Maarab shook his head, "Something along those lines has been suggested.." Though in the case of law enforcement, the one making the suggestion had very quickly corrected themself, saying it was a terrible idea. "There is no military on this island. I have checked. And leaving, ha, seems like it would be trouble. From what I have read, the human world is quite large."

Suddenly exhausted by this conversation, Maarab leaned back, keeping an eye on the angel. It was times like these he felt the full force of his brokenness. He could use a fight - physical pain was easier to deal with. "The police here, they are strange, a separate force only for enforcement and for laws that... there seems to be a lot of uneccessary laws. As if these people are trying to build structure with no leaders and failing. We did have some laws at home, and if you broke one a superior would teach you as many lessons as were needed to learn. Or execute you. Yet many actions were not covered because they bore their own consequences. Theft, for example. Here the victim is denied the ability to be in charge of their own vengeance, forced to lay it in another's hands. At home, there was no law against theft. Yet, a thief would fall into the hands of whoever it was they stole from. "

Sterling nodded. He understood. He really did. But he also understood that times changed, and angels also needed to change and adapt... which was a good part of why he stepped down from his celestial duties. How could he advocate against demons, when demons were beings who loved and cared for others just as they did?

"My dear friend, you mourn for what was lost and do not see what was left behind," Sterling said. "You say you do not have empathy yet I think you do. You just do not realise it yet. If you had no empathy you'd not worry. But you do. You strive to understand others and that says a lot." Sterling said.

"Empathy can be learned. You just need to be patient and more aware of those around you. When you see tears, what do you think? Or when someone laughs or smiles?" he asked calmly.

Maarab sank back into thought. As much as he wanted to know more, to learn, he just wanted to understand enough to return structure to his life. If he examined things too closely - what was he if he wasn't a weapon? Was everyone here so helpful because they had no leaders and felt as lost as he did when he actually thought about it?

"Ha! Well fighting is more simple, but this is a battle in its own right, is it not?" A sign of his mental exhaustion, Maarab actually closed his eye briefly, unconsciously covering his missing eye with his injured hand, a self-soothing gesture.

He had to think on how to answer the angel's question. Was empathy really just a matter of attention? That did not seem to be what was implied by others. Then again, if a person was neither attractive nor a threat, did he take notice? "I have little experience with tears. Even for myself, I do not believe I have cried from pain since I was a child or I was too distracted to notice. As for other people..." He frowns slightly, mutters, "I did not understand him." Louder, "Laughter is much more complex. I laugh because... I get caught by the edge of the world."
