For one thing, he didn't ask for a paycheck for his nighttime patrols. He had no need for money. He had nothing to spend it on. He had no true needs, the way living humans generally did. Objects were just objects.

He was also almost one hundred percent effectively immortal. At night he was intangible, a literal ghost. People and objects would simply pass through him unless he made a point of trying to become solid. It meant no one was ever going to get the jump on him. Short someone coming into the school with the express purpose of exorcising him, there was really nothing the vast majority of people could do.

He was also dead silent when he moved, since he didn't actually walk, and while he seemed to glow faintly, he didn't actually give off any light.

He was essentially the perfect person for patrolling the hallways at night, and the school made good use of that fact. Of course, basically all the night guards either knew about him or had been warned, since he tended to be one of several people patrolling at any given time.

Not tonight, however.

He glided along a darkened hallway, miming walking even if his feet didn't hit the ground. It made him look less alien, in case any students were still lingering on their way home from a party. It was not technically halloween anymore, but it was close enough, and he wouldn't have been surprised to see students still trickling in.

Quiet as always. Aliasse had avoided most of the people who strolled around at night, and even though that might seem contrary to her role as a security personnel, she had tabs on whoever was around her, even though there were a number of walls between them. The people she sensed were simply passing by, and didn't go anywhere off limits. But if anything did go wrong, she would know where to go.

For the moment, she walked down the halls of the classrooms, trying every door she passed to make sure they were locked. If they weren't and nobody was inside, she'd lock it herself before moving on. An cigarette was pinched between her lips, but it remained unlit while she was inside. Setting off the smoke sensors would be a bad start for her, and although she wasn't updated on the school's policy, she was sure that the academy prohibited smoking anywhere inside the campus.

Her head began to pulsate from extended use of her powers, forcing her to turn them off to cool down. She'd admit it was a small price to pay, but it does get annoying. Though on the bright side, she was feeling like the headaches didn't come as fast as previous days, which brightened her outlook a little.

She pulled out a notepad from her pocket and quickly flipped through the pages to find the map she made of the campus. Hey, it was a big place, and she was still getting used to it. After a quick consultation, she turned right and headed for the chemistry lab.

With her sensory power temporarily offline, she flicked on her flashlight to guide her though the darker areas of the academy. Some halls were lit, and others weren't. The latter areas was where nobody was expected to be at this hour. Hopefully, she wouldn't run into some nighttime couples hiding in the shadows.

Makara was intangible, and unless he put an effort in - or was truly mad enough - he could neither touch things nor be touched.

It was the flicker of light that caught his eye, causing him to pause. In the shadows, he was essentially invisible, and while people often mistook him for glowing, he gave off no light. It was simply a trick of the eyes, an optical illusion based on the fact that light didn't seem to 'light him up' naturally.

He turned, and the light came a bit more into view, passing down the hallway in front of him. A flashlight. He moved forward, sliding into the hallway behind the flashlights carrier. He began to glide closer, not bothering to mime walking as he usually did. He was not a terribly imposing person in the daylight, standing only five feet tall, but at night he was an otherworldly wraith, and had scared more than one student out of their wits.

This student would probably have a similar reaction.

[[The cigarette was unlit btw]]

Aliasse turned a corner and yawned as she reached for a room's knob. It was unlocked for some reason. She peered in with her flashlight, scanning the room for any signs of life. Or unlife, given the fact this island was home to everything found in books and mythology. "One of these days, something's going to go missing from one of these classrooms," she grumbled to herself as she pressed on the locking mechanism before shutting the door.

It was eerily quiet, making the girl's caution peak. From experience, this kind of silence was always where something jumps at her from the shadows, and it was a hard feeling to shake, despite the fact that this place was safer than others.

However... old habits were hard to kill, and when Aliasse saw something transparent, floating, and moving towards her, her first instinctual response was to draw her gun and fire two shots at it. What the hell am I doing?! When she realized what she had done, the bullets were already flying towards their target.

Her slowed perception, which became active after her first shot, allowed her to watch helplessly as her projectiles sailed towards the ghost. This was not a good way to keep her job here.

But suddenly, a spark flashed between the ghost and Aliasse, followed by a chinking sound. The bullets collided in mid-air. Aliasse teleported the first bullet towards the opposite direction, remembering that she had the power to do so, and got it to slam into the second. A risky move that could have ended up with both of them getting shot, had she miscalculated.

"Are you alright?" she asked, quickly putting her sidearm back to its holster, though she didn't take a step forward just yet. Thanks to its internal suppressor, there wouldn't be a semblance of a gunshot, rather all that would be heard was the gun's components slamming to their places.

