It was a short, ten, maybe fifteen-minute taxi ride from the coffee shop to the hospital, but for Zora it seemed like an eternity. Every stop sign, traffic light or pedestrian crossing only added to her agitation.

Today had been a day full of unexpected encounters and surprises, fate put in motion, and a very distinct feeling at times of running towards something that couldn’t be avoided. As the taxi pulled up in front of the hospital, Zora paid the driver handsomely, not even thinking about the bills she passed him as she hurried out of the vehicle, slamming the door hard as she almost ran across the pavement up to the hospital doors frantic and just wanting to know what had happened.

She only vaguely knew what had happened at the coffee shop between Broen, Jude and Crawford. She had caught snippets from people that had been in the cafe and had seen everything, and from police attending the scene. She had surmised then, after seeing an ambulance appear, Jude being ushered into the waiting vehicle, and Broen on a stretcher, that a fight had broken out and that Frederick, who was in cuffs and being escorted to a waiting police car, was most likely being charged for assault, maybe? She didn’t know, and truthfully, at that precise moment, she could not care what happened to Broen’s father. At that precise moment, the only thing that was on her mind was whether Jude was okay, and what had happened to Broen and if he was fine.

As she pushed her way through the front doors of the hospital, Zoraida was immediately hit with that clinical smell that every hospital had. Glancing anxiously around a spacious open guest area, she saw that most of the tables and chairs were empty except for two or three people talking quietly among themselves.

Seeing a nurse walking by, Zora approached her and asked where admissions was - unsure since the last time she had been at the hospital, she had arrived there in abulance and with the paramedics. Nodding at the woman's directions, Zora headed down a short hall to another waiting area. There she approached the front desk, inquired after Broen and Jude and was told by the girl there that both men had been admitted, but that she’d have to wait. The hospital could not give her any details until they had both been seen by a doctor.

Jude didn't take all that long to go through. They wanted X-rays, to make sure he hadn't taken any major damage. He sort of had, but it wasn't that bad, in Jude's opinion. His standards were kind of skewed by the virtue of having gone through a wall at one point. Hearing one of your ribs might be cracked, but it's minor was pretty much fine with him. His X-ray was nearly impossible to read, and they'd been forced to take three different angles just to get that much. The bruising, on the other hand, was just starting to show up, and it was nasty.

His dad was going to have a goddamn fit, and Jude had to more or less fight the admitting nurse to make sure they didn't call anyone.

He'd already talked to the cops--giving his side of the story--and been cleared. They'd bandaged his ribs (which had hurt) and his hand (which hadn't much), and then they'd scooted him out of the room and told him he was cleared, don't leave down, the usual.

He'd pulled out his phone and fired off a multitude of texts, at which point he'd texted Zora. He'd asked where she was, and when he'd heard from her he'd gone to the waiting room.

There was blood on his shirt, but aside from the bandages on his hand, he looked more or less fine.

"What've you heard?" He called, heading right for her.

After being told she'd have to wait, Zora grabbed a coffee, added lots of sugar, and just waited. She had texted Celeste, told her where she was, then called her son, just needing to talk to him and see how he was. Then she had sat, flipped through magazines, stood and paced the corridors nervously.

After about an hour and a half, she heard a familiar voice and turned around, very relieved to see Jude. Watching him approach, she hurried down the hall to where he was noticing his bandages and the blood on his shirt and looking at him questioningly.

"A fight, I heard there was a fight, an altercation as the officer called it. Somebody said it was a brawl, and that people were hurt... " she told him as she repeated what she had overheard.

"The police wouldn't tell me anything really, and when I got there the ambulance had just arrived and Broen was being brought out on a stretcher," she told him her voice worried and strained, "What happened?"

"He's in and out," Jude said, skipping to the very end. He wasn't going to give her the whole story. She was worried, and he was going to start with that. "But he should be fine. To make a very long story short, Frederick snapped and went to town on him. His nose is probably broken. But they haven't talked to me yet. They told me he was going to be fine since we came in together, and then dealt with my own stuff."

He reached over, pulling up the side of his shirt to show his bandaged ribs before dropping it back down.

