Art by Oasis
William Brown is to all outward appearances a normal human male. His skin is fair and his short brown hair and brown eyes suit his name. At 5'5 he appears a bit short, but this was an average height for men of his time. He has a slender build, but is still much lighter than he looks - only 25 pounds. He has a physical form and feels human to the touch, although slightly clammy. But his flesh is not flesh, rather a lightweight substance similar to ectoplasm, which is also incredibly low-density.
William usually appears to be in his late 20's, the same age he was when he died, but will age the longer he goes without feeding. He has the distinct smell of death, easily detectable to anyone with a good sense of smell. If you paid attention, you'd notice his feet never actually touch the ground.
When not wearing his doctor's uniform, William prefers to wear his Victorian outfit, but will occasionally wear modern suits. He doesn't do casual. He usually wears gloves to avoid temptation when in company.
He carries himself like a respectable gentleman should and is generally polite and soft-spoken. He is not given to theatricality or expressiveness, tending to be neutral in expression in body language, with cold, dead eyes.
Personality Description:
It is sometimes hard to see the doctor's personality through the damage of the demon's possession. He is a very moral, proper man, still stuck in Victorian notions of respectability, who will sometimes try to be generous or kind out of a sense of duty, but is incapable of genuine love. Unwaveringly polite, this mask is the one thing he can cling to, a sort of lifeline. He has a very particular idea of what is proper and is quite distressed when things are not in order, especially when it comes to his own feelings and behavior. His emotions have been simplified to the point where the only ones he is able to feel are fear, anger, lust, and depression. When he does feel any of these, he feels them intensely, but otherwise just feels numb. He cannot find a middle ground and as such his self-control is almost nil. The fact that Maria is completely in control of these emotions does not help, and even without her manipulation the wraith is emotionally volatile. He has no sense of humor or positive feelings towards anyone, but can dimly remember them, so clings to what he can, trying to soothe his conscience by making others feel better.
William is torn between fear and regret, but always too late. Driven by his cravings to kill, he has broken the law and even his own morals time and time again. But he is not open about this, certainly not proud. He still prefers to prey on the dying and depressed, and will not harm a child if he can avoid it. Morality, like notions of propriety, is a trapping of life that he holds fiercely, though he is quite aware that it is at best a pathetic cover. Since being on the island, he has been made aware just how fragile a cover it is, but he still can't quite bring himself to dying, even though that may be the only easy to escape. Very aware of his physical vulnerability, he does not like to touch or be touched, and is especially nervous around taller men.
He is somewhat of a masochist, since pain is the only feeling he knows Maria can't manipulate, and because part of him feels he should be punished. The demoness is one thing he won't bring up on his own, and he never calls her by her chosen name. Even after more than a century he grieves his wife, as corrupted as that grief might be.
Active Abilities:
Feeding -
Feeds by draining life through his hands. Requires hand to skin contact and leaves bright red handprints which do not fade. Can feed from any sentient being with blood, except demons/half-demons in demon form/angels/any degree of angelic blood/other holy beings. Takes roughly 15 minutes of sustained contact to kill a healthy human adult, longer for hardier people/powerful beings, less to kill someone already ill or dying. Feeding is painless to the victim, but weakens them and makes them drowsy and light-headed. Can cause heart attacks in a person with a weak heart. The wraith will have a death grip while feeding, but is still no stronger than an average human and could easily be pulled off. He is also completely vulnerable. Any interruption means he'd have to start again.
Even if the wraith doesn't kill his victims, they will still be tired and dizzy for a while afterwards, depending on how long he was draining them. The feeding also tends to lower people's immune systems for a few days after.
Doesn't need to kill when feeding, but mentally unable to stop once started unless pulled away. Even a minute of feeding is enough to count with regards to aging and fading away, and will reverse the effects of not feeding. But bulk of energy comes from victim's death and death is needed to stop psychological cravings for a time. An immortal's death will not stop cravings, a young/healthy person might lessen for a day or two.
The longer William goes without feeding, the quicker he ages. The first few days it might be a year a day, then longer and it's three or four years a day, and so on. He begins to lose substance after a week of no feeding until he'd eventually fade away after around a month. This is a physical fading, he'd still appear solid, but would be incorporeal before he faded completely. But his cravings also increase with time to the point where if he accidentally brushed against someone he'd start draining them. Draining is the only time he feels some sort of release.
Limited Teleportation - If someone is feeling fear and no one is watching him, including the victim, he can instantly teleport in front of them to a distance of 25 feet. This increases his hunger and is equivalent to a day without feeding.
Passive Abilities:
Senses Weakness - He can taste illness (mental such as mood/anxiety disorders and physical such as disease/virus/colds) and fear within 25 feet. Each one (mental, physical, fear) tastes slightly distinct, but he couldn't tell anything specific or their strength. These tastes draw him, he wants to be close to the source, but he doesn't feed from them or gain any benefit. This is a constant ability.
Wraith Body - Undead. Immortal, ageless. Doesn't require air, food, or sleep. Regenerates almost instantly from physical harm and immune to poison/disease/ambient temperature. He still feels pain, especially from fire, though he is not permanently damaged by it, and he is unable to pass out from pain.
