Banana Bread? Check.

Pillows? Check.

Moana file downloaded onto his computer? Checkity check.

Wei was ready for movie night.

It had been a while since he and Hal had sat around and watched movies together. While they had kept in contact the last few months, they hadn't really spent any significant time together. Sometimes they talked over the phone, and Wei would make plans, but things would come up in the last moments and they wouldn't actually see each other.

But now it was time. Wei'd gotten his little grubby hands on a copy of Moana, and Hal had acquiesced to their first movie night in a while, and he was going to enjoy spending time with one of his best buddies in the whole wide world.

He took the steps two at a time, and pushed his room's door open, setting the still-warm banana bread on his bed. Blankets? Right, he had blankets.

Really, there was no reason or him to be so excited. It wasn't like Hal would judge him too much for his slightly cluttered room.

"Alright... everything is ready."

Alright. He was ... gonna do this. A week ago he told himself he was going to stop avoiding people and actually show up. Wei was one of the few people Hal kept in contact with when he started dodging social responsibilities. He needed to get his shit together first but there were a few people he could trust enough to keep in contact when he felt alone. Wei just happened to be one of them, and while he felt a bit guilty having to hide his depression from any of his closest friends he couldn't imagine dragging Wei into one of his existential bullcrap.

Thing is, Hal was just a few steps away from Wei's door when the panic sunk in. While the thing with Claire went okay in the end, it wasn't all smooth going when he'd tried to explain himself. The last few months were spent avoiding having to see be around people in extended periods and he just finally agreed to push through with movie night. What if... Wei was actually really upset with him all this time? No, no, no, stop. Don't think like that. This is Wei. He'd understand.

Psyching himself up a last time, he skipped forward to the monkey boy's room, already left open. He knocked on the door, leaning in just past the doorframe with the most decent smile he could muster. "Knock, knock? We all set already?".

Wei was the kind of person who knew that things happened. Sometimes the things that you loved to do became difficult to handle, and the people you wanted to see and loved the most suddenly became impossible to stomach. Last year he had a complete meltdown in the middle of the club festival and everyone saw him just lose all sense of his surroundings until everything was too much and he had to hide and cry under a desk in a dusty classroom.

There was no way anyone would want him on student council again after that, and he didn't even bother. It was a shame, though, that he'd never gotten the chance to thank Morgan for helping him before she left to be an adult in the real world.

He looked up, hearing the soft knock and his friend. Wei threw his arms into the air and jumped, almost launching himself at Hal before he brain fully processed that maybe throwing his full body weight at someone who was only a little bit taller than himself and probably weighed only a few pounds more.

He managed to stop himself by flailing wildly and ended up on his face instead.

"I'm up! I'm fine. Everything is fine. HAAAAAL, ITS BEEN SO LOOOOONG!"

Seeing Wei's happy face and his overexcited flailing eased a little bit of Hal's anxieties away. The last few days were probably more than just anxiety-filled, what with trying to make peace with his personal demons and also patching up with a few friends. In all honestly he was expecting a full-on tackle hug from him, but even he knew he'd probably topple over anyway and probably break something; that was yet another thing he'd remember to thank him for.

Hal let a grin spread over his face, while he lightly pushed Wei's face away from his with a finger on his nose. "Yes, I can see you're up and about. My glasses are new enough to see that," he said jokingly as he leaned over the doorframe. ""And yeah, sorry about missing out for a while. I got real busy trying to catch up on school work, you know?" He shrugged. It was no lie; he did have a lot to make up for in school -- it was his last year in high school after all. He couldn't afford to be held back if his parents were to be his judge. Though he was sure some people would have different ideas about it.

His eyes moved a little past Wei into the room, trying to look at what the little monky had set up or the two of them, before turning back to him, "So what's the plan for tonight, ol' buddy?"

"No its alright, I get it!" Wei said, nodding more than was probably necessary. "School is important, no doubt about it. You're smart and all, and gonna graduate..." Really, he would pout but he had no reason to. The only thing that would happen is Hal would transfer from the high school to the college, and he'd still only be a few texts and strolls away. He couldn't imagine living anywhere else, where a college could be miles and miles away.

