my book!” She stood there with her arms crossed glaring at him.

“Ma'am, I've told you that I can't just 'find' a book that we don't have at the moment. Someone else already checked it out and it should be back in two weeks. If you like I can-” he rubbed his eyes tiredly as she launched into a new tirade of unreasonable demands. Already he regretted accepting the librarian's request for assistance as her aide was on vacation. He'd expecting things to be relatively quiet considering it was a library, but since he'd started it had been nothing but complaints and demands from self important high school students claiming that they could get him fired or that their parents could get him expelled.

Murphy pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to keep a hold of his temper. “Look, miss this is a library, you can either lower your voice and listen to the options I can offer or I can call security to throw you out of the building and put a mark on your record, which I might add, may affect your future at the academy.”

None of it was true of course. The library didn't have security to speak of, and he certainly didn't have the authority to affect her record, but it did the job of getting her to shut up and storm away without further argument. Well, that could have gone better. He took a breath before managing a tired smile to the next person in line, "Hi, how can I help you?"

Enelen looked a whole lot like a deer in the headlights, standing behind the raging woman. At one point he'd even considered interjecting, but as her threats had gotten more and more elaborate - she was going to have the guy fired, she was going to have him expelled - he'd decided to stay right out of it. He stayed where he was behind the woman, thin hands holding tightly to the messenger bag held in front of his body.

It wasn't until she was gone and totally out of sight that he stepped up to the counter, clearing his throat. He was awkward. Good and awkward. And the reason why he was awkward was quickly revealed when he reached into his bag and pulled out the very book the woman had been demanding.

He'd had no idea it was being used for any class - he'd been checking books out more or less at random and reading them without a care in the world. He really hadn't intended to mess with anyone's education, and he looked rather bashful as he set the book down on the counter.

"I was... hoping to return this and get the author's next book?" He said, his voice very, very quiet.

Murphy looked at the meek young man before him, glancing first at him, then the staff he carried and finally to the book he set on the counter before bursting into laughter that echoed and bounced around the large hall, getting him several dirty looks and 'SHH' from a few patrons. After a few moments he managed to stifle it long enough to gasp out, "Of...of course sir. One sec...hee, good timing."

Eventually he coughed and regained his composure. "Sorry about that, its just been a long day and I needed that, thank you." His fingers flew over the keyboard, pulling up lists of books by the author. "Er, looks like his next book is checked out as well actually. Any particular subject you're interested in? I might be able to find something for you."

Despite his best attempts he kept glancing at the staff curiously. Sure it COULD be a regular walking stick, but on an island where magic, mad science and gods coexisted and intermingled he doubted it. "I think we've got some tomes on magical theory if you'd like, or are ya looking for something a little lighter?"

Enelen flinched when the man started laughing, quickly glancing around to make sure the woman hadn't noticed. It didn't seem that she had - or if she had, she was safely out of sight from where Enelen was. He was very, very worried she was going to suddenly come back, and he hurriedly nudged the book across the counter, hoping that if she did, she'd just blame the librarian and not realize he'd been holding it directly behind her in line or anything.

Of course, Karma was nothing but cruel. The next book was out, and Enelen frowned. He was going to have to figure out how to avoid this in the future. Maybe he'd start converting the books over? Only the library might not like that. His face twisted slightly into a grimace, before he resolved himself to just ask.

"Actually, rather than tomes, does the library have any policies on copying books?" Well, perhaps not literally copying, but it seemed like it would be better to be vague to start, and figure things out from there.

Murphy cocked an eyebrow, "Like, photocopying? I mean as long as you're not looking to actually sell the books I'm fairly certain its alright."

He clicked about on the simple computer in front of him, pulling up library protocol and was mildly surprised to find a little footnote of information on the question.

"Yeah, looks like you can as long as they are not actively dangerous books like aforementioned tomes. Looks like there's a couple of other books that aren't allowed to be copied but unless you're looking for some really restricted reading you're good to go. What kind of book are ya looking for?"

Enelen didn't know what photocopying was, but the name made it kind of self explanatory... sort of. He got 'copying', but what did photos have to do with it? His face scrunched with confusion, and he was relieved when the librarian clarified... more or less.

"Uhm, all of them." He confessed. He liked the idea of books, and the idea of libraries, but the nitty gritty fundamentals just didn't do it for him. The idea of coming in to pick up a book and having to wait weeks because people were slow readers. The ideas of books coming to him with scribbles or missing pages. No, better to make copies of literally everything, and be able to call them up when needed. Once a book had been copied into his own book, it was at his fingers forever, even if the source book was destroyed or damaged.

"Basically I have a magic book and it'll let me copy the book over if I use a little spell, and it won't damage the base book at all, but I'm not sure if there's something else going on since I'm not used to the library." The last thing he wanted was to accidentally disrupt whatever magic the library might have.

A magic book that let you copy others, well that certainly sounded useful. At least it would have been if Murphy didn't have an intense distrust of magic itself. Not that it was evil or corrupting by any means, he just didn't really care for things that he couldn't understand how they worked. Granted, now that he lived on an island where things like literal gods and mages were around he'd adapted somewhat.

"I see. Well how fast does it work? If it's just a quick spell I can give you an isolated quiet room and just bring you a few stacks of books at a time to expedite the process. We've got..." he typed a few more times on the computer and raised an eyebrow, "about 40 million books on our shelves. Any idea where you'd like to start?"

Enelen would have been horrified by the idea of someone disliking magic. To him, magic was everything. The idea of life without magic would be like saying life without words or life without air. It was probably for the best that Murphy didn't mention it, because if he had, Enelen would have talked his ear off.

"Instantly, more or less. I draw a circle around the book with the tip of my finger to help me focus, cast the spell, and then tapping the book with my staff finishes it." He didn't even need his own book handy to do it - it just automatically worked. He actually wasn't even entirely sure how it worked, but he suspected it had to do with his staff, and that his own read-everything book wouldn't work at all without it.

Not that he ever went anywhere without it. He wouldn't be caught dead without his staff in his hand.

His eyes went rather wide at the mention of forty million books, his mouth forming a tiny little 'o' that he took a moment to recover from.

"I guess... uhm... general studies? Like, general overviews would be the best place for me to start." There was no point in having detailed advanced books on subjects he knew literally nothing about. Better to start with the base and work his way up.

Murphy waited a bit when the man left his interest at general studies, waiting for something a bit more specific. When it was obvious no further elaboration was forthcoming he looked back up from the computer screen. "Anything in particular? I mean 'general studies' is a bit of a broad spectrum."

It occurred to him that the guy might not even be from this world, or even this dimension which would certainly explain why he didn't know where to start. "If you're looking for general knowledge might I suggest history? That should get you a general overview of things and help you figure out what might interest you next. Oh, and I should probably get your library card Mr...?"

He just wanted general, and he looked slightly distressed when he discovered he couldn't explain it properly. He just wanted... everything. He wanted to know everything, and it seemed impossible to find a place that he could actually start with.

At the very least, the librarian seemed to mostly figure it out, and he let out a small sigh of relief. "A general history book would probably be helpful. I just need... I don't know, has anyone written a book of 'the basics of this world for idiots'?" If not, someone should. The only reason his world didn't have that sort of book was because they'd never had any outside visitors. "And I do need a library card, I think. That lets me gets books out, right?" He'd completely missed the queue for his name.
