Name: Dr. Wendell Paige
Age: 38
Birthday: August 19th
Gender: Trans male
Sexuality: Who has time for that but also will get flustered and ???? at being genuinely flirted with sexual & romo- additionally insecure about these things for various reasons
Category: Citizen
Birth Place / Hometown: Manta Carlos
Occupation: Head of an eldritch specified branch of a bigger organization, The Watchers Project, a group dedicated to both researching and defending against larger supernatural threats- with a reputation for first trying any peaceful routes to solving problems they can, and ultimately always doing what's necessary.
Race/Species: Human
Appearance Description:
Wendell is short, just barely reaching five feet tall, and chubby. He has wide hips, stretch marks, and wears a binder when around others (as opposed to at home either sleeping or having lonely nerd pj parties). He has light brown hair with a slight rosy tint to it, which is soft and always in a bedhead state. He wears large glasses and has a baby face, with a button nose almost always slightly pink cheeks. His eyes are big, round, and a mild blue.
His clothes tend to be in gentle colors, older fashioned, and with more of an emphasis on comfort than anything else. If one were cruel, you could describe them as frumpy- but if you like huge obvious dorks, he's most definitely your guy.
The doctor doesn't help his shortness by casually making himself smaller out of timidness. When he talks about his work and pretty much only then does he take on shocking confidence and lead situations with a great deal of decisiveness.
His voice is small and careful, and in uncomfortable situations, has the tone equivalent of tripping over your own feet. He can get rambly and out of breath when in excited geeking out mode, and may or may not squeak a bit. For serious work mode, it's studious lecture voice. For really serious boss mode, it's clear, settled, in control tones.
Personality Description:
Wendell is a huge dork nerd, through and through.
He can be very awkward socially and in basic life things- such as talking on the phone, having a normal sleep schedule/taking care of his own human needs in general, making friends and keeping up with them, etc.
Wendell has an intense passion for creatures that are supposedly unknowable and intense, terrifying in nature, and in particular, the Eldritch- and they're his job, his life work now. He has a strong sense of morbid fascination, as well as a need to use his power to try and be with and help things that others just can't.
He would never do something with malicious intent, but for the scientific 'greater good' or his own curiosity? That's a very different story, and the very harmless seeming doctor isn't without blood on his hands.
Wendell, although prone to social awkwardness and embarrassment, has surprisingly tough skin and is insensitive to others trying to be cruel to him. Who has time for that? He really just doesn't care.
Wendell's job is his life. He doesn't have many side hobbies that can't somehow be interconnected to his job, doesn't take a lot of real days off, and hasn't had close relationships that he didn't meet through work in years and years. Not since he was in school, really.
Powers:
Incorruptible super-sanity
Even when presented with terrible creatures, unknown horrors from another realm, or even the evils of other humans, Wendell will stay steady. While in everyday situations he will get terribly anxious, the true extremes in life won't knock him down, and in fact, he's more useful in a real crisis.
He isn't emotionally dead, and won't be dangerously unsympathetic to anyone- but this ability can make him detached, and scare others with how unaffected he is.
It definitely gives him the ability to go too far with things.
Wendell cannot be mentally broken.
Perks of the job:
Wendell has both high tech and magic protections on him as a basic precaution against others attacking him, which also monitor his wellbeing. These are organization given and very wired into his system. These protections don't make him immortal, and can be broken up with a lot of effort, but they do help a great deal, and will send out a distress signal if he gets too injured.
A lot of these are aimed hugely towards bodily protection from Eldritch beings, since Wendell has the mental part covered just on his own, and everything comes together very efficiently (as all the energy can be focused more strongly in a specific area, and most of the other Eldritch Watchers team have to have protections everywhere to spend so much time around their subjects.)
Biography:
Wendell was an only child born to non-magical, human parents living on the island- both family members to the extraordinary who were brought along for the ride and less than thrilled about it, sharing a need for normalcy in the out of place, abnormal world they were unwillingly thrown into.
Wendell was raised with an overbearing amount of caution, parents always terrified of every little thing and impressing those feelings on their child. They were a distant little family, rejecting the magical relatives they'd moved to Manta Carlos for as well as the diverse people living around them. When Wendell showed signs of befriending others, they'd scold and direct him away from it, sometimes their excuses outright xenophobic, but mostly excuses around that he should focus on getting as good as an education as possible with no distractions.
And for the most part, Wendell was a very quiet, obedient, diligent child. He always had an odd relationship with Manta Carlos as a whole, never really living there, his parents always seeming this close to moving but then not- there wasn't enough money usually being the excuse. His parents were bitter, stagnant people, and at this point they were now waiting for their child to become a success and get them all out of there.
When Wendell was in middle school, he was allowed to go on a school field trip, something he was greatly excited for. It was a very special occasion for someone with such strict, worrying parents, and he didn't hate them for how they raised him, taking all their values very seriously- but he did have a strong curiosity in him, which he'd always tried to bury, but was bright and alive all the same, needing to be offered something.
And something happened with that school trip, something went terribly wrong, and small, quiet, forgettable Wendell was left behind in the true danger zone. The assumed powerless and weak child came face to face with a very dangerous escaped creature, overwhelming and awful, and he came out of it completely unscathed.
Not just unscathed, but thrilled, with new life in his being and ambition in his brilliant mind. Now the school knew something was up with this child, and so did his parents, who were less than thrilled- their first reaction was to be in tears, joyful that he'd survived, but once that passed and the realization of why he'd survived settled in, the way they'd been thinking of people with abilities all this time... it changed things, and they could never go back to how it had been before.
But at least Wendell had more room to pursue his new interests, now. And he never held a grudge against his parents for how they treated him, how now, even with him, they were distant. He would still help them get off the island, and then he supposed... go their separate ways.
After finishing school and going through college, Wendell, through his impressive intelligence and projects, was offered a job in the prestigious and secretive Watchers Project organization. Through this, he was able to move his parents to america, and then fully pursue work. A little in to his first year of work, he'd been learning a lot and making great leaps already, as well as realizing he was a man and transitioning his lifestyle to fit that more (although ultimately, it wasn't a very dramatic change for anyone, and quickly was just another thing settled in the background of Wendell's work and research).
Although more than qualified, Wendell had been turning down a great deal of promotions for years- until they caught a human socializing Eldritch being and well. Someone had to start a proper Eldritch specialized branch of the organization, didn't they? This was Wendell's passion, his time to shine and truly make a difference. So after getting the permission and setting up the team, he moved back to Manta Carlos with his new subject, brimming with determination to make things better for everyone and dig into all the unknown knowledge others were too scared or disgusted to touch. Ready to innovate new things and better understanding with Eldritch beings and the school, the city, the island. These events are still all only around a half a year old or less, and since this, even more Eldritch have been appearing, just in time.
Between settling back in to the place he'd been born but never truly made home, fighting everyday awkwardness, the strangeness of being anyone's boss, and the utter amazing experiences he's having researching and helping creatures man was supposedly not meant to know, Wendell has a lot on his plate.
It feels like his life has only really just started.
Additional Information:
Has a doctorate in supernatural species studies (with a lot of leaning towards the darker ones) and, on the side, studied a lot of general science related + dark arts subjects, while going through college at starlight.
His coworkers have always thought of him as brilliant, rather charming in his social awkwardness, but also rather distant and untouchable. Everyone always treated him with respect, and sometimes as a higher up, even though he so often turned down actual promotions.
