Taking hold of the ancient book in her hands, Raella gently flipped through its yellowed pages, skimming through the different things she could summon. Outside the window, the sun barely touched the edge of the horizon, giving rise to a resplendent sunset. Sublime rays filtered into the dorm, coloring the room a tint of orange, a perfect time to enhance her summoning skills and have some fun while she was at it. Pausing at a random page, she used her sharpened claws to make a small incision at the back of her hand to draw blood. Then, she quickly manipulated it to form the circle inscribed in the book, copying it down to its minute details. As her hands hovered directly above the newly drawn magic circle, she whispered a few lines of chants under her breath.

Almost instantly, blood glowed an intense shade of crimson before dissipating along with the circle. In its place lay small, crumpled up piece of paper. Raella felt a slight disappointment loom over her like an impending tsunami, however, she refused to allow negativity to consume her just yet as it was only her first summoning that day. With a small sigh, she then proceeded to examine the piece of paper, quickly noticing a telephone number written on the other side of it. Glancing out of the window, Raella was just in time to catch the last few tendrils of light vanish completely, consumed by the darkness of the night. Well, since it wasn't an ungodly time to contact someone, she decided to make the phone call. For all she knew she could even be calling her future soulmate or something, the possibilities were endless. Without further ado, she whipped up her mobile phone, dialed the number and waited in anticipation for someone to pick up.

"Hello, this is Raella speaking! I recently summoned a piece of paper which contained this number, may I know who it belongs to?"

Once those sentences escaped her mouth, she realized how creepy that would sound. Moreover, assuming it wasn't someone she knew, it made the worst possible first impression. Alas, it was too late to take her words back, all she could do now was wait and see how the other person would react.

aye Raella has finally obtained her dear Songbird's number!!!!!

Unfortunately for Raella and (quite possibly) fortunately for the good doctor, her message went straight to voicemail. The phone buzzed on silent for a bit, loud and long and very much ignored.

An took a moment to stare at the flashing UNKNOWN on her screen before protocol insinuated she let it hang until the caller either gave up or they were directed to leave a message after the tone. Most times the call was ended; An rarely, if ever, allowed her phone to voicemail — though as a new islander, she had taken to leaving voicemail open in case she needed to be contacted during emergencies or... something of the sort.

In any case, An dismissed it. They were probably a telemarketer. While she had some sympathy for the people on the other end of such lines, it was usually of no concern to her what they were selling and most times they were rather a rude bunch. She snorted softly and carried on lesson planning.

"You've reached the line of Dr. Li Jia An," said a voice that was distinctly not An's — the digital lady-behind-the-mail's, actually — "Please leave a message after the tone."

It was simple and short and entirely unoriginal. Stars, An hoped it wouldn't be anything major.

Upon realizing that her call was not, in fact, picked up, Raella let out yet another disappointed sigh. What kind of person doesn't pick up their phone? Oh well, since it had a voice mail at least Raella knew it was a valid number. Wait a moment...

You've reached the line of Dr. Li Jia An

Dr. Li Jia An

Oh my gosh, Raella has obtained the Li Jia An's number. Resisting the urge to scream in celebration, she decided that she would continue to redial that number as many times as it took for Songbird to pick up. This was turning out to be a very interesting night; what she thought was a failure of a summoning could possibly be the most successful summon to date. After quickly saving the number under the name "Bird Mom", Raella called her once more without any hesitation.

"SONGBIRD!!!"

That was funny. The number called again.

An's lips twisted into the ghost of a frown. Most telemarketers were not, in fact, so persistent. And yet there was no user tag telling her what kind of number it was -- the phone just flashed UNKNOWN over and over and buzzed obnoxiously on the table. It was Wednesday night; that awkward hiatus between the hell weekdays and glorious Friday. Midweek no-man's land, if she was feeling particularly poetic. She was no English teacher, but An was a woman inclined to spontaneous bursts of shower symphonies; she found herself describing her time on Manta Carlos often, in the hidden scratchings of her journal.

The line went dead. The phone rang again.

Maybe it really was an emergency. "Dr--"

"SONGBIRD!!!"

