Jessica was having a great time helping Katie learn to surf, pointing out the best small wave to try it out on and giving more advice

Then she felt something brush against her leg. Not that weird, really--she assumed it was just some seaweed or whatever. But then she felt a sharp pain run along her right calf. She looked down as blood started to pool around her legs.

"Katie! Out of the water!" she immediately shouted. "Something's in the water! Out out out!"

She grabbed the board and swam both of them to shore, despite her injured leg. Yeah, it hurt, but not really in the same way it would have hurt if she were still human.

When they reached the shore, Jessica was limping a bit before she sat down in the sand to look at the nasty gash that travelled from the back of her knee and down to her ankle.

"Ew," she said, before looking out at the ocean and squinting. "The fuck out there caused this?"

Katie

Katie gave Jessica a look of confusion when she started shouting, only for it to quickly change to a look of worry and fear when Katie saw the blood pooling in the water. "JESSICA!! What happened?!!" Katie shrieked.

Katie didn't get an answer, because Jessica was too busy getting them back to shore, and to safety. Though once they were on land, Katie got to see just how bad Jessicas injury was, and it was bad. The cut was bigger and deeper than anything Katie had dealt with before, and she wasn't even sure if she could heal it. Still, what kind of friend would she be if she didn't at least try?

"I.. I don't know.." Katie said, before taking several deep breaths. "But.. It's.. I can heal you! I can fix this, don't worry!" Katie said, failing to mask the worry in her voice. She put her hands right near the wound, and began to let her magic try to heal Jessica.

Jessica was distracted, looking out at the ocean in an attempt to figure out what had cut her--but she couldn't see anything. Then when she realized Katie was trying to use healing magic on her, she suddenly yelled out: "Wait, Katie, no no no--!"

But it was too late. Rather than healing Jessica's wound, Katie's healing magic began to melt her skin. It was like Jessica was made of wax, her skin melting to muscle, and then to bone in no time at all.

Jessica frowned at her exposed bones, from knee to foot. Then she glanced up with a sheepish smile at Katie, to make it clear she was not angry at her.

"Um, so, healing magic...it doesn't really work on me..."

Katie

Katie could only watch in horror as Jessica's skin and muscle seemed to melt off of her leg, leaving nothing but bone. Her powers were meant to heal, not hurt! How could this have happened? Maybe she'd done something wrong, or maybe she'd lost her healing powers. But then, why had the skin melted off? There had to be a reasonable explanation for this. There just had to be.

Slowly, Katie stopped trying to heal Jessica's injury, instead, just staring at her hands which were beginning to shake. She hadn't meant to hurt her. She had only been trying to help! But now she'd gone and made everything worse. And she didn't have the faintest idea of how to even begin to fix it.

"I'm sorry.. I'm so sorry..." Katie whimpered. She could hear Jessica talking, but it felt more like she was talking at Katie rather then to her. She just continued to stare at Jessica's exposed bones. This was all her fault.

"Hey hey hey, you're okay..." Jessica reached over and firmly placed her hand on Katie's shoulder, trying to shake her out of her horror.

"You didn't know, and that's on me! Because I don't like telling people that I'm--" she hesitated a moment and then sighed. "I'm basically undead. Kinda. I'm a reaper. That's how I ended up here."

Jessica shifted over and stood to her feet. "Look, see? It doesn't even hurt and it'll regenerate in a while. At worst, I'm just gonna be walking funny for a bit." She grinned, trying to lighten up the mood.

Katie

Katie shuddered as Jessica placed her hand on Katie's shoulder. Yet, it did manage to jar Katie back to reality. Slowly, she turned her head towards Jessica, who didn't look like she was in pain, or even really concerned about her leg.

"You.. you're okay.. You're actually okay!" Katie said, relief clear in her voice. "I thought i'd.." Katie looked to the ground and trailed off, before looking up at Jessica. "But it's alright!" Katie said with a small smile now that she could see that Jessica was okay.

Jessica did surprise her when she revealed that she was a undead reaper. "You mean.. Like, the grim reaper?" Katie asked. She never would have guessed Jessica was actually dead the entire time, especially since Jessica didn't look dead, but looks could certainly be deceiving.

Katie's smile grew as Jessica stood up. She had to admit, Jessica did look a little funny with half of her leg being only bone. "Maybe going surfing today wasn't a great idea." Katie said, jokingly.

Jessica was relieved as Katie calmed down. She didn't really like people worrying so much over her, nor did she want Katie feeling guilty.

"Yeah, I guess it's sort of like the grim reaper..." she murmured. "I kinda died, and then came back, and it's just a whole thing...."

She trailed off, clearly not wanting to say anything more than that. She limped over to where they had left their stuff on the beach and grabbed her purse, pulling out a foldup cane from inside. It had a leopard print pattern.

"Pfft, right?" She said with a grin. "Good thing I am always prepared and stylish."

She looked back over to the ocean again, squinting her eyes. "Whatever the hell got me, I feel like I should maybe report it to someone? I guess..."

Jessica leaned her weight against her cane with a sigh, before looking back to Katie. "Hey, would you mind helping me back home? I'm gonna be kinda slow-moving...but hey, we could chill at my place if you'd like. Maybe watch a movie or something?"

Katie

Katie's eyes went wide as Jessica pulled out her leopard print cane. "Oh! Wow, that is stylish!" Katie said with a grin, before following Jessica's gaze towards the ocean. "M..Maybe we should call the police? They would know what to do, right?" Katie offered.

She took a look around for whatever had hurt Jessica, though she couldn't see it. Most of the other people in the water had also cleared out by this point.

"Of course! It's,, it's the least I can do." Katie said, when Jessica ask for help getting home. Katie still felt guilty about what she'd done to Jessica's leg, despite the reassurances that it was fine. "I can carry the surfboard too!" Katie offered, quickly picking it up. Though carrying it was easier said than done, as she struggled to keep it steady, not used to carrying a surfboard.

Jessica couldn't help but giggle a bit when Katie picked up the surfboard and was clearly expecting it to be lighter.

"You can just put it in here, actually," she said before opening up her purse and holding it out to Katie. The purse was tiny, but the surfboard would go right in regardless.

"Yeah, I guess calling non-emergency would work. We can give them a call when we get to my place."

She then pulled her purse over her shoulder and stuck her cane into the sand.

"Okay, so, the sand is the tricky part so I'm just gonna grab your shoulder for a bit," she explained as she rested her free hand against Katie. "After that, it's no biggie."

Katie stared at the open purse. "But.. What about your leg? And I don't even think this will fit in your purse either.. I can carry it, it's fine. Really!" Katie said, not wanting to overburden Jessica when she really only had one functional leg.

Adjusting her grip on the board to try to carry it easier, Katie positioned herself next to Jessica to help her off the sand. "Alright, slow and steady, right? It's not that far!" Katie said as Jessica placed her hand on her. Once she was ready, Katie would slowly guide Jessica over to more solid ground.

"And there we go!" Katie announced once they were off the sand. "So, uhh.. Where do we go now?"