"I think you can probably guess what happened. Things were tense. They argued a bunch. Broen... uh, snapped a bit. He called Frederick out on his whole I did nothing wrong shtick, and then said that if he didn't see something wrong, he wouldn't have an issue with Broen telling everyone. So he started doing that, and Frederick got in his face, and then... Frederick swung."

"Oh, my god... Why would he do that? Broen can be mouthy, yes, but to go at him like that," Zora said in shock and disbelief when she heard Frederick had actually beat up his son. Now more concerned than before despite Jude's attempt to assure her that Broen was going to be fine.

She had been afraid that something like this might happen and had been relieved when Jude offered to accompany Broen. She had thought that being in a public place would prevent a scuffle. How wrong she had been. Also, the idea that Frederick had actually attacked his own son just made her slightly sick to her stomach as well.

And when Jude showed her his bandaged ribs, Zora just winced and then reached out and touched Jude's arm gently, "Are you sure you are okay? Did you want me to call Angelo? Or somebody else?" she asked, concerned that Jude was just saying he was alright just to appease her.

"I'm pretty sure my dad is going to go nuclear when he finds out," Jude said with a wince. "If he gets called to the hospital he's going to freak out, so I'd rather just head home and then tell him there, where it's obvious I'm safe and intact and will be better in a week or two."

The location of the reveal mattered a lot. He wasn't worried about Angelo--just his dad.

He was going to have to handle that very, very carefully.

"I'm alright though. Honestly. I've had way, way worse, and I'm sore, not in pain. I just have to be careful about lying on my side and not get into any fistfights." He cracked a smile at his little joke.

Despite how serious things were, Jude felt strangely light. Things had gone equal parts great and terribly. But what mattered was the way Broen had reacted.

He'd been happy, in the end.

"Frederick will be away for... for a long while, I imagine. I think he realized at the end that he was going to jail no matter what, and lost his temper."

"I can imagine that he'd be upset," Zora smiled in understanding, chuckling at his fist fight comment. She'd totally be the same if Jeremiah had was taken to the hospital and she was called in to get him.

"I saw Frederick being lead away in cuffs," she nodded, remembering the surprise and, yes, shock at seeing him in handcuffs. Although, she suspected Crawford was just as surprised at how things had turned out.

"Did he turn off Broen's powers? Is that why they got into a fist fight?" she asked kind of knowing the answer since they were standing in the hospital at the moment, and there had been no mention of magical involvement by doctors, first responders, or bystanders.

"Probably?" Jude said. He actually didn't know for sure, but he suspected he had. "When Broen started telling everyone and making a big announcement of it, Frederick tried to get him to stop. Broen flat out told him that the only way he wasn't telling anyone was if he swung, and... well, Frederick held out for a while and then he just couldn't take it anymore and punched Broen in the face. I jumped him, Broen fought back a bit, but in the end... I don't think Frederick had more than some light bruising. Broen stopped fighting back and he started laughing, and I think..."

Jude trailed off, distracted for a moment, before he shook his head.

"Broen won the war, even if he lost the fight. He kept his temper in check."

Zora just shook her head in amazement at everything Jude told her. She actually wished, on some level, that she had been there to see it. But she also knew that if she had been there, she would have intervened or tried to stop the fight, and that wasn't what Broen needed from her. He had needed to confront his father, and by the sounds of it, he had.

She was oddly happy for him, glad to hear he had kept his temper in check, even though he had been attacked by Frederick.

"You say telling people... like everything?" she asked Jude in surprise, amazed when it hit her what he might actually be talking about. Amazed that Broen had actually gone and told people about Frederick's abuse.

"Everything," Jude said with a small laugh. "I feel pretty bad for the people at the cafe, honestly. At best they looked horribly uncomfortable. Several people left. He was just getting to telling them about the back of his neck when..."

Jude popping his hand open.

"Pow. I jumped, but I was pretty much useless with one hand, and in complete honesty I forgot that I could summon guns. Not that they'd have done much better. For what Broen wanted..."

He trailed off.

"I think this was what he wanted. To prove he was better than his father. And he was."