Stars, Jia An mentally cursed, and promptly ended the call. None of her students were supposed to have her number! She was going to have to change it, and soon.

And the line was dead once again.

"Damnit." Raella cursed to no one in particular.

It was no doubt that Songbird knew she was calling, perhaps the reason why she hung up was to avoid talking to her. Well, that wasn't happening, not on Raella's watch. The thought of paying a quick visit to the Jia An's home crossed her mind however, she knew not of Songbird's location and there was no guarantee that she would even be able to find her in such a large island to begin with. Hence she stubbornly dialed the number again, hoping that the teacher would not ignore her call. Even if she did Raella was feeling particularly annoying that day and would keep pestering Jia An until she manages to get a single sentence through to her.

"Songbird!! Wow, I didn't know this would be your personal number! Hello!!"

At this point, Raella was almost screaming into the phone in excitement and amusement. As much as she'd deny it, she wanted to know Songbird on a more personal level instead of trying to unnerve the teacher at every presented opportunity. After all, Songbird seemed like she possessed great wisdom and hence is capable of giving appropriate advice.

Her voice was quiet; low, soft, edging on threatening. It hung on a precipice too thin to traverse, save An's careful, blunt tone.

"How did you get this number, Ms. Laurie?"

Far be it from An to stray from protocol; as long as she was a teacher in the Academy and Raella a student, it would not do for her to address the student as anything more informal than that. She herself did not find 'Songbird' amusing; in another time, perhaps, somewhere in the distant multiverse there was a Raella who knew her as Songbird and a Jia An who preferred it. Certainly the name was pleasant; it had a ring to it An admittedly liked.

But this was not the place for a woman named Songbird. She'd grown up all her life as Jia An; she'd not trade that name for whatever time Raella knew.

Wasn't she too young for such things?

Jia An's tone slightly terrified her. Getting her personal number, though by mistake, was possibly the most effective thing which angered the teacher. Regardless, if Raella didn't explain herself properly at that moment, Songbird might just turn the cold shoulder on her. Hesitating slightly, she took a moment to sort out her thoughts, her voice coming out slightly more shaky than she intended to sound.

"Well I was practicing summoning using this book which I borrowed from the library and I summoned a crumpled piece of paper which happened to have a phone number written on it. I'm so sorry, I didn't know the number belonged to you before I called."

Taking a deep breath, Raella then proceeded to sit on the floor, crossing her legs and folding her wings behind her back. This was unexpected but a welcomed surprise nonetheless. She just hoped that Jia An wouldn't be fuming mad at her for this.

oh gosh sorry for the short reply softball has killed my brain cells

An took a slow breath. Inhale. Exhale. It annoyed her to no end that even such an inane reason as this had presented the student with her number. Her personal number. Nonetheless, she gave a longsuffering sigh; she’d change the number after this one call and then update all her forms. Again.

”It’s alright. Don’t expect to get a response from this number next time, though. What do you need, Ms Laurie?”

Dang, did Jia An really hate her students knowing her number that much? Raella may not have had much experience in Starlight Academy yet but back in her previous secondary school, teachers were giving their numbers out to students as if it was nothing. Well, if it was that unfavorable, Raella supposed there was nothing she could do about it.

What do you need, Ms Laurie?

Honestly, she didn't expect to get this far. That night was supposed to solely be reserved for summoning practice but now it has diverged into something else entirely. After staying silent for a moment too long, Raella then replied with an excuse. Not the best excuse possible but an excuse nonetheless.

"It's a beautiful Wednesday night and what can I say, I got lonely."

Raella couldn't see her, but An nodded anyway. It was normal to feel lonely. An didn't know how new Raella was to the Academy, but she wagered the girl might someday think of people far away and miss it.

Unfortunately for Raella, pastoral care was not one of her duties. An was not a dorm parent and as a teacher, her job extended to the students in her class and those who needed help. Being nice, while lovely, was not a "must" and at this hour? When she should be finishing up her lesson plans and getting her first set of papers graded?

She was not a woman for dallying.

"Is that all, Ms Laurie? If so --" and at this An cast a glance to the stack of papers sitting illuminated by the blue light of her computer. "Goodnight."

And she ended the call for the last time.
