Joshua saw the boy look to him, but he lost his chance to catch his gaze once more. He could sense his meek demeanor and his growing anxiety. But Joshua refused to relieve this boy of his presences because he had a deep drive to know more about him.

“Introduce yourself, sweetheart,” the woman, who was clearly his mother coaxed him with a gentle nudge in his direction.

His entire body became tense as he instantly had to internally fight with himself not to reach out and touch him. The realization... and feeling jarred him...

Joshua was given no time to properly think... because the boy was looking up to him and finally giving him his name...

“B-Brendon, sir, i-it’s nice to meet you.”

“Brendon..." he repeated... slowly and gently gave him a curt nod, but never broke eye contact with him. “It’s a pleasure...”

“Brendon…,” The man repeated his name and Brendon could only focus on his
rapidly beating heart. “It’s a pleasure…”

It was at that moment that the door at the front of the store opened and closed,
and the sound of two people talking floated their way. Brendon instantly tensed
further, his gaze jerking down and away from the store owner. His heart was
pounding wildly, and he wanted to flee… He wanted to run away. That feeling
was so strong inside of him.

“Excuse me for a moment,” The man spoke up and turned to, he presumed, go
greet the new customers. And Brendon quickly used the moment to begin
stepping back.

His mother wrapped her arm around him and pulled him up against her side. She
was smiling down at him and smoothing his bangs away in a silent gesture meant
to give him comfort and ease his anxiety.

But, Brendon just wanted to leave the store…!

The feeling was so strong, but he restrained himself and wouldn’t even allow himself to offer his hand. Any form of contact needed to be avoided if he were to continue this charade.

He tensed and immediately moved his gaze behind him as he heard the front doors open and he silently cursed himself for not taking care of that first.

“Excuse me for a moment,” he turned his attention back to them and gave a simple nod before making his way towards the two people who had just entered.

The two who had entered were a couple that had come in here on more than one occasion and they did not get along. He kept his temper under control however because he was well aware of the company he did intend on keeping.

“You’ll both need to return later. I’m currently busy.” Joshua stated very bluntly, but kept his tone void of any emotion.

“It really amazes me how you stay in business, Mr. Ardel.” The woman returned snidely, but they did not argue and immediately left the store. “He is honestly a bitter old man trapped in a youth, I say. It’s preposterous.”

Joshua sealed off her voice as he closed the door and could see the older woman glaring at him. But he gave her no attention and proceeded to lock the door and turn the ‘open’ sign to ‘closed’.

He didn’t disagree with her statements... With his attitude he would no doubt eventually close down, but the twenty two year old didn’t care. This was simply a source of income and nothing more...

Brendon couldn’t slow his fiercely pounding heart and the longer he stood beside
his mother… waiting for the owner to return… the more anxiety built within him. A
part of him was trying to be logical, trying to be sensible, and tell him that he was
overreacting… But, the natural instinct within him was overriding everything else.

For what could have possibly been the first time in his entire sixteen years of life…
Brendon spoke up to give his own opinion: “Mother, I… I believe we should leave.”

“What?” She asked, a little worried but surprised at the same time as she looked
down at her boy. She was frowning softly, not at all sensing anything that Brendon
was picking up on. “Sweetie, we need your schooling books. I am hoping Mr.
Ardel can show us where they may be. Or, in the right direction, if he does not
have any within his store.”

His gaze dulled slightly as he stared outside and tried to bring himself to reality. Just what was it that he was doing? The couple like many others in Manta Carlos knew of his true company.

He was not a gentleman, or courteous. He was a heartless bastard that cared for nothing and took interest in nothing...

That was his life and there was nothing underneath that...

Joshua took in a slow breath and pulled himself away from the window before he could become distracted with the vibrant season once more.

“I… I am feeling ill, mother,” Brendon… lied. His cheeks were red and burning as
he stared up at his mother, silently praying that she could not see through his façade.
H-He wanted to leave the store and that overwhelming desire was pushing him past
his limitations and making him do… u-unthinkable things.

“So… So that is why I, I wish to at least wait outside where it is cooler,” He
told her, straining a little as he saw her frown of disapproval. He had never before
asked to be alone. He had never before separated from his mother’s side.

H-He had…—

Brendon blushed and lowered his gaze as he caught sight of… o-of Mr. Ardel’s
return. But, he glanced up soon after to look imploringly toward his mother.

“Do you have a place one can sit, Mr. Ardel?” His mother asked, glancing up toward
the man. “My son is feeling a bit ill and I think it would be good for him to sit.”

Brendon’s heart skipped a beat before it continued its fierce pounding ritual, and
his wide amber gaze instantly riveted on the bookstore owner.

o... So that is why I, I wish to at least wait outside where it is cooler.”

Brendon’s soft voice was faint as if he were trying to whisper, but the bookstore was small and his voice stood out more strongly to Joshua.

He made his way back to the area the two of them were located and immediately found himself unwillingly captivated by the boy once more. Brendon’s wide amber gaze instantly caught his and he quickly looked away appearing flustered.

The boy’s appearance and response affected him... because the two of them held nothing in common. Their personalities were opposite... and Brendon’s innocence reminded him of his own...that had not existed since he was seven years old...

“Do you have a place one can sit, Mr. Ardel?” Miss Autumn spoke up and caused his gaze to move to her. “My son is feeling a bit ill and I think it would be good for him to sit.”

Joshua’s gaze had already moved back to Brendon... when he jerked his gaze up and stared at him with that same innocent expression. Joshua thought of his earlier words and had a feeling that the boy was not ill. Since, he had been displaying uneasiness around him from the first moment they laid eyes on each other.

“Right this way,” he gave a light incline of his head towards Brendon and raised his hand for him to begin towards the front of the bookstore.

“Right this way,” The man gestured for him to follow, and it was only upon the
insistence of his mother that he did so. She walked with him, as the store
owner began to lead them forward.

B-But, Brendon still persisted in trying to plead with his mother.

“B-But, the cooler air, mother…,” He whispered to her, his fingers curling into
her gown. She would not listen to him or hear of it and reached down to wrap
her arm around him and keep him at her side.

“You will sit inside, where I can see you, until I finish my shopping,” She told him
with the authority of a mother.

They were worlds apart... and yet he had an interest in him... how peculiar. Joshua kept all emotion from his face as he began to lead them towards the cash register. Behind his desk was a door that lead to the storage room and within it the only chair available in his entire store.

“B-But the cooler air, mother...” Brendon whispered behind him and Joshua glanced back towards him... taking in the way he clung to his mother in dire need.

It caused his chest to tighten with displeasure that once again he did not let quite reach his eyes.

“If you’re so concerned with fresh air, I’ll open a window for you,” he offered as they stopped before the cash register and flashed Brendon a knowing gaze.

“If you’re so concerned with fresh air, I’ll open a window for you,” The man
before them offered, his voice so deep… a-and it effected Brendon… when
he didn’t understand why or even in what way it effected him.

He gave the man a sulking look and tightened his hold around his mother.
…He… He was pouting, he realized. He could feel a grumpiness swelling
within him but also a strange yearning that he couldn’t understand.
He felt restless.

“Thank you, sir,” He stated with a mad face he didn’t try to hide.