His little heart wouldn't be able to handle the distance.

But luckily he didn't have to live in a world like that, and his buddy would be around for four more years, probably!

Rubbing his hands together, he gestured to his laptop and his comfy setup of blankets, pillows, and banana bread. "I figured we could use a good movie, so I got Moana! It's so good, I've watched it like fifty times, it always makes me cry."

Wei wiped a nonexistent tear from his cheek.

Hal wasn't sure if he was thinking too much into it, or the way Wei seemed to be acting made him a little anxious. Overthinking, too much overthinking, he scolded himself. He needs to do something with that; him worrying too much was what got him into that mess in the first place.

Hal's gaze followed Wei's hands to the inside of his room where he already had everything set up. He was about to ask something about the movie, not having seen it before since isolation until something clicked to him. "Wait, hold on, fifty?" Unbelievable. Hal stared at him with wide eyes, "Wei, you're not allowed to spoiler me in the middle of the movie," he commanded, looking rather serious than the situation could allow.

Wei hand flew to his chest, his face turning into a picture of offended indignation. "Hal! Do you really think I would be so rude as to spoil a cinematic masterpiece? That would be horrid!"

He gestured intensely at his little pillow and blanket nest, making sure to leave space for Hal next to him. All he would do is glance over and see how Hal liked all the emotional moments and plot twists in the story, because he needed to know what his friends thought about the things he liked to watch.

"Let's go Hal, are you just gonna stand there or are you gonna watch Moana with me?"

Hal struggled to keep a straight face in front of that display, trying to keep the dignified air but after a small twitch of his lips, he burst into chuckles, lightly punching Wei on the shoulder for the good laugh. "'Course you wouldn't. So I brought a few snacks too in case there wouldn't be enough," he said, patting the bag slung over to his side.

Turning Wei around by the shoulders, Hal lighty shoved him back into the room,

"So well, I obviously didn't come here to just stand around here, did I? let's go, let's go!" Hal closed the door with his foot after them, making a little noise from it slamming back into the frame but Hal barely even flinched as he ushered his friend into their little nest.

Hal followed after him into the pile of pillows, pulling out a couple of containers of oatmeal bars, crisps with dips inside before snuggling comfortably in his seat until he was settled. "All set! Ready when you are."

Wei went back into his room and dropped onto his blankets and pillows with a light sound of effort. He smoothed out his skirt and picked up a bottle of water while Hal got comfortable. Once they were both settled, he reached over and tapped the button on his laptop to start the movie. The familiar Disney logo came on, as the movie opened properly.

The whole time, Wei sat with his legs crossed and a slice of banana bread in front of him on a napkin, internally mouthing along to every line said by the characters as he guessed how Hal would enjoy each moment as it unfolded in front of him.

Perhaps it was because they hadn't seen each other for a while, but Hal's distinct lack of reaction didn't seem all that strange to the monkey. Perhaps he'd somehow fooled himself into thinking that this was just how Hal had always been, even though he knew that wasn't the case at all.

Hal would be lying if he said the movie wasn't remotely interesting, he'd be lying if he said the music wasn't great, or if he said the screenplay was bad, or if he said the script was terrible. But no matter how much he tried, the longer the movie went on, the lack of other thoughts playing in his mind made room for bad thoughts.

He figured actually talking might help and he threw a few random ones under his breath, just enough for Wei to hear. He gave quiet chuckles a few times, saying how he liked Moana's grandmother, that Maui was a grade A jerk, making fun of the chicken a few times; neither he nor Wei seemed to think it was anything off about his voice sounding a little lifeless.

Hal was almost convinced he was going be fine for the rest of the movie but it was a little midway when he just... stopped talking. If Wei turned to look at him, Hal was just staring off into space, barely even looking at the screen anymore. He was just absentmindedly chewing into the slice of bread.
