Starlight Academy was really cool in that it housed students from preschool to grad school. It was really quite an interesting crowd, and when you paired that with the fact that almost all of these students were vampires, ghosts, cyborgs, zombies, fae, elves, aliens, spatial anomaly, or any other manner of supernatural being, things started to get crazy.

Walking back from her power training classes, Matilda passed by most of the buildings in the college, and so got plenty of chance to see all sorts of things. She could have always cut across the lawn and gotten back to the dorms a lot quicker, but this way was far more interesting, and it helped her to unwind and ease her mind as she reflected on her training.

Today had been a disappointment. After the fiasco with her attempted demon summoning, Tilly was still struggling with the act of cramming information into her tiny skull. Some Wizards could do it effortlessly, with as many as twenty spells, all at once. Matilda had needed to cheat by enchanting items and brewing potions with similar effects, but a true master of the arcane arts could do it all with their will alone. Yet, try as she might, she couldn’t quite get herself to cram any more spells into her head. She felt like a cup that was overflowing, or a balloon, ready to burst.

She was flipping through a flimsy, leather-bound book as she was walking, titled Catalog Dæmoniorum. Inside, sigils and illustrations depicted all sorts of things that could kill you in all sorts of ways. Wish-granting demons, those who would trade your soul for power, those who could give you eternal life if only you sacrificed your firstborn. Standard fare.

She was looking for a new source of insight. As her last attempt had been a disaster, and attacking her studies with brute force seemed to be ineffectual, she had resorted to this. As if a warning had been sent down from the heavens themselves, a gust of wind suddenly caught her, sending random pages from the ancient text flying through the air, carpeting the ground in ancient sigils of long-forgotten demons and outsiders.

”Zounds!”

Another uneventful school day had come and past. Lately, things in Loralei’s life have been mundane. Which, for someone who couldn’t handle the hustle and bustle of the MC islands, it was a welcome relief. But Loralei was weird. She hated ordinary. If the days started to melt together, that was a problem.

Being a genie, Loralei thrived off excitement. But since she had no need to grant wishes anymore, she just did as she pleased. Which was both a blessing and a curse. He hated being bossed around, but at the same time, it was nice to be able to do whatever whacky thing someone desired upon a whim. She loved testing the limit of her magic. And lately it seemed there was little reason to do that.

Currently, she was hanging in a nearby tree overlooking the campus promenade. She liked to people watch, but she didn’t wanna be a creep about it. Nothing interesting here either. Ho hum.

Suddenly however a young woman came storming through the walkway below her. Loralei leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees. She could sense a great deal of magic stemming from her.

Almost as if it were planned, suddenly the notes she had been carrying spilled everywhere. She would have brushed it off and perhaps helped if she truly looked as if she were struggling, but these were no ordinary notes. Even from a distance, she saw sigils scribbled all over them. And they didn’t look friendly.

Well, there was her cue.

"You know, written spells never really were my thing. But something tells me these aren’t your grandma’s sigils." The voice came from the young woman who was now standing on the cobblestone, the heel of her thigh high-boot catching a sheet from blowing away. In a quick motion she did a double-clap if her hands and suddenly a giant broom and dustpan appeared. Without her assistance the pages were swept up and arranged in a neat pile. With a whisk of her hand the papers were teleported to her, and the broom and dustpan disappeared in a cloud of smoke.

"I believe these are yours."

As she had been saying, Starlight Academy was really cool in that when you drop your papers, there’s a pretty good chance someone will appear out of nowhere and magic them back together for you. Her arms clasped around the papers, quickly rearranging them and stuffing them back into her book, before dropping it into her leather pack with a dull thud. She moved with speed and efficiency, partly because she was concerned for the constitution of the pages, and partly because she was embarrassed of the contents. For Matilda’s pride, this was the equivalent of getting caught cheating on a test in a subject one held a doctorate in.

Still, Tilly had some humor left in her. ”You’ve never met my grandmas, then.” She grinned, a flicker of mischief in her eyes. Sure, grandma Blackstone would probably object to the summoning of demons for personal gain, but grandma Dierich would definitely understand. ”Thank you, by the way.” She added hastily, not wanting to be rude.

As she slung the backpack back over her shoulder, she fixed her hat anxiously, her expression apologetic. ”I’m just, uh, looking at those. My interest is purely academic.” She explained, lying through her teeth pretty badly. She wasn’t too good at this. She seemed to realize this, and decided it was better to just minimize the damage. ”Though the idea of flirting with that sorta power is undeniably interesting. Sometimes I wish I could have a taste of what they could give me. I definitely don’t wanna tango with demons, though.” She said darkly, remembering the last time she’d done so. ”I’m Tilly, by the way. Are you a practitioner?” She asked, looking dumbly up to the tree and offering a hand to shake.

