Lizzy

Lizzy was angry and a little confused at Rhett. She'd heard from a few old friends back home that there was a very good chance Rhett may have been gay. That wasn't the bad part, as Lizzy herself was BI. Lizzy was more confused as why Rhett hadn't told anyone. Especially when there was overwhelming evidence that he was.

No, she was angry because Rhett had gone and done the one thing he absolutely shouldn't have done. Almost break the veil. Sure, Trevor was an ass and deserved to get his ass beat, but Rhett had used his powers to do so, and now the scouts were crawling up their asses. Lizzy was already on thin ice as is, and she didn't need the scouts to have more reasons to monitor her.

So, once she'd heard Rhett was back on island, Lizzy had made her way over to his dorm. She wanted to hear things from Rhett himself. And, she wanted to find out if the rumors about him were true. Taking a deep breath, she gave a light knock on his door.

Well… It could be worse. Rhett wasn’t sent to the islets, the only threat that kept Rhett from throwing that punch a whole lot sooner. Still, he was in a lot of shit. For starters, he had one functional limb and it wasn’t even his dominant hand. His right wrist was fractured from trying to break the impact, it would take over a month to heal. Two legs were missing of course, but now one of them was cartoonishly bent up from the explosion. He’d have to use the running blade for a week until his new prosthetic was made. On top of that, he had a nasty concussion. Sure the constant nausea and headaches sucked, but the real icing on the cake was being unable to play any video games or really look at any screen for long. He was going to be stuck in his dorm for the next week with nothing besides a cage of rats to keep him company.

At least he had an excuse as to why he didn’t text the rest of the gang anything about what happened during his visit. Unfortunately they were informed that he broke the veil and caused a scene, mainly because they were now under the same travel restrictions as him. Eventually, he’d figure out some way to apologize for dragging them into this, but even thinking about coming face to face with any of them was incredibly nerve-wracking. When he heard the knock, Rhett just wanted to ignore it and go back to sleep. He hobbled over and cracked open the door just in case it was his dorm parent checking in on him.

“ Still nauseous, but you can tell my mom I’m ok.” He groggily mumbled attempting a thumbs up with his arm still in a cast. It was difficult looking his dorm parent in the eye after all Rhett put him through. When he did glance away from the floor, Rhett realized it was definitely not him.

“ Oh… hey Lizzy… I made it back.” Rhett said with some hesitation and wide eyes. Should have just pretended to be asleep. He thought to himself, but kept the door open anyways.

Lizzy tried and failed to cover a laugh when Rhett opened the door. While he may have normally been a walking fashion disaster, this was a new low, even for him. "Good god Rhett. You look like shit." She said as she headed inside his dorm.

"So, I heard about what happened. Back home, I mean. Scouts gave us all a rough rundown, so I called in a few favors from my old 'friends'." Lizzy explained with air quotes on friends. "Apparently, Trevor ended up in the hospital, and he's in pretty bad shape. Really didn't think you had that in you." She said with a smirk.

"Still, as much as that asshole deserved it, that's not why I'm here." Lizzy said, casting a glance towards Rhett's cast. "So, how are you holding up?"

“ And?” Rhett retorted then blew a strand of hair off his face. She wasn’t wrong about that, he did look like shit. He was quick to close the door after Lizzy entered the dorm, but struggled to make it back, dragging his one functional hand against the wall to guide him.

“ Yeah, that’s what I heard. Hope you didn’t make any plans to visit that hellhole for Labor Day... or Thanksgiving… hell, Christmas. It might be awhile.” Rhett said while adjusting his position, now cross-legged at the end of his bed. He avoided looking her directly in the eyes as he spoke. Even if someone did want to go back, his slip up set up miles of red tape for everyone involved.

“ Shit… it was that bad… he’s in the hospital?” He furrowed his brows. The asshole did deserve it, but with the size of that dent and if it was anyone else... Well, he had a power bracelet now.

“ Gonna be out of commission for a while, I think. Pretty lame way to spend the rest of the summer.” He raised up his cast, it was blue like his right eye.

“ Anyways, that doesn’t matter. I’m just screwed. How did you find out about Trevor? Is it just your shithead friends or do the others know too.” Rhett held his breath. “ How much do you know Lizzy?”

