Another nurse came to take Peter away. When she threw up, though, Nicolas grabbed her hand, worried. "Mery? Are you ok?" he asked quietly. He looked to another nurse who seemed rather worried.

"This shouldn't be happening..." she said quietly, quickly checking to make sure everything was alright.

Mery shook her head. It was getting harder to breathe. "Nick..." she said quietly. The beeps on the monitor started getting farther apart.

As the beeps got farther apart, Nicolas became alarmed. "Mery... no... you're not allowed to leave me!!" he shouted, tears in his eyes. He was thinking the worst, just like he always did. Oh, if only he could take her pain from her!

This was supposed to be a promise, not a hope. Pregnancy was supposed to give him a family, not take them away from him!

A small sob broke out. And, of course, the nurses weren't even doing anything. Nicolas looked to his wife again, kissing her forehead. "Come on, hang in there. You can make it," he encouraged softly, though he was shaking all over.

Mery shook her head. She touched his cheek gently. "No, Nick..." She whispered. "I love you..." The monitor flatlined and her hand fell limp.

"I love you too..." Nicolas said. As soon as the light went flat, Nicolas fell to his knees, unable to bear this all. He started sobbing and grabbed his dirty-blonde hair, unable to stop whimpering.

He had been so happy when he found out he was going to be a father. He had even started doing ballet moves and had bragged about it to everyone... was this punishment for it? Was this the punishment he got for being happy and wanting to have a family?

Eventually, a few nurses had to drag him out of the room. His only surviving child was handed to him and Nicolas stared down at the cheerful face, a small smile coming to him. He hadn't lost all of them, at least... he still had a fragment of his wife and his happy family left.

He kissed his child's head, holding him in his arms. "It's ok, Peter," he said softly.
