Well, it could be worse

Carta threw the pillow back at his roomate. "Alright! I'm going!" He said as he opened the door and closed it behind him. It was his turn to go and get some stuff from the stores in town and he was just putting it off, being the lazy he was. Checking his pockets for the money, he had it. Enough to get the usual amount of junk food they kept in the room.

Carta thought about it, and he never really paid for it this much, his roommate had a job. Maybe he should get one? Nah, not yet. Why would he? He enjoyed doing nothing with his life right now, and nothing was a little bit boring though.

He walked out of the dorm building with his hands in his pockets and elbows bent behind him. He didn't feel like going out, though he was going to be hit by another pillow and not like he was doing anything better and boredom wasn't he bestest friend either. "Which store was cheaper again..." He questioned himself trying to remember where he got it for a few dollars less on the total.

The incident that had occurred in the forest was still burning in his mind. Although it had happened yesterday, his body was still trembling somewhat out of fear and grief, and there was a large bruise on his stomach where he'd been kicked. Luckily his white shirt covered that flesh, otherwise people might have asked questions.

As of now, Sabriel was looking for Carta, his only friend and the one person he thought would understand if he went to. He was headed towards the dorms, only to spot the familiar figure of his friend headed away. Not wanting to lose him, Sabriel picked up his pace a little and ran toward the other young male, throwing his arms around him from behind. Had Sabe not been as physically weak and frail as he was, it could have resulted in a tackle, but for now it was merely a somewhat forceful surprise hug from behind.

"Hi Carta!" he said, grateful that he had found him.

Carta walked a bit then stumbled forward slightly when the boy hugged him from behind. That was Sabriel all right. He smiled and pulled out of his hug. Still trying to remember that Sabe was older than him by a year, it was a bit hard to think that. "Hey!" He said using his hand to motion for Sabe to follow him at his side, he kept on walking in the direction he was heading.

"What's up, how are you?" He asked casually expecting the common 'Nothing' and 'Fine' from people, though for the fine might be replaced with a 'Super Spectacular' or something from Sabe. Not that Carta minded much, it was only what he expected from his friend.

Sabriel walked around to Carta's side, releasing him for the time being. He bit his lip then and wrapped both of his arms around Carta's, clinging to him almost desperately. Carta would allow him to do that, right? He was his only friend and he needed some form of comfort, but he wouldn't ever burden his poor friend with his troubles.

He smiled at the questions that he posed. "Not a lot!" he responded, but he stumbled over the next one. "And I'm okay." His smile faltered a little. He didn't want to lie, but Carta didn't have to know either. Sabriel didn't even know where Nicolas had disappeared to, so how could either of them confront him? Besides, it was okay.

"What about you? Where are you going? Can I come too?" he asked.

Carta flinched slightly when Sabe clung to his arm, as long as he kept up and didn't physically drag he would let him stay there. Wouldn't be the first time. Using his other hand to rub Sabe's head for a moment, they both enjoyed doing that. Sabe for whatever reason involving being part feline or whatever and Carta found it a bit interesting, even when his friend purred.

"I'm fine, just going into town. And, you already are, aren't you?" Carta said teasing his friend slightly that he had already latched on and was heading in the same direction. "Ah yeah, not that I mind, but do you need to cling to me? Well, I don't mean it's a problem... just asking." He said not trying to shoe his friend off of him, just that it would look a little awkward in public like this.

"For what?" Sabriel asked. He was being nosy, but that was okay. As best friend, he had the right to know where Carta was going specifically, didn't he? Well, no matter. A grin cracked his lips apart and he laughed nervously. "Yeah, I guess I am. Sorry." Maybe it had been bad to invite himself. He shouldn't have forced himself on Carta....

His ears laid down against his head when Carta asked that. He said he didn't mind, but Sabriel thought otherwise. It was just Carta being nice, overly nice, just like he always was. With a good degree of reluctance he let go of his friend, fighting the urge to pull him into another hug or something for physical contact. "Sorry," he said. "It's bothersome, isn't it? I don't have to. I thought it was okay."

Carta thought for a moment before answering, there was a few things he could buy. He always had left over money, though he didn't tell his roommate. "Going to buy some food for my dorm room, if you want I can get you some candy or something..." He said thoughtfully as he continued on.

He half expected Sabe to let go, he didn't mind though felt a little less there without his friend clinging there. "For both, it's ok. You can come, it will be less boring that way. Also, it's not that bothersome... if you want to you can." He said wondering if Sabe would or not, though it didn't matter. "Is something on your mind?" Carta asked this on a hunch, he seemed slightly off, if anything.

Sabriel's face nearly lit up at the proposition of candy. "Would you? Really?" he asked. "I mean, I can buy it, it's okay. But I'll come with you!" He enjoyed sugary treats, especially lollipops. He hoped there would be lollipops, wherever they were going!

He shifted his weight uncomfortably when Carta said it wasn't as bothersome as he thought. He still didn't want to push his luck - Carta was, after all, his only friend - but if he said it was okay then it must have been, right? Sabriel linked his arm though Carta's, though his hold wasn't as strong as it had been.

Then the question came. Sabriel looked down. Nicolas wouldn't want him telling, but he couldn't lie to Carta. Not Carta. "I just... it turns out my brother's not dead," he said, his voice more melancholic than it should have been for something so happy. "I- don't get me wrong, I'm happy! I thought he was dead! But... he's not being very nice..."

Carta smiled and shook his head. "No, I'll pay. You're my friend and I offered." He said nicely as he walked on, Sabe had taken a moment but went back to clinging to his arm, just not as tightly as in the beginning. He just moved forward hoping that Sabe won't drag him down at all.

He went on to speak about something else. He sounded quite... off about it all at first. His brother was alive? Well, that was good wasn't it? Sabe even said he was happy about it, but... he wasn't being nice? That could mean a lot of things, a lot of people were mean to him. So far Sabriel had only a few people in the entire school be nice to him. His only friend being Carta.

Still, it was his brother and wasn't being very nice. He stopped walking and looked at Sabe and held him there and thought for a second. "Not nice how? What did he do to you?" Carta asked seriously wondering if there was any physical contact involved.

"If you're sure," Sabriel said, not wanting to make an argument. It felt nice to have someone worry about him and want to buy him things... money didn't buy friendship or any important things, but in today's society it was a kind gesture and Sabe wouldn't dare refuse it. A small smile graced his thin lips, if only for the moment. Carta was far too good to him.

The smile was gone after everything he explained though, and when Carta stopped walking Sabriel became almost afraid. What was going through his friends mind? He tried to read it in his eyes, but he found nothing - no indication whatsoever. He waited for Carta to say something, keeping his arm linked through his.

Shifting his weight uncomfortably, Sabriel looked away and flattened his ears against his head. "I don't know if he'd want me telling," he mumbled. "He was just... saying mean things... and he punched me in the tummy... but it's not like he said anything wasn't true. I am a burden to everyone and I'm sure my aunt doesn't want me around... so it's okay... right?"
