For one thing, he didn't ask for a paycheck for his nighttime patrols. He had no need for money. He had nothing to spend it on. He had no true needs, the way living humans generally did. Objects were just objects.
He was also almost one hundred percent effectively immortal. At night he was intangible, a literal ghost. People and objects would simply pass through him unless he made a point of trying to become solid. It meant no one was ever going to get the jump on him. Short someone coming into the school with the express purpose of exorcising him, there was really nothing the vast majority of people could do.
He was also dead silent when he moved, since he didn't actually walk, and while he seemed to glow faintly, he didn't actually give off any light.
He was essentially the perfect person for patrolling the hallways at night, and the school made good use of that fact. Of course, basically all the night guards either knew about him or had been warned, since he tended to be one of several people patrolling at any given time.
Not tonight, however.
He glided along a darkened hallway, miming walking even if his feet didn't hit the ground. It made him look less alien, in case any students were still lingering on their way home from a party. It was not technically halloween anymore, but it was close enough, and he wouldn't have been surprised to see students still trickling in.
