Well, it could be worse

Carta looked at Sabe with a small frown on his face, which looked slightly irritated. Mostly that someone would go out to hit Sabe, even his own brother. He knew people picked on him and he would do something about it if he was there for most of the things, but physically hurting was something else and by one of his own siblings?

He pulled his arm free of Sabriel and put both hands on his shoulders. "You're no more a burden than the next kid out there. And definitely not to me, not at all." Carta said honestly, and trying to make his friend feel better after what his own brother told him. "I don't know your aunt but I'm sure she doesn't think of you like that." He said, not completely sure.

He looked at Sabe in the eyes and then stepped back, letting go of his shoulders. "Is there a mark? If there is, show me." He said, sounding nice still but demanding. If there was a mark he could maybe report it to the police? No, Sabe wouldn't let him do that to his brother.

Oh no. Oh no, he'd pulled his arm free. Fear passed over him; what was Carta thinking? Sabriel didn't know and he desperately needed to. Panic showed in his golden eyes, only somewhat relieved when Carta placed both hands on his shoulders. He didn't know what to believe... Nicolas wouldn't lie, but neither would Carta. Never Carta.

Sabriel nodded slowly, comprehending what he said. "If you're sure," he said again, curling his lower lip into his mouth and biting it softly. "You're very kind, Carta." He wasn't sure he said it enough, so what was the harm in saying it now? There was none, he was quite certain of it. He made no response to his assumption about his aunt, petrified once again when all physical contact was gone.

"Ah..." Sabe looked around, then decided it would be okay. "Y-Yeah, okay," he said. Carta wouldn't do anything... right? Sabriel hooked his fingers underneath the hem of his shirt and began to pull it up, wincing somewhat as it rolled over the large yellow, brown and purplish bruise, averting his eyes partly because he didn't want to see Carta's reaction. "It... it could have been worse..."

Carta crotched down as Sabriel lifted his shirt up. He looked at it and knew that must've hurt a lot. He could only have worried a little bit. This looked a lot more serious then me imagined. He half expected there to be nothing there or a small red mark, not a huge bruise. He stood up to his full height again, only a inch or so taller than Sabriel, he motioned that he could put his shirt down now.

"Could have been worse? That's one of the worst bruises I have seen." He said as he thought about and looked down the road. They have left the school bondaries a few minutes ago and were on the street. He gave Sabriel a quick hug to try to help for the next thing he would say, plus Sabe liked hugs and could probably use one.

"Maybe I should get you to the hospital or something to have that checked out, might have some internal bleeding or something." He said sounding worried and waited, obviously waiting for Sabe to decide, not that he wouldn't try and convince him though. "How long ago did he hit you?"

At Carta's gesture Sabriel let his shirt drop back down, pulling at it somewhat so that it fully covered him and a few inches of his tail. He lifted a hand to run it through his hair, rubbing at the bottom of his ear to try to relax himself. "Is it that bad?" he asked quietly. He'd known it was bad, that it was discolored and that maybe he should have put ice on it... but he hadn't thought it was that bad.

He smiled when Carta pulled him into a hug, though was saddened by how quick it was. Feeling daring, the neko boy pulled him back, wrapping his arms around him and burying his head into the other's shoulder. "I'll be okay," he said. "We don't have to go to the hospital. I don't want to. They'll ask how I got it and I'm a really bad liar, and I can't tell them my brother did it because... I don't even know where he is right now and I don't want to go through anymore than I already have." Carta didn't know his past... maybe one day, but for not yet.

"Not very long ago," he said, still clinging to his friend as if for dear life. "Maybe... yesterday? I think it was yesterday. Maybe it was the day before. But it was very recent. I was in the woods because I had a breakdown and wanted to be alone... and... and he just showed up out of no where and I was so happy because I thought he was rotting in the ground somewhere and I tried to embrace him but he... he did this... and said things..." He sniffled at this point, his golden eyes welling up slightly with tears.

Carta jumped slightly when Sabriel pulled him back into a hug. He just put his arms around his friend's back to return it. He could as long as he needed to, just that in public it would seem a bit awkward, now just wasn't the time to tell Sabe to let go though. He needed comfort for what happened.

"Well, I could lie for you... but if you don't want to go to the hospital that's fine. I won't force you."" He said calmly and looked down the street. He should really get going but might as well wait until Sabe was willing to go on again. He went to try and pull out of the hug, only gently.

"If I ever see your brother I will talk to him about it if you want, and I won't let him hurt you again." Carta spoke reassuringly and only hoped he could. He didn't know what type of person his brother was mentally or physically.

OOC: Oh my, x.x shooort.

Sabriel relaxed as he felt Carta's arms wrap around him. It didn't matter to him if they were in public or not. There were a lot of things he just didn't understand and wasn't aware of. "Don't lie for me..." he said quietly. "I'll be okay. I've had worse." Well, not physically, but he'd been in a lot more pain mentally and emotionally. If his own soul had hurt more than this bruise and he had endured it then Sabriel thought he'd be okay.

"No!" Sabriel exclaimed, unwinding his arms from Carta immediately so that his hands rested on his shoulders. For now, the embrace was over. "No, no, don't, it... I don't want it to get worse," he said. "I don't want him to try to hurt you too. Not you." Carta was his only true friend here, he wouldn't subject him to any sort of peril.

"Maybe... maybe we should just go run that errand you had to run," he suggested softly.

Carta let Sabriel speak and not interrupt him until he was done. He had worse? Who would've hurt him more than that? It probably has happened but he was only curious if it had happened recently. He wouldn't bother to ask that right now. Then the hug ended and Sabriel exclaimed a 'No!'

Carta only looked at his friend confused and continued to listen to what he had to say. He wanted to interject and say something to that but he didn't know what. Not yet. Sabe seems quite protective over his only friend, he smiled slightly at the caring that he could sense from it. When Sabe said that they should continue on the errand, he nodded and looked down the road. He pulled Sabriel along gently by his hand.

"As for your brother hurting me, I wish the same upon you. I don't want him to hurt you either. But if you don't want me to talk to him, I won't. I just want to help you though." He said in a near whisper so that Sabriel could hear him, he thought about something that would cheer him up. Maybe just be direct. "Anyways, don't focus on it for now. And, what kind of candy do you want when we get to a store?"

The contact of their hands together made Sabriel smile, and he gave Carta's hand a gentle squeeze to show he appreciated the action. "Thank you," he said. Carta had been so caring, compassionate, and understanding; he was the person Sabriel had thought he wouldn't be blessed with. "I don't even know if you'd find him... but... thank you, Carta. For everything you've done. It... it means a lot."

And it did. Sabriel wasn't sure how to express it in words, but he hoped maybe he'd be able to show him one day.

The mention of candy made him grin enthusiastically for the first time since this conversation had initiated. "Can we get lollipops? And snickers? I love snickers..." he said.

Carta nodded at his question. "As long as it's under five dollars." He said and walked forward, still gently pulling Sabriel along. The rest had to be spent on the stuff he was really suppose to buy. He only had sixy, well, it was good enough for a weeks worth of cheap snacks that they liked to keep in the room.

When he got down to the market he looked at the small request list they had. It wasn't that much, just a list of favorites they liked to get each time or something different if they wanted it. He looked at the local store that was there. "Wanna help me find some things quickly?" He asked Sabriel, not expecting a no of any kind but he didn't know what to expect with Sabe anymore. It was weird.