His body is not flesh, but a solid ectoplasm-like substance that mimics it. He has no actual internal organs or blood, and cannot cry, sweat, or blush, but does still feel sensations. When experiencing intense anger/lust, skin becomes noticeably hot to touch, but not enough to burn. His feet don't quite touch the ground, but he cannot hover more than half an inch above it. He cannot hover over water either. He still wears the outfit he died in but can make it vanish/appear at will. He can wear normal clothes as long as he's still mostly there - ie for about two weeks of no feeding.
Aura of uneasiness - This aura is rather weak, but constant. Within five feet, people get the sense that there's something off about the wraith. They might be more prone to notice how dead his eyes are or see his grin as sinister. This is not fear, but more similar to disgust. Shaking hands with him would be uncomfortable, like a bug crawling up your spine.
Weaknesses:
Demon-possessed - William is possessed by the succubus known as Maria, who delights in tormenting him. If Maria were to leave him, whether through her own free will or via banishment/summoning/destruction, he would die permanently. He can communicate with her telepathically whether she is in or out of his body. He also cannot block her when she wishes to talk to him, which she often takes advantage of. He cannot control her in any way; she acts of her own free will. He feels whatever pain she feels when she is out. She cannot control him physically, including using his powers, but she can and does manipulate his emotions. When she uses her powers, it weakens him and increases his desire to feed. When she takes form outside of his body, he feels five minutes of sharp pain all over.
Physically weak, about half the strength of an average human male. He cannot move faster than a slow jog and could be blown over by a strong gust of wind. Only weighs 25 lbs, so is easy to fight off, carry, or trap.
He can be harmed by magic specifically targeted to undead or demonic beings. He shares Maria's vulnerability to holy objects.
Biography:
In the 1850's, the middle of the Victorian age, William was a young, well-respected physician. Although he was entirely human, he was born with some powers, a trick of genetics, but was not open about them. His healing abilities manifested young, but they were not very strong and were easy to hide. He didn't discover his teleportation ability until much later when he used it to rescue a person attempting suicide. Fortunately, no-one was around to witness this. He has retained his teleportation ability since his death, but his healing powers have been irrevocably corrupted/overridden by the wraith's life drain.
The doctor had a good career and a loving wife. Things appeared to be going well and he was even about ready to start a family. But the happiness did not last. His wife caught a fatal case of smallpox, and even William's powers could not save her. In his grief, he threw himself into his work. But now he just saw the suffering everywhere and all the people he couldn't heal.
Enter Maria. Pretending to be the ghost of his dead wife, the demon-in-disguise told William that she was kept from rest because of the pain she saw. She claimed she was beyond help now, but she wished that he would ease the pain of his patients instead of trying to prolong their lives. He fought at first, determined to save someone, but when a pregnant woman about Maria's age died of the same disease, he faltered. At first he just prescribed extra drugs to people already dying. Then he began to euthanize the elderly as well. He had some regrets, but Maria was convincing him he was doing the right thing.
Then he administered the drug to a child with smallpox. He couldn't do it anymore. But he did not have the nerve to kill himself. The succubus convinced the grief-stricken man that she would kill him and bring him with her to limbo, if he would allow her to possess him. She assured him that being denied any rest would be punishment enough. So he accepted. To be fair she did kill him, but did this by turning him into a wraith.
At first, he fought his addictions. But the way he had been warped made this very difficult, and he was unused to the way Maria manipulated him, so he gave in easily. He eventually figured out he could wear gloves, but by then the damage was done. He was hooked to the limbo and it was a punishment.
As the years went by the demon-possessed wraith wandered, becoming colder and more calculated, slipping into a dark lust-hate relationship with his tormentor. He would stay in a town practicing as a doctor until people became suspicious or he simply got restless. He has attended medical school a few more times since he died, and also got a degree in psychiatry at one point. Still, most of his information comes from books, and more recently the internet.
Eventually, time brought him to Manta Carlos where he has set up his own practice. He has acquired some patients, killed or nearly killed some people and gotten handprints on a couple more, sort of made friends, and done research into his nature.
Resources: Lives in a small house and has his own doctor's office somewhere downtown. Currently making a modest income as a doctor. Has savings from working off and on as a doctor for the past 150+ years.

Deith - The demon raped him, fed from him, watched him feed, kidnapped him, and yet is the closest thing to a connection he has. Now he's more aware of his own powerlessness and has a tendency to be terrified of tall men, especially demonic or those that look similar. Also gets panicky when touched and has no idea how to deal with his own desires. Post AU he actually returned willingly - in search of feeling. Ended up having sex and then going out hunting. Really can't deal with his emotions.
Post-apocalyptic AU - He actually experienced being alive and happy again. He was able to laugh, in control of his own emotions, and not addicted to draining life. Then he had to come back - weakened his self-control and made him vulnerable.
Vapor - Ended up breaking his own moral code and draining a child. Hasn't killed a child since the last person he killed before his death. Now feels like he has lost his humanity and doesn't know whether to become a monster or die for real.
