Name: Roan Doe
Age: 24 years old – Roan will stop aging at 25 (the age he first died).
Birthday: June 27th however Roan does not know this – He celebrates his birthday on June 30th
Gender: Male
Category: Student
Class: College – 1st Year Biochemistry
Appearance Description: Roan’s appearance is hard to pin down, because of what he is. Before being unbound, ‘Roan’ was tall, standing approximately 6ft 2ins and weighing in at around 155lbs. He had coal black hair that showed deep brown streaks when it caught the light. His eyes were almond shaped, coloured hazel and framed with dark lashes. Roan’s skin was pale and burned easily in even weak sunlight.
Roan prefers to dress smart-casual at all times. Typically wearing a dark green shirt under a deep navy, tight sweater. Dark blue jeans and brown boots for comfort. He wears a black, thick-strap watch on his left wrist fastened with three silver bars.
In terms of why it is hard to pin down an appearance, Roan is Fae. Specifically Roan is a mirror. What this means is that Roan projects back at people that which they put on to him, people perceive what their minds expect to see. Typically Roan takes on the characteristics of how a person views themselves, he mirrors. Think of Roan as the living version of ‘slightly psychic paper’, the basic features are all there but minor details like eye colour, hair shade or shape of face get filled in by the viewer subconsciously. Roan’s attractiveness, approachability etc. all come from the mood of the viewer, and he may very well look slightly different to everyone viewing him. This is fluid so the next time you met Roan he may look different depending on your mood. Despite this fluidic appearance, it is not up to him how he is perceived by an individual, but the viewer will always instinctively know who he is.
If a bright light hits Roan’s eyes the light shines back, like a mirror behind his pupils.
Personality Description: Again this is subject to his biology. As a mirror, Roan’s personality is strongly influenced by those immediately around him. This means his allegiances, inclinations towards good or evil are a reflection of the dominant person in the room. Taking an example, if Roan was next to a child on a sugar-high, Roan would be bouncy, hyper and fun-loving. If Roan visited an institution for the clinically insane, he may start to wonder how that nice nurse lady tastes with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. This reflective personality also applies to the supernatural, in the presence of a demon without a stronger ‘good’ anchor, Roan would become demonically inclined. On the other hand a powerful good could sway him into angelic wrath/mercy depending on the attitude of the anchor.
This fluidic personality is something Roan struggles with daily. He can’t help but reflect the world around him back at itself, and has left him with strong identity issues. Who really is he? Does he even count as an individual? If he was left on his own, would he cease to exist?
Assuming no dominating outside interference, at a basic level Roan is…well blank. Neutral. He enjoys quiet relaxation with a book and a coffee. He is naturally curious about every aspect of the world around him and fairly friendly. Roan generally tends to be quite non-committal, preferring very much to live in the here and now, the moment. After all, in the next five minutes ‘who he is’ right now could vanish in a flash of light on glass. An avid listener of music and latest movie releases, Roan’s tastes encompass the whole spectrum of genres, he likes the ability to ‘choose’ his own mood via media. Similar to the transient nature of, well himself, Roan tends to be a control freak in every aspect of his life that he feels he can control. As such, Roan is hyper-organised and excessively clean, everything polished, gleaming and in its proper place.
In terms of socialising, Roan is as always dependent on those he is with but as a result of this it can be hard to form true friendships. After all, would you trust someone who could ‘mirror’ your worst enemy if they got a little too close?
Powers:
Mirror Manipulation: The major power of Roan’s species. Roan’s reflection is self-aware and independent of Roan, but at all times under his control. It is not unusual for Roan’s reflection to scratch its nose, smile, sit up while he sleeps or go for a walk into another mirror…If you have ever looked at your reflection and sworn your reflection is looking…actually looking back at you, that is one of Roan’s species ‘pretending’ to be your reflection. Perhaps you have seen a silhouette in the background of your mirror but when you turn around there is nothing there, that is a mirror Fae dropping by for a look. This in itself makes spying on people from any reflective surface exceptionally easy, although by far from the most sinister use of this power.
You see, the true nature of mirror manipulation is that which is done to a person’s reflection is mirrored onto the person. A famous, albeit gruesome example of this is ‘Bloody Mary’ who was a mirror Fae that liked to butcher the reflections of and thus the people who dared call her name in any mirror three times. The limitation of this power is that people cannot be affected if they cannot see their reflection.
