Carmin let out a tiny sigh. “It’s fine, I don’t mind. And no, I haven’t really tried anything fancy with the roots. As far as I can tell, they’re just ordinary roots. Haven’t really explored how deep they go because they retract if they aren’t exposed to dirt or if I tug them by mistake. I haven’t really tried um, connecting them to plant life before either, but I do think any of those things wouldn’t be likely.”

“It’s okay. I know most people on this island seem to develop cool powers, but I don’t really see that being a thing for me. I’m not like you, unfortunately.” Carmin shrugged. It was whatever he supposed.

Gabe blinked, then frowned. This wasn't how he had wanted the conversation to go. He was hoping the two would have a bonding experience, maybe? That's how you got closer as friends, right? Although that seemed closer to those cheesy teen movies than anything realistic, though. Why couldn't the movies have actual relatable stories that teach good life lessons?

Probably because they wouldn't be very entertaining, his brain responded and he gave a small sigh. "Sorry, Carmin. I'm probably overstepping and being all excited when you probably know yourself way better than I do. I just... kinda hoped it'd be another thing we have in common. And then it'd be like an easier way to be friends or something, I don't know. I'm not exactly person of the year when it comes to making friendships. I just end up stumbling into them a majority of the time." He let out a laugh before coming around the counter and standing near Carmin.

"But... I won't push on the power thing any more. Unless you ask about it. I know some people can be sensitive about that stuff." He paused for a moment as his face shifted into a faint grin. "Also, thank the gods you aren't like me. My life feels like a mess all the time."

Carmin shook his head. “There’s no need to apologize. It’s fine, really. You didn’t do anything wrong.” As for knowing himself better than Gabe did, that was questionable. He’d been like that for six and a half years, but he didn’t know how to deal with the leaf issue Gabe had solved and he still didn’t completely understand what happened when the flower on his head was removed.

“You’re a fine friend Gabe, we don’t have to have similar powers or anything for that, we can still be friends and we still have other stuff in common.”

As Gabe grinned about calling his life a mess, Carmin remained pretty serious. “I think everyone’s lives are messes. Well, most people at least. But look on the bright side, you got this cool flower shop and you got Yuki to hold your hand through it all.”

Gabe laughed and leaned against the counter. His hand slid into his jean pockets. He didn't really know what else to do with them and was beginning to feel embarrassed at being called a good friend. He didn't feel like much of a good friend most of the time. But maybe he just kept looking at things too negatively. I mean, he was hanging out with Carmin right now! That had to count for something.

"I suppose you're right. I do love the flower shop and one day I'll actually own it... I hope. And Yuki has been nothing but good to me. Far better than I thought I deserved. And, of course, I have my other friends, too. Gany, Angelo, and you. You're a very cool dude, Carmin. Thanks for putting up with my antics." He chuckled again, giving the plant boy a grin. He tried his best to keep most of his teeth hidden but there was a brief glimpse of sharp teeth when he smiled.

Carmin’s face visibly got lighter when he was referred to as cool. It was a rare occurrence, it felt good to be considered cool.

“It’s really not a big problem.” Gabe’s so called antics weren’t really all that bad. Well, apart from that time he was drunk and phoned for his help. But even then, part of that was his own fault rather than Gabe’s. Definitely could’ve handled it better.

“I’m not sitting down by the way. Even if you don’t take the seat. I really meant it when I said I could hardly tell the difference.” It seemed they each had another thing in common. Stubbornness.

Gabe sighed and shook his head. "I offer you a seat in this trying time and you would refuse my kindness? My heart, how you wound it." He grinned. "Nah, it's fine. So, before I derailed our conversation grilling you on abilities, I just thought of something. How are your flower and leaves doing? No new issues come up? The stuff I offered work? Because I'll be honest, you definitely threw me for a loop. Normally, I can just look at a plant and I can tell if something's wrong but you are an exception. Maybe because you're... sentient?"

Gabe hummed, then shook his head. "Sorry, got sidetracked. So, plant good? No further damage? No new concerns?"

And so the battle for not taking that one stool raged on, probably set to continue for all eternity.

Carmin stuck out his arm and looked at the flowers. “No, they’ve been pretty normal lately. After you gave me that spray, the spots slowly started going away on their own. Now it’s all better, thank you again for that.” He pulled his arm back, moving his fingers to form a fist and release it while Gabe spoke about how he wasn’t used to dealing with sentience.

When Gabe asked again, he did think of another issue. Though he doubted Gabe would know anything about it.

“Well... um, there is one thing that’s a little concerning.” His eyes moved to the side and he wiggled a little uncomfortably. “Uh, this...” He pointed to the large flower on his head. “Most of the time when I pull a flower off, it just regrows. But recently I lost this big one and it was weird. Apparently I was acting weird and stuff but I don’t actually remember a thing.” This was probably a magic thing as opposed to a plant thing, but he figured Gabe would be able to tell for certain. “Is that something you can explain with plant knowledge?”

Gabe hummed, trying not to seem too pleased that the spray had worked. It was nice to see that he had been correct in his assessment of Carmin's little problem but he wasn't going to make a big deal out of it. But this new problem seemed to be a concern. The large flower was removed? How... terrifying. That couldn't have been very enjoyable for Carmin but he doesn't remember any of it yet acted "weird"?

"...Not that I can think off the top of my head, no. Although I could use more information on what exactly happened and what kind of oddness you experienced. And if the large flower was plucked, how long did it take to grow back?"

He frowned. "Uh, I don't know much about the oddness. It was like I was in one spot one second and in another the next. I can tell you how long it took though. It was around one hour. There was um, this guy... I'd never met before he found me and I apparently didn't have a flower when he did. But after some time it just grew back on its own. And that's when I started remembering stuff again."

He was starting to regret telling Gabe about this. Obviously he wasn't going to be able to help, this was definitely a dumb supernatural problem.

"So, I have an idea but nothing concrete. I don't think it's a problem that I can totally solve but I can at least guess? The giant flower is on your head so I'd almost say that it could be connected to your brain in some way? And basically removing it causes some sort of weird mental block? Since you seemed to remember things after it grew back but not when it was removed..."

Gabe tapped his chin in thought before giving a shrug. "I can't really help more than that. You might have to check with someone who knows magical plants since they might have a better idea. I'm sadly limited on my knowledge." He gave a small laugh. He felt bad not being able to help Carmin but he honestly couldn't think of what else he could possibly do for the guy. Magic just wasn't in Gabe's wheelhouse of plant knowledge. Although maybe he should look into it, considering he lived on an island full of magic.

"So... besides weird flower magic things, anything new going on with you?"
