Thierry was sitting in the only room he'd found that didn't have students this time of day.

He sat in a cushy chair with a floppy doll that had been stitched and re-stitched and stitched again on the arm of the chair. In his hand was a needle and thread, working tirelessly over his latest creation.

It was another doll, currently lifeless with glassy button eyes and ears longer than the rest of its body. With his hands busy and his eyes trained on his work, he wouldn't notice if someone came in. Making the dolls he needed for his ritual took time, effort, and a lot of attention to detail. If he missed even one stitch, then he would have to start it all over again.

Well, he long since learned to take his time with these things.

A stitch in time saves nine, as they say.

Held in his mouth was what looked like a bead of some kind. It was certainly magical and glowed a blue, misty hue. The "favor" that would give this doll its final magical touch.

Kaitlyn needed to find some paper, she had drawn on all of hers and she wasn't sure when she'd be able to get a new sketch pad. The lady had said that the art room should have everything she needed to draw stuff. She walked in quickly her words a jumbled mess in a language that was easily identifiable as french. she didn't know that someone was in the room with her. In fact she had no idea that anyone was in the Art department.

she had rummaged through the stuff and finally found a pack of sketch pads and jumped down from the counter she was on. Turning around she spotted another kid "Oh! Hi..uhm I didn't know this room was occupied" She said nervously setting down her sketch pad to tug at one of the bows in her hair.

Of course Thierry didn't notice when Kaitlyn came in looking for paper, but he did notice when she started speaking in French. French was his first language. Granted it wasn't the pure, French-from-France version of the language, but a modified version--Haitian Creole French.

That was to say, he could kind of understand her and also kind of not. There were word she was speaking that he flat out didn't recognize, and the inflections of her voice seemed weird to the speaking meter he'd grown accustomed to.

He didn't want to admit that he looked up because he though, for a moment, he was back home, where children ran and shouted and played, and even though things weren't perfect they were still able to enjoy what life and vitality they still had.

Pain shot through his whole body as he stabbed himself in the finger with the sewing needle.

"Ouch!" he exclaimed, immediately sticking his wounded digit into his mouth.

"Oh, itsh okay," Thierry muttered around his finger. "I'm Cherry, nice to meet you."

Kaitlyn watched with wide eyes as she saw him prick his finger. She felt like she had caused it and she felt horrible. Going through her bag, she found a bandaid with rainbows on it, it was her favorite color. She handed him the bandage with an apologetic smile "Je suis désolé...uhm..Er... I'm Sorry?" she said testing out her english. She was told that not many people spoke french on the island by the lady who checked in on her. Dorm parent?? Or whatever, she was still getting used to the things on the island. She had so much freedom and she wasn't used to it.

"oh I'm Kaitlyn, nice too meet you" She said slowly trying to make sure she got all syllables right. "...Wait did you Say Cherry or Terry?" she asked confused, perhaps she had heard him wrong. He seemed to have an accent also...did that mean he was from a different place too? She hoped so, she hated feeling like she was the odd one out. So many people in her class seemed normal and had friends they've known forever and she just didn't seem to fit in. Of course she drew her dinosaur and people wanted to be her friend but like.....that wasn't real friendship.

"Uhm...are you making a doll?" she asked looking at the materials in his hand. she liked playing dolls, maybe they could play with dolls together.

"Itsh okay," he murmured, his tongue licking over his wounded finger. It seemed like the blood just wouldn't stop beading on the tip of his digit and every lick came back with the coppery taste of blood. Ugh. He hated the way blood tasted. "Itsh my own fault. I shoulda been pay attenchun..."

Agh... ow.

He pulled his finger out of his mouth, if only to be able to speak to the girl that came into the room without any barriers. "My name is Thierry Virtue." He said properly. The boy started to reach out his hand to shake hers, but thought better of it when he remembered his finger was still bleeding.

Remembering what he was doing, Thierry looked down and inspected the doll. This put a bit of a damper on his plans. He couldn't sew his doll with an instrument that had tasted blood, and he certainly couldn't keep working on it with a bloody, injured finger.

The last thing he wanted was to taint this.

He spat out the bead he'd been holding in his mouth and pocketed it, carefully severing the thread and moving the needle away from the doll.

"Oh, yes... I was making a ritual doll."

Kaitlyn set the bandaid on the table near them just in case the boy wanted it. "Oh that's a cool name" She said smiling instantly perking up since the boy still wanted to talk to her. Especially since he seemed busy, not many kids liked talking to her. Maybe it was because she was new to the island and she hadn't made many friends. She had hoped that things would be different, she was supposed to fit in on the island and while she did see different people she hadn't quite found a friend she could talk to and play with.

"What for?? What's a ritual doll?? Is it like a regular doll and you can play make-believe with it?" she asked her head tilted still and looking at the door with a confused face, it didn't look like any of the dolls she had seen on t.v or drew or had before. it looked more like Fluffski would look if she had sewn it together. Though she had to admit that the doll was pretty cool looking and the fact that he could sew was even cooler.

"Thanks," he said softly, pushing his locks out of his face and watching her as she placed a band-aid nearby. He leaned over and wrapped it around his finger. It didn't stop the pain that radiated from his injured digit, but it made him feel better that it wasn't just out in the open air, getting infected and whatnot.

He smiled as he tucked his work away and picked up his other doll, a patchwork of thread and different fabrics of multiple colors and ages.

"I guess you could say that." Thierry was quiet as he tried to explain what exactly it was he was doing. "A ritual doll is a doll you use in rituals. It's usually the source of the power, and the spirits you are attempting to communicate with with communicate back through the doll."

The Haitian boy hugged his tattered toy. "Though, I guess technically you could play make believe with them, though that can sometimes have disastrous consequences."

Kaitlyn was glad that he took the doll, it was a burden off her shoulders. She felt responsible for him pricking his finger. She was sure that it hurt, the needle looked kind a sharp especially since it was a sewing needle. She made a mental note to be less surprising when entering the room, so that this didn't happen again.

"Oh you can communicate with spirits..and do rituals..isn't the voo -something? I've heard of it before" She didn't want to say that she had heard bad things, the boy seemed nice and she had people call her evil before because of what she could do. It wasn't the boy's fault if he was good a voodoo. People just had gifts and were special, and it wasn't up for people for to judge.

"Oh, Hmm then it wouldn't be a good Idea to play make believe with them. So what do the rituals do? I mean do the dolls walk?" She asked curiously, she had never met a kid that could do cool things and was willing to talk to her.

He nodded. "Voodoo," Thierry said, smiling as he said it. "I practice Voodun. It's my religion."

Saying that made him think of home. It made him think of the house that had collapsed on him before Helen saved him. He pushed those thoughts out of his head.

"Well, basically the ritual calls up a Loa--that's like a spirit, and they take energy from the doll, which disintegrates as they appear."

He moved his hands as he spoke.

"Then, you can ask them for advice or for favors in exchange for things they want, like corn bread or cigarettes or a newspaper."

Kaitlyn nodded, she had never met a person with a different religion than her. She found this absolutely incredible, that the island housed people different than normal people. Was it normal where he came from to.have that religion? That was so cool.

"Oh, that make sense, at least sense about why you shouldn't play with them. Spirits like cornbread? I never that, are the spirits grown up spirits? I thought only grown ups smoked Cigarettes " she asked tilting her head. She was staring at Thierry with big curious eyes. He was so Fascinating