The final extent of mirror manipulation is the ability to control what people see in their reflections. Roan can use any reflective surface as a looking glass to show anyone what is on the other side of any other reflective surface. Alternatively he could ‘take control’ of their reflection and show them their deepest desires (NB: Side note a mirror Fae trapped somewhere in Scotland used this a means to enthrall those who looked into its glass.) or their greatest nightmares. Whether what you see is true or not is up to the Fae…
It is possible to use reflective surfaces as a form of gateway transport, instantaneously disappearing from one location and stepping out in another but Roan does not know how to use this ability and won’t for the duration of the RP (unless a mod thinks it would be good for a particular plot but this seemed way OP for general use).
This is how mirror Fae are summoned by speaking their name three times in a mirror, but Roan would only be aware that a person is calling him.
Self-fulfilling Prophecy: As a mirror, Roan can only bring about that which people release into the world. As a result of the popularity of superstitions, Roan can influence the real world when conditions are met, i.e. making people’s beliefs real. Say you walk under a ladder, Roan can use the ‘spark’ of energy the belief associated with such an act releases to actually place a minor jinx on the careless wanderer. A jinx is just a run of bad luck e.g. losing your phone, car not starting, falling down stairs, catching the flu etc. The flip side of this is good superstitions apply too, knock wood three times and Roan could give you a streak of good luck, find a penny and more fortune will find its way to you etc.
Provided the individual believes enough, Roan can make their beliefs tangible e.g. nightmare fighting teddy bears or lucky socks on exam day or dud ‘protection amulets’ will work. The caveat with this is people have to believe it with their heart and soul, Roan can’t just magic up luck and jinxes. The individual provides the power, Roan just makes it real.
Example: My character is not superstitious, therefore if they ‘step on a crack’ can Roan jinx them? Provided they are utterly confident in their disbelief it is unlikely Roan could successfully jinx them, there is no ‘spark’ to shape. However, something like ‘stepping on a crack’ is a well known superstition, so if there is any wiggle room in their minds, Roan can use the collective belief in the world to complete the jinx. Add to this, if you knew a superstition could be made real, it would take an exceptionally strong mind to not re-assign superstitions as possible, thus opening them up to the jinx.
Caveat: The only curse Roan can cast is when an individual breaks a mirror while able to see their reflection. Regardless of personal belief the act of shattering a mirror in sight of your reflection guarantees seven years bad luck, potentially fatal in severity. Similarly, Roan can cast constant jinxes on Friday the 13th due to the strength of humanities’ collective belief.
Power Effect: This is not a power Roan has any control over, it is simply a fact of his biology. Any individual with enough command over their own powers to channel them through Roan could double their power, in essence using Roan to reflect their powers, a “mirror imageâ€. Roan cannot stop this, or bestow it. Again the power and control comes from the individual, not Roan. Roan could be forced to double a power that is actively being used to kill him. This aspect of mirror Fae make them a popular target of other supernatural beings who would abuse this ability.
Biography: Roan is a mirror Fae. Mirror Fae are borne when a human dies violently in sight of their reflection. Rather than passing on, an imprint of the person is retained in the mirror, bestowing consciousness. The Fae is then free to leave the mirror, but will retain no knowledge of their prior life.
Originally Roan was a 25 year old man named Michael McIlwrath who was murdered in 17th century Ireland by his brother. As a Fae he caused minor trouble and the odd streaks of god fortune for over three hundred years before a powerful witch cursed him into a stillborn baby, Dominic Young on June 27th 1990. Roan lost all memory of being a Fae, the witch’s curse blocking all aspects of the supernatural from his life. On holiday in Scotland for his 23rd birthday, “Dominic†was bitten by a werewolf causing the witch’s curse to try to seal both the Fae and the wolf. Instinctively re-asserting his true nature, Roan ‘fed’ the wolf to the curse, thereby freeing his Fae side once more. Losing all memory of his life as Dominic, and with all memory of his previous life as a mirror Faye previously destroyed by the witch, Roan chose the name ‘Roan Doe’ and decided to start over.