Lizzy

"If you're worried about Rowan and all them. Don't. They only know what the scouts told us." Lizzy said, Dela was the only one who seemed to keep in regular contact with back home, and even still, that was just her family. And Lizzy after the lake party, even that was up in the air.

"But, as far what I know, I heard about some rumors back home. Rumors about the funeral." Lizzy said with a smirk. "Things about Aubrey being a he, not a she. So I wanted to come ask you. Is it true? Are you actually gay?"

That’s good. Rhett let out a deep sigh, slumped against the wall. Lizzy was the last person he’d trust with anything, but she was the most connected, and even before he left for the narrow reality, Rhett knew anything about his visit would reach her one way or another. Nevertheless, it was still weird hearing it coming out of her mouth.

“ Straight to the point huh?” He scratched the back of his head. “ Well… Yeah. I'm mostly into guys.”

“ Most people just assume it’s a girl’s name. I never bothered to correct them. It was hard enough for my mom. It's easier to forget anything happened. You understand right?” Honestly, Lizzy might not, but Rhett continued. “ I mean… it’s a lot better than it used to be over there, but I’m not some kind of theater kid. It’s different when you’re in a sport. I can’t even explain why, but it just is.”

“ If that’s all you're here for, cool. Tell whoever you want, it’s Manta Carlos.” Rhett waved his hand. “ Just with the rest of the gang, it’s better to just drop it. Otherwise we’re making mountains out of molehills.”

Lizzy snickered as Rhett admitted he was gay. Well, not at him, more at Aubrey being a guy after all this time."Well, seriously. Who the hell names their son Aubrey? It's like they wanted him to be gay." she teased.

"Besides, if it was going to be any of us.. My money was on you." She said with a slight shrug. Between his moms, and the fact that he seemed to be the least involved in romance and dating out of the group, she'd always pegged him for being gay, or at least bi. Plus, the girlfriend from another school gimmick was easy to see through for what it was. "But love whoever you want. Free island and all that. I'm definitely telling the others though."

“ Oh. They didn't.” Rhett said under his breath. His nose crinkled into a grimace. What might have been her deranged attempt at sympathy just added fuel to the flame. The last thing he wanted to hear was that all the rumours and teasing that had been going on since middle school were justified.

“ Seriously, what makes you think that? Do I act gay to you?” He asked sharply. They had only been speaking for a few minutes yet Rhett sounded exhausted. He far from the type of person that came to mind with the stereotypical gay teen. Apparently, sometimes having two mothers was enough. After all his efforts to blend in, people still thought they saw right through him.

“ And why do you even want to tell the rest so badly? You’re talking about it like it’s mono. It’s my business, why does it matter.” Rhett set his hand down firmly on the bed, getting ready to stand up again. He glared at Lizzy then swung his hand, pointing to the door. The expression on his face was sour and flat out tired.

“ Alright, since you’ve made it clear that’s all you’re here for, leave. Get out.”

Lizzy's eyes went wide when Rhett told her to get out. "Look, all I said was.. I was just teasing you. I didn't mean it like that, okay!?" Lizzy huffed, crossing her arms and refusing to leave.

Sucking in her breath, she pulled out her phone and quickly pulled up a selfie of her and Shiro, with Shiro kissing her on the cheek. "And you really wanna know how I knew?" She asked, smirking. "Because it takes one to know one." Lizzy said as she handed her phone over to Rhett for him to look at the picture.

Rhett's eyes nearly rolled to the back of his head. He took a deep breath. It was a good thing that he was pretty much sedated by everything that had happened the other day, otherwise he would have snapped. Where it was just teasing meant jackshit, that’s the way it went on for so long. Besides Trevor the comments were never outright malicious, but the implications were still there.

“ Can’t look at screens, makes my migraines worse.” He winced at the bright light, quickly turning the phone away, but he still saw enough to get the idea. It might have not been the revelation she might have hoped it would be. His other hand gripped tightly on the bed. “ Oh, this is what they call ‘gaydar’ right? Cool. Good for you Lizzy.”

“ Well shit, now I have to cross off ‘homophobe’ from my reasons to hate you.” His tone of voice and the fact he was saying all this through gritted teeth made it unclear how serious he was and whether a physical copy existed. “ Why are you so smug about it?”
