Name: Neelanjan “Neil” Martin
Age: 17
Birthday: January 31st
Gender: Male
Category: Student
Class: College
Grade: 1st Year
College Major: Computer Science
Appearance Description:
Neil’s mother is Northwest Indian and his father is Jewish-American. He has his mother's medium brown skin, but his father's large eyes and chestnut-brown hair. It is cut into messy layers, framing a heart-shaped jaw line. Unfortunately for him, he did not get his father's height, and he stands at 5'10", just slightly above average. He doesn't mind not being taller though. It isn't as though he wants to be remembered for his appearance, anyhow.
For that reason, Neil has never been all that careful about what he wears. He has no qualms walking to the store in sweatpants. Though he would draw the line at wearing them when he goes to the mall, or when he goes to class. Instead, he is likely to throw on a T-shirt or sleeveless tank, along with a pair of jeans or board shorts when it is hot. He does his best to avoid wearing anything on his feet but his flip-flops, and will do so until it gets to a point in winter when his feet are half-frozen. When it's cold, he'll throw on a parka with a scarf, along with a pair of sports trainers. He could probably afford nice clothes, but prefers to spend his money on other things.
Personality Description:
Calm: The first thing most notice about Neil is that little seems to faze him. He is able to keep a cool in most situations, rationalizing his actions with what he deems to be common sense. He prefers to think things through rather than go rushing in headlong, though there are certainly exceptions to this rule. Like anyone else, he is susceptible to flights of passion when strong emotions come into play, though this is a rare occurrence.
Ingenious: With a sharp mind that enjoys deductive reasoning, he was consistently top of his class back home in Australia. He was always great at thinking out of the box, which earned him far better grades than people who learned through rote memorization. He'll never admit it out loud, but Neil will pride himself on being the smartest person in the room in most situations.
Asocial: Everything you see when he does talk to you is practiced-- he can do it, but he probably doesn’t want to. Dealing with people is difficult. Stringing words together is hard. Add the fact that he doesn’t actually enjoy talking to others or being in the company of most, and you have someone who would much rather be behind a screen than out in the real world. He understands the necessity of human interaction, but finds it largely draining and boring unless he’s already comfortable with you.
Loyal: However, once he decides he likes you, Neil is definitely someone to rely on. He will have your back no matter what, and will cover for you even if he believes that you are doing something wrong. Neil can definitely be hypocritical when it comes to his nearest and dearest. What he might deem unforgivable when done by someone he doesn't like might be a mild annoyance when done by a friend. It is something he is aware of, but he has rationalized it as being a defense mechanism to maintain his few friendships.
Distant: Neil is simply not a very trusting person by nature. It isn't that he has a fear of being hurt, no. Rather, Neil feels that trust is something that has to be given out to only a select few. Unless he absolutely has to be such as in a work situation, Neil is certainly not a team player. While he might be good at following instructions, he will not be all too happy about doing so unless he respects you.
Jaded: Deep down, Neil has always had the worldview that most people are going to end up going nowhere. Some teenage partiers end up working at a cash register, asking you whether you want fries with that. Others will end up at a nine-to-five dead end job, slaving their lives away at something that they don't care about nor love. While some might be content being just another cog in the machine that runs society, Neil sees humanity as a mass of untapped potential. He doesn't think people are innately useless. However, most people haven't learned to channel their talents and hone their energy—and maybe some day, he will. Maybe some day.
Powers: Neil has only just discovered that he is a Transcendent, someone with parts of him embedded into different timelines and the ability to recall these memories. He does not remember or know anything yet, and neither can he use his latent powers.
With some practice, he will soon be able to open up small, approx. 1 x 1 m windows into other timelines, one window at a time. He cannot choose what timelines he opens windows into just yet, and can only hold the windows open for about a 30 sec time span. He can, however, retrieve items from these windows if he crawls in to get them as long as they can fit through the entrance. Granted, he cannot go very far within the other timelines because of how much energy it takes to keep them open.
Basically, he can steal a dog but not an elephant.
Biography:
This timeline appeared to proceed the way most did. A gifted child was born to wealthy parents in Perth, Australia, smarter and more athletic than most his age. He would be leaps and bounds ahead of his peers both academically and socially, calm and collected but conceited to say the least. He would love computers, love the Internet, and his life would proceed smoothly. Far too smoothly.
The child would get an invitation to a drunken party when he was 12 and his friends were 14. During the party, he would realize that his friends going to spend the rest of their youths partying, only to gear themselves up for either working behind a check-in counter or a nine-to-five job that they were going to hate. It would set the steps down a spiral of antisocial behavior where Neil gradually withdrew from his friends with the realization that he was better than them. He would gradually cut out most of humanity, causing a detachment from the world. This turned into social isolation in some timelines, and Neil to become a cold, heartless villain in some.
In one world in particular, he tore the fabric of the universe apart, using his knowledge and the alias “Nathaniel” to destroy a virtual reality that tethered to life itself. Humanity was dying out and the world was falling apart: might as well go out with a bang, and drag everyone else down with him. He broke down the artificial utopia humanity had made, causing the deaths of millions of players as well as his own.
This never happened here: a rift in time caused a dramatic shift in Neil’s nature.
He never went to that party. Instead of arrogant, he became burdened with the realization that he and his friends no longer had anything in common. Computers, an increasingly growing interest, became his life. Any socializing he did was out of necessity rather than desire; most of his relationships became forced. However, he found solace on the Internet, where he met people and found real friends. It was as though there were people who he could care about, just scattered all across the world.
Deciding that maybe all he needed to do was get out of Perth, Neil applied to college outside of Australia and got into MIT.
Two days after receiving his acceptance letter, he found himself in a foreign place.
Additional Information:
- The Sorting Hat would have put him in either Ravenclaw or Slytherin. He would most likely have been Slytherin in any alternate universe, but that potential was never quite awakened in him here.
- His mother was raised Hindu, and still prays to the gods and goes to temple sometimes. His father isn't religious, and neither is Neil.
- Neil really, really hates Apple. Not only is he a large fan of open-source, he can't stand how expensive they are. Please don't bring PC vs. Mac up around him. He will launch into an extremely passionate tirade, and it is one of the few subjects that he can go on for hours about.
- If anyone asks about Australia, he will do his utmost best to convince them that drop bears are 100% real, and that they definitely ride on kangaroos.
- He’s been questioning his sexuality for a while: he’s never really been interested in women.
- Man he had like 2 friends in most of his incarnations. I mean, you wonder why, BUT let’s see if he ends up actually making more than that this time.