She chuckled. Looking at her, it was obvious she was a witch. Well, giant pointy hat aside. She could tell she was a struggling practitioner and today was not her day. Now this could be interesting.

"Don’t mention it." She said, brushing her deed off. Besides, it was no skin off her back.

Immediately, she could tell she was lying. She was used to deception, and knew how to play the game herself if needed. Still, usually when people lied, they had at least some reason. And in this case, it was easy to piece two and two together. If these simile weren’t for slightly dubious purposes, what was the point of the hustle to get them back together.

She laughed, putting a hand on her hip while the other was on her lips. "Hey, I ain’t no snitch. You’re cool with me." She said, smirking. Though, even she admitted that there was a strong temptation. There always was. Temptation was a powerful, powerful thing.

Then, those words came up.

”I wish”

She had to stop herself from her sideways smile from turning into a full on grin. Now now… Maybe this was what she needed.

She floated to her, meeting her eye-to-eye as she extended out her hand. "Loralei. Or Lori, whatevs. Pleased to make your acquaintance, Tilly." When she asked her status as a magical being, she simply twirled a silver finger in her inky black hair. "I guess you could say that..." She snapped her fingers again, her tiny teapot appearing in a poof of smoke in the palm of her open hand. "I’m a djinn. Or in normie terms, a genie."

She seemed pretty cool about the whole demon summoning thing. She hardly cared about the moral dubiousness of her studies, and said as much. Matilda’s smile was growing, more and more, just from general growing levels of comfort, even though the woman hadn’t said much of anything besides helping her and assuring her she’d not be tattling on her.

Then, something seemed to change. A noticeable shift in her demeanor occurred, and as she drifted down towards Tilly, her smile faltered a bit, growing just a hair more nervous. Not at the floating, she’d seen plenty of that from Diego since she’d gotten here, but more just the strange, knowing smile. The woman introduced herself as Loreli, or Lori. Then, that teapot appeared, and Matilda understood why she’d been smiling.

”Woah.” She said simply, her eyes growing wide. ”Like the one in Buffy or the one in Aladdin?” She asked stupidly, still a little dumbfounded.

Loralei laughed. That was a new one. "Buffy eh? Didn’t think people still watched that." She folded her legs as she floated in mid air, leaning against an invisible recliner. "Anyway, yes. You could say that. I’m just a little less… Fictional."

She held her teapot in her hand, gesturing to it. "What you see is merely a projection of this here teapot. It’s supposed to be a lamp but uh, they were out of stock." She looked at her as she explained. "I can conjure up just about anything, shapeshift, and float around like its nothing." She grinned. "But my most requested feat is wish-granting. I give three wishes to whoever I deem as my master. Minus a few limitations, it could be just about anything."

She put her hand on her hip. "But, miss pop culture, I suppose you already knew that, right?"

The fact that Loralei hadn’t said which sort of genie she was might have caused Matilda some distress if she wasn’t being so gosh darn nice about it. What could she say? Matilda was a sucker for a kind stranger and their offers of power. That was practically how she’d become a wizard, after all. She might have defended Buffy and its appeal if she weren’t so dumbfounded at the actual Djinn that was offering her… Was she offering her wishes?

So Loralei was the type of Djinn that could choose to whom she grants her wishes. And it sounded an awful lot like she was willing to do the same for Matilda…
”Wow.” She said again, dumbly.

”...What limitations?” She’d ask, trying to make it seem as though it were an innocent thing. ”I’m sure ‘Three more wishes’ is out of the question.”

When asked about her limitations of her powers, she grinned. Usually that was the second item on the list prospective wish granters was just how far her powers extended. And while she didn’t want to admit her faults to a total stranger, she had to be frank. Not like she wanted to do something totally dangerous, anyway.

"Yeah, that’s the biggest one." she said, shrugging a bit. "But of course, there’s more. I’m a bit rusty though so lemme get a bit of a refresher..."

In a whisk of her hand a large, golden book appeared. It opened in her hand for her to flip as she hummed herself a bit of a song until she got to the right page. "AHA! Here it is. The rules." She cleared her throat.

"1) No necromancy. Can’t bring back old aunt Bessie, but I can conjure up her old red velvet cake recipe. 2) Thou shalt not harm. I can’t be complicit in any murder or direct injury. Not like I wanna be, cuz I can’t exactly poof myself out of a felony. 3) I can’t play Cupid. If you wanna find Mr/Ms/Mx right, it can’t be through me. And 4) I can’t make grandiose changes to the world. No ending war, hunger, or sadness. That’s just beyond my pay grade." She closed the book in one hand, which in turn disappeared in a cloud of smoke. "Oh, and. Duh. No asking for more wishes."

She started to back away. That’s all she was obligated to disclose, after all. "So yeah. Besides that, I could potentially go nuts. But uh…that’s only if I get a master. And it’s been a long, long time since I’ve gotten a new one."
