"Well, yes and no. It's pretty much like normal high school. You take your math, science, language courses. You get two free electives and at the end of the day, there's an optional powers class you can take. It's just as it sounds; you get to practice your abilities with teachers and safety precautions." Ellyn grinned here and pointed to her head, "I rarely take that. I have a mental shield, so there isn't much practice needed. It tends just to work on its own."
Ellyn paused, letting Akane catch all that before she continued. "If you just got here a day ago, you'll probably have a few days before you start classes, but if you're really worried about it, you can head over to the administration's office to get yourself sorted out."
She pulled a backpack from her feet and searched through it, tongue prodding the inside of her cheek. "Here, I still have my pamphlet about the place." After saying that, Ellyn pulled out a manual and set it on the table in front of Akane.
She listened to Ellyn carefully, nodding from time to time to show that she was fully focused on her words. "I see..." Akane spoke in the end, taking the manual offered to her.
"So it's basically a normal high school with some minor exceptions" she summarized it as she started turning pages of the manual.
She studied it for a short while and then closed it letting out a heavy sigh.
"Lucky you Ellyn! I'll surely have to take power class on regular basis, since my powers are still unstable... Well now that we are at it, what kind of powers do you possess, if I may ask? And oh, by the way, do you know what kind of creature I am?" she giggled, thinking of something.

"Basically," Ellyn laughed. "But if they promoted it like that I think they'd have a lot less traffic coming in. If you haven't been to the city yet, though, things are crazy different down there. On school grounds we can't really use our magic and everything is safe and contained, but in the city it's...different. a good different."
Ellyn smiled a bit strenuously. "It's both lucky and unlucky around here. This place has a lot of predators, no two-ways about it, and being almost human -- as I am -- can be a dangerous thing." Now she inspected Akane closer. "Well, you're dressed in Japanese attire and have a Kitsune mask, so I'm going to assume Kitsune. If not that, then I wouldn't know. As for me, I have a mental shield. Mental attacks don't tend to do much to me, but I'm not safe from everything. It's a good defensive power unless someone attacks me head on, then I'm screwed."
'A defensive power which can protect her from all kinds of mental attacks, unless they're totally unexpected? Nice! I guess my little prank wouldn't work if she actually knew I'll pull it.'
"So the city is a dangerous place, eh? Your mental shield must be very useful when you're visiting it! Hmmm... But... Are you sure that I am Kitsune?" she giggled again covering her lips with hands and using that as an opportunity to whisper the trigger word for her light spell. "I might be only wearing this mask for fun, right?" she said it with a smile aimed to reveal her two 'newly acquired' pointed teeth.
"So the city is a dangerous place, eh? Your mental shield must be very useful when you're visiting it! Hmmm... But... Are you sure that I am Kitsune?" she giggled again covering her lips with hands and using that as an opportunity to whisper the trigger word for her light spell. "I might be only wearing this mask for fun, right?" she said it with a smile aimed to reveal her two 'newly acquired' pointed teeth.
"I wouldn't say it's outright dangerous, but there are more predators than there would be in the 'real world.' And my shield doesn't help with physical assaults." She paused and watched Akane, eyes narrowed in thought. They widened when she saw the two sharp canine teeth.
Vampire? That was what it seemed like, but maybe it was something Ellyn had never heard of before? Her smile was a little strained now. Things with sharp teeth were things that usually had super strength and a craving for flesh or blood. "Oh, my. I hadn't seen those before. So, uh, vampire then?"
"I might be, right?" She winked. " But no, I'm not. This is only my power - I can create illusion of anything you can imagine and I wanted to show it to you."
She said the neutralizing word and her fake teeth disappeared. "But you noticed well, I am a kitsune. Actually half-kitsune, see? No fox ears, nor tails yet." She pointed to her head.
"Anyway, I'm sorry if my joke wasn't all that funny. I used to see people pulling pranks on each other often at my previous high school. It seemed like they were having fun doing that, so... I just wanted to try it too..."
Her eyes saddened a bit as she remembered how lonely she was at that time.

"Oh," Ellyn giggled a hint, her shoulders relaxing. She hadn't even noticed they had tensed up. "Sorry. I mean, it was a good joke, I just didn't expect it is all. No, illusions and glamour can still work on me." She winked. "My power is seeming less and less cool, ain't it?"
"No, no, not at all!" She waved her hand in denial. "There are so many other mental powers which can't harm you when you activate it, so I think it's a really useful defensive power. I have non of the sort. My illusions neither protect me, nor make damage to the opponent, and the only other power I have is new to me and I can't make much use of it... So when I'm in danger, I can only count on my instincts and think of the most suitable way of getting out of it unharmed."
Akane was having fun just chatting about random stuff, but she soon remembered that wasn't the main purpose of their visit to the library.
"By the way, what have you been reading before I came? I mean, apart from the book about Manta Carlos?" She glanced at the big pile of books that Ellyn had picked.

"Oh," Ellyn said, looking to her books. She took a few off her pile and showed them to Akane. "Mostly stuff on the island and about magic. The Viel, Magical Theory, spells, Manta Carlos laws and punishments." Then she smiled and held up the book she'd been reading when Akane walked over, "and some young adult fiction when I got bored."
Akane opened her notebook quickly and wrote down some of the titles Ellyn has mentioned. "It seems like you're a very dedicated student. And I can also tell that you love reading. You've been so absorbed in it when I came that I felt really sorry to stop you... What is that one about?" Akane pointed to the book she held up.