She shone her light at the ghost. He wasn't someone he met before, but she definitely saw him somewhere in the school. "My apologies, I didn't mean to shoot at you."

He knew it intimately, and if it had been the actual sound of gunfire he'd heard, things might have gone poorly. As it was, the noise sounded unfamiliar to him, beyond that it was some kind of dangerous sound, and he didn't even realize what had almost happened until he heard the bullets hitting the floor with a metallic clink.

Oh. He'd almost been shot. He didn't feel particularly threatened, or even surprised. He should have realized the risk was there around the time he decided to sneak up on someone he thought was a student sneaking around. Students had powers in the academy, and some were a bit more trigger happy than others.

He hadn't actually been shot though, so it seemed like a moot point.

"I'm fine." He said simply, his voice sounding strange. It didn't sound like he was talking at all - more like someone was broadcasting his voice. It was tinny and far away.

"There is no harm done. Bullets wouldn't have harmed me anyway." Better to get that out of the way, lest the woman be upset by the possibility. She was certainly a woman, and she seemed a bit older than he would have thought. Not a student then?

"I startled you. Are you staff?" What kind of staff would be going around so late at night with a flashlight? A night watchman perhaps - one just like him. Security maybe. Dedicated security, rather than sometimes security as he was.

No harm, no foul. The ghost reported that he was fine, and that brought a little relief to the woman. The fitting voice was something she was accustomed to, so it wasn't much of a bother. As he revealed that he wouldn't have been hurt anyway, Aliasse bent over to pick up the fused projectiles and stuff it in her pocket. Even so, if she didn't do anything and let the bullets pass him, who could say no one else would get hurt.

She nodded her head. "Yes. I'm Aliasse Ryley, one of the new staff assigned to the security detail. I'm assuming you too are staff?" She seemed quick to brush off what had just transpired, but she had no need to dwell on it.

Her way of speaking wasn't at all authoritative nor too formal. It was more loose and casual, but at the same time she had a tone of seriousness that allowed a glimpse at her strict upbringing.

One would think that it would be a good idea to notify the night guard of any nighttime spooks that'd be roaming around. Had she come with her full gear, this mishap would have been so much worse.

He supposed he should have been more alarmed than he was, but it felt strange and unreal. Part of it was probably the sound. The sound wasn't the same, and it brought up none of the old memories. Different gun. Different sound. Was he really that surprised that it didn't upset him?

"My name is Makara Som." Or Som Makara, but she seemed... European? American? Like someone from one of the many countries where your given name came first. "I teach, and serve as a counsellor for undead students." He said simply, before deciding that he should probably explain why he was there specifically. "Since I have no need to sleep, I often patrol at night." He was not truly a member of security however. "I suppose they probably forgot to tell you that in training, whether accidentally or as a joke." Or a form of basic hazing, considering the sight of him was enough to scare most people.

Well... he seemed to take almost getting shot pretty well. Was he used to this sort of stuff, or did he not just care, given that he wouldn't have been hurt? Then again, he is a ghost, so life wouldn't be much of an important subject for him.

His name was Makara Som. A teacher and a councilor for dead students. Err... undead students. And also patrols the halls at night... a hard working man he was.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Som." She thought about the possibility, but she couldn't see which part of this meeting would be funny. "I hope it's the former. This joke isn't very funny." Could have ended fatally, especially since they had no idea how she would react.

The fact that he wouldn't have been hurt certainly helped, but it wasn't really the base of the problem.

"A pleasure to meet you as well, Miss Ryley." He said, pressing his hands together in front of him and bowing in a sampeah.

Straightening up, he shook his head. "This is hardly the first time I've been used to prank someone, although usually such pranks do not involve bullets. Normally it just means sending me to fetch something at night near a jumpy teacher who is working late... especially if they're new to the island." People who had been there a while or even grown up there were made of tougher stuff. No one who had spent their whole life on the island was going to even bat an eyelash at a ghost.

Aliasse raised a brow at the ghost's gesture. She recognized it, but wasn't so sure which country it originated from. Was it... Cambodia? Yeah, that sounded about right. Was he from around there? Wouldn't be surprising, given how mixed the people were in the island.

She listened further and found that Makara was a frequent tool in petty pranks. It seemed a little demeaning, being used for that sort of thing, but then again sometimes it's the little things that keep people sane. "And you're fine with that?" she asked.

She may not have been well acquainted with the island, but she was familiar with ghosts and other beings the average human calls the supernatural. Given her initial reaction, it would hint that her type of familiarity wasn't all that family-friendly.
